We had the same cold weather here. @ -25 'c car did not start at first attemp, but second time did the trick. I think I should finally change the new glow plugs.

Been home on parental leave the last three weeks! Time to go back work again tomorrow. Only did 800km during my time off, still on the same tank of diesel as when i last worked.

We got some snow last week and had our first day of real winter weather, hit -23c. Its warmer again now though and there forecasting 25cm of snow next week when lucky me that has a 700km round trip planned to drive.

-25 came and went, now -2, tomorrow may rise over zero. That will mean salt and sh**ty slush on the highways again.  :Pout: Why oh why it can't be steady -5 through the winter...

Ah well, my i30 has already been clean whole 10 days  after getting it machine washed when the cold weather arrived. Be it summer or winter, Mr. Murphy will always bring bad weather immediately after washing your car.

Mr Murphy? i thought it was the Spanish girl when it's cold & wet & the spanish boy when it's hot & dry. but the Irishman??

Well before today I thought salt on the streets in winter time is only a Russian know-how) I haven't seen salt in Finland so far, frankly speaking - just granite particals littering snow and asphalt (Lappenranta area)

Congratulations meeha!

-I got out afterwork, diligently scraped all my windows with the engine off so as not to break the law against idling. Drove off and straigt into a shower of undercooled rain, got 100m before I had run the window down to look out, whindsheild was covered, then another 500m before I could safley pull over, idle till the windows heated up, go out and rescrape the entire car from the 2mm of ice that had formed all over it.

Had it been enough light Id have taken a picture. And if Id thought of it...

+ On my way to Brunei for some simulator training.
- It's for two weeks.
-- Brunei is a dry country.
+ I can do with a dry spell (so can the FatLiver).
+ I'm adding to my qualifications (first week is me learning how to instruct in the sim).
-- After I do the instructing, I get tested (again).
+ Two weeks home after that!!
- Back to Brunei for another week in February.
++ More qualifications (and a pay rise) if I do well in both.
- Weather in Melbourne while I wait for the international flight is bad.
+ Weather has improved in Melbourne.
- It's bad weather again in Melbourne.
++ At least I'm not a weather guesser (forecaster) in Melbourne.

Think of it as a one week job interview every six months for a job you already have but aren't guaranteed of keeping.

Plus rule changes, CASA loves rule changes; and new procedures to use with new checklists, as the other ones were found to be just fine, but needed tweaking to make them betterer (with gooderer Englandish so that the rest of the world can understand).

++I just set a new personal best! I just refueled my car, I did a 4.27l/100km tank! 1184km on 50.54l, average speed of 67kph. Not bad for studded winter tires from Kumho(Does make the Hankook summer tires look really, really bad for fuel economy though). (still don't like the traction of the Kumhos, or the amount of studs that have fallen out)

Bad news for me.
On Wednesday got a phone call from wifey saying battery light on, loud squeal and bad smell in her Grand Cherokee.
She was just around the corner from me so i got her to bring it to me. Opened the bonnet and bad smell and noise very obvious. Sent her away in my Wrangler.

Anyway long story short, spent 2 long nights testing and swapping the alternator from my Wrangler with no luck. Replaced the alternator this morning with new and no luck. Had to replace it anyway as old one has a dead short internally.

Looking very much like the engine modulùe has been taken out as consequences

Triple S (salt, slush, s**t) conditions has been at here too, but now it's getting colder for a while. In last few days I have had severely imbalanced wheels because of all that snow and slush inside wheel wells partially melting after driving, water dropping into the lower side of the wheel, and then freezing again. It's not nice to drive with that vibrating and not healthy to the car either. There has been also other common winter-related nuisances such as the parking brake freezing (car will not move until trying harder and then the parking brake disengaging with a bang), and then some crunching sounds from the suspension which is also covered in snow and ice.

Just don't dare to not clean this mess immediately after driving, unless you want to have problems with tyre clearance against the mudguard and wheel imbalance at the next day...  :whistler:

Just hope it sticks around for the Rally Sweden this weekend.

We have forecast lows at -11c and highs at -3c for the coming week. The rally should be safe, especially since they drive up in the hills mostly, where there is a lot more snow(I cross them on the way to work every day). Looks like its gonna be a great event this year!

This is what Torsby looks like at the moment, light snowfall. Everyone in town is all psyched up about it, especially since they moved service here!
Dirt, salt, grime, frozen doors and handbrakes(don't, use the gearbox), trouble getting in gear especially reverse - all normal state of beeing 4-6 months of the year. -___-
The heated steering wheel is really nice, no more driving with gloves, especially since the diesel takes 15km to get a decent temp in the cabin when its very cold(no pre heat after work).

It's indeed different, in both ways. For example I had never heard of dash mats until some of you mentioned about such thing at here. Although at summer the car interior gets hot while parking under the shining sun, at here it's not bad enough to damage the plastic dashboard.

I think it could be harsh for me to drive in those temperatures you are having down under. Even in our warm summer days when it goes over 25°C, the sunshine through the side window feels hot despite the A/C. At 40° my face and arms would be burned red and crispy in no time! :p

It's an interesting topic. We don't generally get extreme temperatures in Tasmania, but the humidity can make it feel hotter and the "hole in the ozone layer" can make the sun feel particularly brutal at times.

I have dark tinted windows in my cars which I miss when a get a rental car in hotter mainland states. Don't seem to get too burnt through the glass which filters the UV, but certainly feel the extra heat on my skin.

The dashmats also reduce the reflection of the dashboard in the screen caused by our relentless sunny days.

+ Managed to get driver door open.
- Drove to fast food drive through and noticed my window was also frozen shut.
- Had to go indoors to place my order.
- Had to deal with a real human face to face instead of talking to the speaker box.
+ Got some burgers.
- The burgers weren't so good afterall...

+ Drove into a garage under the mall to warm my car. Got the doors open.
- Noticed that the drver side rear door lock does not work anymore with remote control or with the pushbutton on drivers door.
- Too cold to do any work on the car. I'll have to wait for the spring to get the lock fixed. Allthough I hope it is just deepfrozen...

Been hot here for past few weeks, but just open windows and i mostly get sea breeze ( in house ) but this time that hot needed to use air conditioning. then yesterday we got first good rain in a month and temps in 20's felt cool, can;t imagine - temps.
I was wondering if coating some type of oil in wheel arch would help stop snow sticking when it flys off tyes? Like a friend sprays WD40 over front of his car to stop bugs and locusts sticking to car in summer here and that works. ( bugs wash off much easier )

I'll rather have the cold. When it is cold you can wear more clothes. When it gets colder you wear more clothes. With heat it gets bit more diffucult. When it gets hot you loose some clothes. When it gets hotter there isn't anything you can do after you are naked.

 Yeah, busy with unpacking and finding new places for our things.

+ The mountain bikes have new clean Aussie air in their tyres and tomorrow I ride to work.
+ Our NBN is now across 3 phones, 2 tablets and a laptop on WiFi and 2 more PCs upstaris in the study on cable (typing on my Linux desktop right now!)
- I also prefer cold. Down to shorts only and stopping there to stay respectable.
+ The 3 weeks we did in snow country in Spain I was in shorts and t-shirt while the locals had coats and scarves! :crazy1:
- This unpacked keyboard feels very dusty.
+ I re-soldered my home-made ion generator and it's nicely removing dust from the air.
- The 6(+2) burner Weber barbecue needed its Natural Gas orifices replaced for LP Gas.
+ After fruitless searching, I just soldered up the holes and hand-drilled them back out with a 1mm bit. :victory:

The 1mm hole is drilled at the valve not the burner itself. Gas & air mix in the tube and then burn where it's supposed to, at the burner.

At Thursday night it was snowing heavily when I came home from work, and despite cleaning most of the snow from wheel wells, at the next day I had wheels shaking like mad at 80 km/h, again.  :Pout:

Today I purchased a proper car jack to get the wheels lifted off ground, and it will be in use also when changing summer tyres next time. It's so much easier than with those crappy scissor and bottle jacks... gosh, why didn't I buy one years ago?

Anyway, I started the battle with the jack and a pressure spray bottle filled with hot water. I was thinking whether I need to remove the wheels, but after turning the steering to the extreme and lifting the corner up, I managed to clean the inside of front wheels by spraying hot water and turning the wheel slowly. Then I went to a short test drive immediately before that sprayed water will freeze, and no more shaking!  Usually this is not a problem in rear wheels, because there's no hot engine radiating residual heat after driving like in front.

Ready to attack against the ice! By the way, would an SUV version of i30 look like this?  :snigger:

There's the guilty! No need to wonder why it was shaking. The wheel insides will collect dust and dirt at summer too, but then it will spread and stick evenly without imbalance problems.

Nah, flat out engaging with the public at the cadet exhibit which includes aircraft like the Piper Warrior and Schleicher self launching glider, as well as a tent full of flight sims.

Here's a real buzz: Chief of Air Force while talking to cadets today turns to me shakes my hand and says 'G'day Gonz'. I'm speechless.

'Do you remember our dinner in Jakarta last November?', I ask.

'No, I've known you a lot longer than that' he says.

My mind races: EW conference? Yes, I had personally invited him to speak at one of my conferences back in 2013. What an impressive memory he has!

Now how do I turn this into a career move? :workitout:

-PCM I ordered for our Grand Cherokee from USA came on Monday after 3 week wait. SOB has a faulty alternator field controller exactly the same as the busted original.
+Seller has been good and agreed to refund once returned.
-I have to pay return shipping.
+Will refit original PCM and install an external voltage regulator.
-Can't afford to buy the conversion kit for another week or two then wait for it to ship. Looking like another month off the road and rego due in 6 weeks, blowed if I know where I'll find money for that.

Car ticked over 50k km, running a lot smoother on the new oil.

Going to warsaw first week in april, interviewing 3 radiologists. :)

For obvious reasons I was going to wash my car today, sunny spring weather and all. Just had to go into town and do some shopping first.

Half way there, the water in fuel filter light lit up. Figured it go away after draining the water out of the filter, but no game. Filter is a 60k km item here, and the cars only done 50k, and had a new filter right before I bought it at 5000km.
Guess I'm stuck at 3k revs and no power until I can get it to a dealer to check it up...

In case anyone wants to map where the dirt ends up on the car, muddy farm roads are fun.

I'm sure you know how damaging water is to a Diesel engine. Best not to drive the vehicle until the fuel has been drained form the tank and replaced with new fuel. Your service station may be the culprit, try a new station. Also there will be mixed fuel at the injectors etc so that should be replaced too. You should put some fuel conditioner that cancels out water, should be available at reputable auto accessory shops.

Are there bigger mudflaps available? Don't think they would help that much on these here roads though, but maybe they would keep the mud off the windshield.

Must have been some bad fuel, first(and last) time I fill at that pump/station. Light stayed lit a while this morning until I hit an incline when the light went out, it then proceeded to fade in and out for a couple of km as I was acceding/descending hills until it stayed out. Going to pick up some diesel conditioner on the way home for god measure, but it seems to have rectified itself without any harm done. Filter has done what its supposed to do I assume.

Just a side note, the fuel filter is a pain to get to for being a serviceable item. Had to remove air box, battery and ECU(Or what I assume is the ECU, two big cables going in and no hoses). In retrospect I could probably have just opened the air box and still got the battery out, but I had so many dead flies and mosquitoes in it, I decided to pull it so I could tip em on the bonfire.

So lets keep our fingers crossed it stays out until its due to be replaced in 12000km.

I think you should replace the fuel filter ASAP. At here it's included in every service (1 yr / 30k km), no matter how much less than that it's been since the last service. Generally any diesel fuel sold in Nordics is good quality, and the diesel bug is rare in our cold climate, but there's always a possibility of some water finding way to the tank (and water is what the diesel bug needs in order to grow).

The oversized mudflaps are available (however not much bigger than normal version). Check out this PDF document, page 25:

Sturdy, extra-large mudguards provide enhanced protection from damage caused by stone chips, road debris or salt.

Thanks @tohis

With mudflaps, I'm sure every extra cm counts! I will get a quote on them anyway. If the price is decent I'll have em fitted.

It is very odd that the filter is changed at 2y or 60k km here, when 1y 30k km seems standard elsewere, if anything it should be the same here as in finland! I will take a trip by the dealer and see what they say.

Im guessing either its accumulated water over the filters lifetime or a bad batch of fuel. Neither is farfetched.

Had to order new wiperblades today, the originals lasted 52000 km and three years. Pretty decent. They still wipe okay, except a portion the large one. Right in front of my face where it got a 5cm tear during the last batch of under cooled rain that froze on impact with a then very cold windshield. The tear was not to bad to start with, but only gets longer the more I use the wipers, and now I've had enough of it, Swedish wipers for the Hyundai this time around.

Rolled the barbecue out of the garage today and grilled some pork. Must soon be time to switch over to summer tires!

Got to change to summer tires today, as usual I did my brake service now too, still looking good on the pads and rotors, worn down at most 1mm since last fall. As last time, the expected reduction in road noise was a lot less than I hoped for, again. Might look into some sound deadening this summer.

When inspecting my winter tires, first thing all studs are flat as my chest, the tires are heavily worn, 3mm left on rears and 5mm on fronts. And I found this in one of the rears:
(click to show/hide)

At least now I know for sure where the annoying rotational sound have had all winter has come from, they have held 3kg tight and the whatever it is is worn as flat as the studs, so I guess its been an extra stud this year.

3mm is the limit for replacing them though, so no harm I guess, I drove them for 25000km, and the car only had 6400km when I bought it, so I can't imagine they did a lot before I got them (could be second hand already then though).

Oh @Shambles I washed it, just for you too!

A nice aspect of my military career is that it can never be defined narrowly. It always brings something new and interesting.

Before attending Staff College in Indonesia, I spent a year learning the language, but I doubled down and sat the Spanish alongside my scheduled Indonesian exams.

The upshot is that I joined the accredited linguist community with both languages and now it looks as if my services are required to supervise and assess a couple of Navy members due to post to the Australian embassy in Madrid. Before they can begin their duties in January, they have to pass in-country assessments in November, so it looks like I'm their man.

Cool job, I think. :D

Today I changed to the summer tyres. Ironically the weather went from sunshine to sleeting (partially melted snow falling) whilst doing the job, and just after finishing and then checking the pressures at the nearest gas station the sun reappeared. Sheesh... The weather has been unusually cold for the latter April, still having a bit of snow or sleet occasionally and freezing nights. Looks like Mr. Trump really managed to cancel the global warming problem!  :P I must be careful tomorrow morning when going into work.

These Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 winter tyres are in amazingly good condition after driving 4 winters with them. However those OEM Hankooks have only 3mm of tread left, so I need new ones pretty soon. The risk of hydroplaning increases a lot when the tread wears out to under 4mm.

I've only done a bit over 66K in 30 months, but still a fair bit of tread left. Thinking about a possible road trip in October so will probably replace them in September in the mid 70's.

Got enough bonfire material for a good day long fire!

- I have three hours to clean the house before there arrival, and its big enoughto hoise 10+ overnight guests.

Anyone else celebrate walpurgis?

Don't burn yourself.....we dance around our barbecue fire here in my household........ :happydance:

Today I was in Joensuu watching the May Day's old cars parade. After a s**tty April the weather got better at least temporarily, having a sunny day and whopping +9 degrees!  Believe me, it feels warm after a prolonged season of freezing temps. Many car enthusiasts and motorcyclists dig their treasures out for May Day, which is seen as a start of summer.

This video is not mine, but looks like I was there pretty close to who made it.

I had my car in on its first MOT this wensday. Bloke was a ceed driver himself and very, very interested in my i30. Passed without remarks as expected.

He was kind enough to point out some small things, rust protection around lifting points need touching up and my tires are getting a little uneven inside wear, upon looking at my winter tires its the same there. One headlight had a poorly fitted bulb(oups).

So gotta get some rust protection paint and a four wheel alignment soon, nearly 60k km, so I guess its about time.

10 days and counting. After the countdown, I don't have an i30 any more.  :scared:  :faint:

I made a deal of almost new Toyota Auris Hybrid Touring Sports and will trade in the i30. It's a 2017 model, driven only 5000 km by a dealer's office manager so it wasn't a demo car. They assured me it hasn't had any technical problems (and I recorded that phone call just in case  ). I would say it was a bargain, because a brand new one with all necessary accessories and other expenses would have been +4000 EUR more.

Last Friday I drove over 400 km to Tervajoki, almost at the other side of Finland to look and test drive it, got an offer but didn't want to accept it before thinking over the weekend, and then drove back home. >800 km in a crappy and awfully windy weather got me pretty exhausted, but I still didn't sleep like a log because my mind was restless, thinking what on earth I'm doing, getting rid of my dear precious i30 for an Auris???  But on the other hand, it's a hybrid with e-CVT, it's also a Wagon, and Toyo's hybrids are known to be very reliable cars. So today I called them and accepted the offer.

They offered to deliver it to my home and collect the i30 at 16th June, with no extra cost, so I don't need to drive there again. More pics later at the Member's other motors section...

Don't feel bad tohis! If I didn't have mobility issues and they did a wagon Hybrid over here I would have bought one. The Toyota Hybrid system is virtually a sealed unit requiring no maintenance. Having had two very reliable and efficient Toyota Hybrids I can highly recommend them. Well done.  :victory:

Nothing lasts forever, not even ownership of an i30. 3 years, 7 months, 22 days. 81836 kilometers. Every single time it started by one twist of key and took me into my destination. Hundreds of times between home and job. To Nordkapp (Norway), and to Göteborg (Sweden), both over 1000 km from home.

24.9.2013. The journey started from here. I have a tradition of taking a picture of new and old one together...

16.6.2017. The journey ended at here. Auris was delivered to my home, and after signing all the papers the delivery guy got the i30 and drove it away.

There it goes. Most likely my very last sight of it ever. Byebye, I'll miss you!  :blubber:
Anyway, the life must go on. More about the Auris in Members other motors section soon...

I attended the Veteran's Day service at the Shrine of Remembrance today, the focus being on reservists and conscripts. I had signed up to supervise approximately 20 cadets and staff there to support the parade as a flag bearing contingent.

No sooner had I arrived than the organising committee saw the uniform, medals and rank and kidnapped me for the role of Senior Air Force Officer representing the Chief of Air Force. Amid announcements of messages from the GG and PM, I sat beside the senior Army and Navy representatives to take in the parade, receive salutes and lay wreaths.

Meanwhile, my cadets did a terrific job marching the national flags all the way up the road and the steps of the Shrine.

The flypast by 2 CT4s and 2 Winjeels in diamond formation was a touch of class.

You never know what you may end up doing once you don the uniform. :D

So just had my 4 year/120k km service done (At 62k km thanks to the previous owner who only drove 6k km over her two years of ownership). Still got 1½ year of warranty left and will probably hit 120k km at the last service within warranty.

Provided my own, 0w-30(AV-L) shell helix ultra professional oil which i get for 1/3 of the price they charge for 5w-30 standard helix ultra. No complaints from their side, despite me only providing 5l instead of the asked for 5.3l. I did leave a note on the can saying that last time they had overfilled the car(which they had by 3dl) and that I would rather top up back home so as not to have to pump oil out again, so that might have helped.

Got them to do a wheel alignment too, which it turns out was badly needed (as I expected from my inner wear on both summer and winter tires). I wonder if they would have recommended me one if I had not said anything about it, I think not, imo they ought to check the alignment at service, especially when its 30k km intervals. Toe adjusted .25 degrees on both front and one rear. Car feels a lot firmer on the road already and the steering is back where it was when I bought it, firm and nice, definitely worth the money! :)

Also got a metal cargo guard/net and roof rack while I was at it. Managed to get a 10% discount on everything too, so the guards/rack came out cheaper than buying online(and I know they fit!).

While I was in the dealership waiting for them to finish up(got back a bit early) I ran into the sales person who sold me the car and had a chat with him too. Told him I'm happy with everything except the Hankooks that are fitted standard and it looked like he had heard that one a thousand times before and just excused that they have to sell them with those on.

Also got to look at the Iconic, just a sit in and check out the boot - Might actually be a good contender for my next car a few years down the line! Boot was a lot larger than the pictures look.

Very interesting post xiziz, thanks for that. My new SR came with Hankook Ventus Prime 2 which I believe are reasonably well considered around the traps. Tyre noise would be the worst (and maybe only) complaint about the new car. I won't know how much of this is related to the tyre brand until I replace them down the track. I imagine Hyundai has some connections with Korean Tyre brands Kumho/Handkook, maybe even financial?

Interestingly, they do seem quieter since I dropped the tyre pressures back from low 40's to mid 30's.
Title: Re: Either good or bad (or both) news you'd like to share with us - part #2
Post by: xiziz on July 05, 2017, 21:19:03
Yeah, mines on the ventus prime 2's aswell, I will know next spring when I am expecting to have them replaced, but the EU markings put them at 73db(think 69db on the newest vp2 makes), E on economy on 205/55/r16.

They sell almost exclusivly Kumho as winter tires here, hankooks as summers, they get a good deal on them so customers are not that willing to get other brands mounted at hyundai dealer.

Hankook makes a very good studded tire though(ipike rs 419), that I had on my volvo that had a very competative priceing(and there going on my rims before this winter as I still have then on volvo rims in the basement and the kumos are shot)

he drives fast but 70 y o. he said same the wear tyres fast.

I think I did about 58K in my FD i30 and think I changed the tyres at a bit over 50K?

Trish only did about 27K in her 4 y/o CW and the tyres were still fine and done about 20K in the tourer and less than half worn.

Congratulations!

- I dropped my phone in my full breakfast cup of coffee, got covered 2/3 of the way up. Moto G2, so nothing fancy or water/coffee proof
-- One of the speakers got sticky and the whole phone was sounding wonky, but was stll working so I figured it was fine to leave it on all day untill I had time to look at it.
+ A T4 screwdriver, some rubbing alcohol and the phone is working correctly after beeing completly dissasembled(while still turned on) and reassembled this evening.

- Now I wish all my things were as well built as my car and phone.

Glad the Moto G was salvageable! I have the first gen Moto G that I gave to my mum to use for two years that I also dropped face down in a puddle of water. Heroically I dipped my fingers into the icy cold water and scooped it out and it still works perfectly fine to this day.

The earpiece is a bit scratchy but that was a common complaint with the first gen Moto G's - apparently dust had a way of getting inside the earpiece and causing some distortion

Since you lot don't share any news here anymore let me post another one

-Been a rough day at work, but +got to knock off early so I took Hippo in to the local panelbeater to see what they will charge me for some minor touch-ups
-I heard from the housemate that someone from next door apparently had some medical emergency and the street was filled with police vans and ambulances. I hope they're ok but I haven't heard anything further
+Was good to drive Hippo again, even if it was to the next suburb over. Driving the work Caddy gets tiring :sweating:

Just gave my 75th blood donation today.

Up to a few years ago, for 75 you would be invited to a Certificate Ceremony in a posh hotel  but that is now for 100 donations.

Checking the blood donation website, for donating 75 I get an Emerald donor card, badge and certificate.

Roll on another 25 which should be in just over 6 years...

When I gave my 1st donation I went with a friend, his mother was a nurse and persuaded us to go as she said we would get a voucher for a pint in the pub next to the donation centre, Central Hall in Liverpool.

You can imagine our disappointment when we were given a cup of milky tea and a biscuit..... still waiting for the pint

So I finally got the time to pick up the screw the dealer lost when installing my cargo guard that they had ordered in for me.

Only to come home with a brand new cargo guard of a newer make(so I can now have the plastic cover thing installed at the same time if I want(and can find it in my basement where it has lived the last one and a half years)) because they stopped making/importing the one they sold me in the first place and couldnt source the parts.

Long days at work over the last couple of days.

Sunday was an early start to conduct a customs flight and deck inspection on an Accommodation Support Vessel in the Browse Basin.  We had to shut down on deck for a few hours.  Nearly six hours of flight time, and twelve hours of "duty".

:link: Vessel details for: POSH ARCADIA (Accommodation Vessel) - IMO 9639995, MMSI 311000283, Call Sign C6BJ7 Registered in Bahamas | AIS Marine Traffic (http://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/details/ships/shipid:3698892/mmsi:311000283/imo:9639995/vessel:POSH_ARCADIA)

Yesterday was a flight out to the Prelude FLNG (Floating Liquified Natural Gas) for a "crew change".  Got back in time for a meeting with the Big Boss from Perth.  During the meeting I got a phone call from our operations to say that we had to fly back up to a remote airfield to pick up passengers from a broken helicopter.  Nearly eight hours of flight time!!

- we lost my husband's sister to toxic shock from a perforated bowel a few weeks ago.  At 65 she was just too young to leave us.

-/+ my husband retired in February. Not sure if it is a good or bad thing. I still cook dinner when I get home from work, but he has picked up a few small jobs around the house. It has also given him time to do a lot of the running around, both before and after his sisters death. Her husband will need a lot of support. Unfortunately they were both a little 'challenged' intellectually.

+ we had 5kw of solar panels put on our roof about a month ago. We are still waiting for our smart meter to be switched over so we can earn a feed in tariff.  Our electricity provider is not really in a hurry.

-/+ our beloved Bella had five teeth out at the vet yesterday. She is sleeping on the couch at the moment, still a little fragile but given the ok by the vet. At nearly 17 years old she is getting a little slower, but she is still very precious to us.

Wow, tha t was a very eclectic mix. I need to rouse myself more often and visit.

Good to hear from you Cecilia. Sorry about the S.I.L. Bella is doing well!

We were lucky with our Solar, even though we used a cheaper crowd things happened quickly. Your time frame is more the norm. Solar is great, one of the best things we ever did. We've only got 3.8 kw (wish we'd gone 5 now) but had good returns over last 4 years or so.

+ I have a new reason to turn on my soldering iron. :happydance:

It's been a while since I built remote control central locking kits for French car owners in my previous forum (AussieFrogs), although I ended up custom designing and building about 20 kits for people across Australia.

Now a friend at work has bought himself a final generation Holden ute, which comes with a bi-modal exhaust, containing a relay actuated valve for diverting exhaust noise for added hoon factor, determined by the engine management system to keep it within legal limits.

My friend has commissioned me to custom design a remote controlled override for him to take over the opening of the bimodal valve at will.

I've already determined availability of the necessary components and I'm about to undercut the current commercial offering, which is priced at $500.

Potential profit margin? About 900% :happydance:

Good question "Nep"! I wouldn't mind making mine longer too... :D

I'm wondering if it might be better to improve the antenna in the receiver though? How easy would that be?

Gonz... how easy it to build a remote OR change the existing one for a garage opener to add distance to the opening of the garage....?

Easiest would be getting better antenna (if the device has external antenna). Making an opener from scratch is not rocket science with modern radio chips. Few lines of code and couple of bucks for the components. One thing we often forget that
there are rules and regulations especially for radio devices. If you buy an commercial device, there is a slight chance it has been tested and it meets the requirements. Or at least someone has taken the responsibility in the declaration of conformity. With self made devices things are not always like that. Your garage door might open better, but your neighbour might wonder why his remote controlled lights in the kitchen goes on every time you drive by.

My remote kits have a 300m range, so provided the garage receiver can do active handshaking to register new remotes, only the frequency has to match, typically in the 300-400MHz range.

Having ordered 4 mud flaps off Fleabay for my 2017 PD SR, I thought it was lovely sunny day for fitting them. Unfortunately all my stubby posidrive screwdrivers were too long for wheel arch manoeuvres. I then spent hours looking around for 90 degree dog leg screwdriver. No joy at Repco, Sipercheap Auto, Autobahn, BCF (hey I was desperate) and finally lost hope & went to Bunnings mainly for sausage sizzle. Staff here also  looked at me like I was alien, then I found them myself. $2.80 plus $2.50 for snags, a veritable bargain. I had given up hope at this point. Worked a treat managed to undo existing trim screws and install flaps without removing each wheel. Job done happy camper  :victory:

I finally got around to demounting my winter tires from my old car and have them remounted and balanced on the Hyundai rims. Now I'm all set for this winter too, got 8mm of thread again, the worn ones that came off had 2mm left(so no longer legal winter tires). And studs that are no longer worn!

Set me back 420sek/66AUD, which is a lot better than four new tires and mounting of them! Took them all of 15 minutes to do it for me this morning. :)

So that was the last time I had Kumho's on my car, left them at the shop, laughing that they can keep them all they want, I don't ever wanna see em again.

+ Just before heading out for my MRI scan (good governance on my 5 yearly health check, thanks ADF) I helped out a workmate with adjusting the suspension on his racebike before he heads out to Phillip Island soon.

+This is the same workmate who borrowed my Dremel (Well, technically my Ryobi rotary tool) to polish up other bits of his bike like the exhaust surfaces getting hit by road grime, and same tool I'd been using to help him fine tune the shape of his fibreglass fairings before he painted them.

++I got the tool back today with most of the big tube of metal polish he'd bought as well as a comprehensive bit set of polishing pads and wheels. Waste not want not. :D

Helmets ought to be compulsory everywhere - When in a car-bicycle accident its usually the difference of walking out from the ER or being rolled out on your new set of wheels.

Wise long term investment though. Love our double glazing. The noise reduction as much as the heat insulation.  Do the argon filled windows help with that as well?

Why are they cheaper than double glazed?

@Dazzler two glaze here is generally to hinged frames with one pane of glass in each. The tree glazed ones are casettes usually filled with argon instead of air. My new ones are PVC also, the old ones are wood(which requires a lot of time maintaining, painting and regrouting)

Should help a lot with heat insulation, my current windows suck the heat right out, there in bad condition and the two glass panes are thin (2mm) old panes. The new are 4mm. The new windows(.9u) have 1/3-1/5th of the u-value of my old windows(3-5u) depending on the condition of the old ones.
I calculated to save 2-4mwh anually, but will know by next december, hard to know what is lost through windows compared to the rest of the house. So they should pay for themselves before they need replacing again. Mostly changing them because they need to either be completly renovated or replaced, and it was cheaper to replace. (And the climate indoors should improve too).

@xiziz

Thanks for that. I am so glad we went for double glazing with our house. Over here generally (like ours) double glazed windows are made out of powder coated aluminium with two panes of glass with air in between. The glass doesn't look very thick but must be fairly strong as we had had quite a few largish birds (Crows/Ravens) crash into them fighting their own reflections without breakage.  :Touch:

At here we have lots of triple glazes with individual wooden panes, inner and outer panes hinged to the frame, and the middle pane hinged to the inner one so the whole package can be opened for cleaning. There are also rubber seals between them to make it virtually airtight.

However, it's very common to have some small holes in those panes in order to provide some air ventilation from outside to inside. We have had many examples of house climate problems regarding bad ventilation design, having a powerful ventilation fan sucking air out but forgetting to think where do you get the replacement air, leading to moisture and mold problems in case the replacement happens to come thru small gaps near ground level. Those small holes in window panes are up enough from the ground in order to prevent that.

Look what I found on page two!

We got our first real snow here 10-12cm, I got lucky and drove around all of Värmland in it falling for 5 hours today, 350km small windy roads. New winter tyres handles it well, much better than my old kumos. Filled up today too, and they average out at 4.4l/100km, which has to be considered ok for the conditions and beeing studded tires.

Why did I think you were working in the renewable energy industry? If so, you'd think jobs would be being created. I must have you confused with someone else.

Henning does. Siemens I think. Make components for wind farms and other things too I think. But it's all about contracts these days and things are pretty competitive. If they don't win enough contracts to keep the workforce going then some will be let go. Is that how it works Henning?

Yeah. It was wind farm components I had in my mind, thanks to my daughter-in-law's involvement in power distribution - currently a solar farm in Glenn Innes which is attached to a wind farm.

I do. For 10 years i've been working at Siemens Wind Power, but recently we merged with a Spanish wind company, Gamesa so we're now SiemensGamesa Renewable Energy. In the new company we're ca 25,000 employees worldwide but only IIRC ca 4000 at the location where I work. As always when a merger takes place, there will be redundancies..

By the way, we've just finished producing nacelles for an OZ windfarm called Badgingarra. I think it's in WA.

Finally got the end inspection written off on my new windows. Company has been hell of a hassle, which is why ive been rather inactive the last two weeks. They made some errors and were fighting back not to give us any kind of concessions at all. Well, even in Sweden, the customer is always right, but you have to be very persistent(lucky me to have an american wife). In the end we got a ~20% discount, and considering we replaced 22 windows, including fitting and framing, its quite a sum. Were just happy its over and we can look forward to christmas now!

And it got 5c warmer indoors, so I had to turn the heater down(even more monies saved!) quite a bit.

- Went to a shop to get some metal blueing chemicals. On the highway a stud flew from a car driving in front of me. It hit my windscreen. A smalls crack came on the lower part of the windscreen. Unfortunately it came right above the air vent. As engine heated up and it started to blow hot air, it made the windscreen crack. Now there is 40-50cm crack. I don't think it would pass MOT anymore.

+ The windscreen was in bad shape due flying rocks and studs. Almost like sandblasted. Now I have a good reason to get new glass...

+ It seems that me and my friends have been spending too much money in that shop. Chatted some time with the salesman and he gave me the chemicals for free!

Greetings from Tenerife!  I'm on my winter vacation, although at here it's +20 instead of -20 like in home a week ago. Unlike many, I'm not into frying my skin at beach or getting drunk in local bars. I have now a rental car, Seat Ibiza 1.2 TSI and will drive around with it during the week. The scenery and roads are very diverse, ranging from fast Autopista to very steep serpentines driven by 1st gear. I also booked a paragliding flight and that was amazing!

Later I will post more about the trip, some pics included, after getting back home and sorting out that huge pile of pictures and dashcam videos I'm making...

So I got out of a meeting an hour early tiday, sun shining and spring in the air(still 20cm of snow on the ground) I thought it was a good day for a car wash. Well, not alone in that thought, had three cars in front, all for the 10 or 15min programme. Chap in front was nice and talkative so the 30-40 min wait passed quick enough.

I decided against stopping after the wash to screw the antenna on again and just run the usb for music home. 55km later, I got home in a good mood, opened the door and see a 20cm gash of bare steel under the door, get out to inspect closer and see there is a huge dent also on the floor panel under the door.

Call down to the service station, the ask me to come down and show them the damage.

So another 55km back into town, some waiting and explaining and they of course deny that the was could have caused it at all. Another 55km home.
And in hindsight probably true, too much damage for beeing the wash, must have been a big lump of ice Ive run over or had thrown at the car from a lorry.

Winter takes its toll on the car. Guess this weekend is spent doing damage control, getting some primer on or something.

@Dazzler No idea, I just can't think of anything else that would cause this much damage without scratching, the ding is what, 50cm long, 8cm high and 4cm deep. No scratching that would be the telltale of something hard crunching in like a log/rock/car, just a big wide smooth dimple in the side skirt.
I do recall going over some pretty large chunks of ice that had fallen into the road when the thawing started, but it was in the morning and -15c, so they were probably pretty solid - I would still expect that to damage to mudflaps or the fender/front area not to the side like this. If it was passenger side I could buy that I'd been to close to a curb or something going round a corner, but not on the drivers side.

Paint was probably loosened when the damage occurred, just that it stayed put until the high pressure wash blew it off. Service station manager pulled the video and the ding was present before the wash, it would have been nice to blame them, but it was pretty far off.

Thanks xiziz. Now I've seen a photo I better understand your reasoning. I didn't understand how a block of ice could take the paint back to bare metal but yeah, your explanation is logical. Not a good thing but better there than in a guard or door.  :sweating:

Yesterdaý when I picked up Mrs G from work on our way to cadets, she was trying to tell me something or other while I was busy trying to work out why my cruise control wasn't engaging (I hadn't pressed on the brake pedal since starting the car) and she asks why I'm so distracted.

So I tell her about the old CC chestnut and she says "Why don't you marry your CC and her?" referring to Karen, the voice on my GPS.

I guess I do always use CC and GPS.

But I win. She forgot about the reversing camera.

Hi xiziz,
F me,  it's like you've come down onto something hard alright.
Hitting the big bits of ice is what you remember,  then that has to be it.
Hard to believe but at -15 , it would be dammed hard, lucky no more damage.

Yeah, could be worse. My plan was just to cover it up with base paint and the coulour it black again and coat it with lacker in the summer. But when I looked yesterday I found a crack where its bent on the bottom side allowing water into the threshold/sideskirt so I think its just as good to have someone pull it out and weld the crack. Probably expensive, so good thing its on full insurance.

Insurance is closed over the weekend for this type of errands so have to wait for monday.

@The Gonz my wife says the same about CC. So many times I got angry at it before figurin* out that it needed a tap on brake to engage

^ Yikes!  :scared: That needs to be fixed professionally, otherwise it will rust and expand for sure. While small stone hits at the engine hood are easy to fix with a paint and lacquer pen, such a big damage at a place which is vulnerable to flying ice and gravel needs proper attention. Let's cross the fingers that it'll get fixed good and the insurance is willing to cover it.  :goodjob:

A week ago I was cruising in conditions like this...

Well... home sweet home!  At Thursday we got 15 cm more snow... like we didn't have it enough for this winter! Going to work via this back road, because the other road there is often even worse in winter.

After the evening shift, this rural road wasn't plowed during my work time and there are some places which are prone to snow drifting over the road, like sand dunes in Sahara! You could easily get stuck or swerve to the ditch by hitting these. My workmate drove ahead of me by his 4x4 Nissan Qashqai, so there were fresh tracks for me to get through this. Otherwise I would have needed to turn back and go to the another road, hoping it wasn't blocked too.

At Friday (yesterday) the sun shined beautifully. Despite temperature being -5, summer is approaching and sunshine melted the ice on the road, which then refroze after splashing against the car. Also, shady areas of the road were now very slippery.

My car looked like this after driving in these conditions:

We haven't had as much snow as you got in Finland, but road conditions have been similar. The snow is now gone and we're getting positive temperatures, but where is that global warming when we need it...

Picked up my new (used) car yesterday, the i40 is a very nice ride...  :happydance:

Because I was too busy last spring with the house renovation I forgot to empty the water system in the caravan so the water boiler in my caravan had cracked during winter due to the below zero temperatures so what happens when you fill up the water tank and open the kitchen tap... f**k, the carpets were so wet I had to take them inside for the the night to dry them up on the heated floor.

@tohis yeah, I figured as much too when I inspected closer too, the crack is no fun at all. Crossed fingers for monday.

Yeah, winters been bad here too, they more or less closed my commute road over the hills, thawing damage have left holes and racks and bumbs so big they are a real danger. Started with them putting recomended speed 30kph signs(70kph road, 30km long). Last week the ambulances said there detouring to avoid the road because its unsafe. I started detouring two weeks ago. Bummer to have to drive around the hills, but better than crawling around at 30kph.

I know it looks like its in need of a wash, it always is!
Also booked in damage repairs, so in two weeks car will look good again, except for some small scratches my daughter put on the car last fall that I'll try to fix up myself this summer.

+/-  4 hours sleep for last three days - the summer hasn't begun yet, but we are overwhelmed with work (I am a bit different to others, for I am the only one here holding B1 for E170)
+ 3 more hours at the airport and I am going home

Times are warming, only -1c last night with the daily high expected up to a sunny 19c today! Shorts weather!

 :umbrella:

First fuel up on my new tires gave me 4.22l/100km, which was a pleasant surprise when 25% of the tank was driven on winter tires and both ecu and torque said 4.5l/100km.

Not too bad at here either, today's high was +11. I started my motorcycling season yesterday and went riding today too.

Only two weeks ago the night temperatures were down to -20, and just 12 days ago we had the last snow storm for the winter spreading 20 cm more snow (like we didn't have it more than enough already). But then it warmed up fast, and forecast show mostly sunny and about +10 daily high for the next week. I hope the limited quota of nice weather will not be yet used up for the whole summer!

Minimums of 7-11C and Maximums of 18-20C forecast for Devonport this week and Trish and I are sooking after 3 weeks of 20-30C Temperature range on our recent road trip.. I feel the cold more now I have lost some weight and developed PD.

+4 and raining for a change, what else can be expected for the weekend? However snow is melting away fast, and rain also help that. If someone paid me 1 EUR every time the sun shines at my workdays in evening shift, and raining during morning shift and weekends, I'd be rich!  :crazy1:

The weather in this side of the globe can be quite depressing at times, but at least our houses are well heated and insulated. Not forgetting the sauna (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finnish_sauna), Finns' traditional weapon against cold and anxiety!

Yeah, I could not live without my sauna either! Grew up east of Stockholm, so my sauna traditions are more finnish rather than Swedish..(svenneförråd/sweedestorage).

A week or two more and the birches should be ready for harvest. :)

@tohis

You make a good point. If it gets cold in Northern Australia the houses aren't really designed to cope. Cold tiled floors, big windows. At least if/when it gets cold in Tasmania our houses have carpet and double glazing etc..  :victory:

I tried a sauna once I didn't like it much. Mind you I wouldn't mind being a spectator when the ladies have one.  :snigger:

That's how it seems to be in warm places. In that hotel at Tenerife I stayed in at last month, there weren't any heating systems at all because it's seldom needed there. Even the A/C unit at the wall had heating mode disabled when I tried it.

I guess the sauna is something which you need to get used to before liking it. Maybe those ladies you mentioned would help you for that...

Also, there are lots of "saunas" abroad which Finns would not approve, most commonly throwing water to the stones being prohibited.

For once I'm not complaining about the weather.  The whole week has been very warm for early May, many days have been completely cloudless and it hasn't rained a single drop in 7 days. Today's high was +22, however nights are still around +5. Despite having lots of snow not so long ago, all of it has melted away, except some plowed snow piles still remaining here and there but not for long. The forecast show warm weather continuing at next week, but some rain showers may be expected.

18c or so in the water. Amazing for May! So in I went swimming for the first time this year. Even warm enough in the Air to dry without a towel!

May has been wonderfully warm, not a day under 20c in the Air, highs at 29c! And clear blue skies.

Strange how 18c to you is warm but frigid to me! Anything below 26c and I refuse to get into the water

That being said, anything above 18c ambient air temp and i turn the A/C on - I detest the heat and I am all too glad that we are heading into winter

@PhireSide I love the heat, when its 18, you only go in, take a short swim and back out again, at 26 you can actually be in the water for a prolonged time. Then again, my inlaws in texas think Im mad when im out in the midday sun drinking warm black coffee, but hey, when its dark, cold and rugged 8 months a year, you dont miss an opportunity for some vitamin D. :)

First time in 2.5 years I could leave my i30 at home and take my bike to work, we were having a conference 26km away(usually have 75km to work). So I had another swim when I got there at half past seven. Been another wonderful day!

Something seems up with the dpf too, regens every 250km the last 2000km or so, down from every 500km during the winter.

Yeah, this month has been really unbelievable. Daily highs mostly over 20, several times over 25, that's almost 10 degrees over average for May, and more than in any month at last year! What's even more exceptional is the drought - practically no rain since 4th day, only one brief afternoon shower 2 weeks ago. The forecast show next few days being only about 15 but then again 20 at weekend, and still very low probability for any rain at the foreseeable future. Only 8 weeks ago we were drowning to the snow, and now it's full blown summer everywhere!

Farmers are again in trouble because of drought. Crops would need more water than what they get from morning dew and tractor-driven sprinklers, which will lead to lower yield. The situation is completely opposite than last year, when April and May were very cold, then not so great summer came late, and whole autumn was hopelessly rainy which also lead either low yields or complete fails.

22 years and 150.000 km was needed for my first motorcycle accident to be true at yesterday.  :undecided: But don't worry, I'm OK and the bike will be fixed. A car suddenly came from behind a yield triangle, and I managed to brake most of my speed away but would have needed a meter or two more space. So I hit the side of the car at low speed and then fell over. My tailbone area was sore for a while but otherwise didn't have any other injuries. Even my suit and helmet survived without damage, except some scratches in the visor.

After getting up a scared old lady got out of the car, and she clearly understood being guilty. I called 112 and soon the police and ambulance arrived. After a breathalyzer test done by police I climbed into the ambulance for a quick check-up and no further medical care was needed. Meanwhile the opponent was receiving a fine for jeopardizing traffic safety, and she was apologizing several times. At Monday we will go together to the insurance company's office to file an accident report. Then I need to show the bike to their inspector before getting it to a repair shop.

The bike has now scratches here and there but no major damage and definitely not a write-off, and it was still fully drivable so I got back home without problems. The most visible damage is the handlebar bent from the right side. The bike still went straight and the front suspension moved normally, so the front fork is likely OK. The front fairing and headlights have scratches and several cracks, and the fairing support frame may be a bit bent. The muffler cover is damaged and muffler itself also have prints from the cover hitting against it. The rear brake pedal is bent but is likely reparable by bending it back. The handlebar right end and front brake lever also have scratches. The best news is the engine sides and radiator survived with zero damage! Even the rear bag didn't get any hits. I hope the repair shop can just straighten the handlebar at first, so I can then continue riding the bike while waiting the spare parts to arrive.

These situations tend to come suddenly, so my reaction wasn't a perfect textbook example. By braking at full force a blink earlier the collision could have been prevented, but in the other hand there were full potential for much worse.

What Dazz said.

Plus, don't try to straighten the handlebars or the brake pedal.
Metal fatigue could cause one of them to break while you're riding.

Sorry to hear of the accident but glad to hear no damage to yourself.

I would expect the car driver is more in shock than you given you had time to react so positively and able to reduce speed.

Speedy recovery.....

Last week on the news I saw this report.

https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/national/queensland/caroline-davis-died-while-out-for-a-jog-on-her-birthday-20180606-p4zjoj.html (https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/national/queensland/caroline-davis-died-while-out-for-a-jog-on-her-birthday-20180606-p4zjoj.html)

I wondered at the time if she maybe had headphones on and didn't look as well as she should have as she crossed the road. Although there was nothing in any reports which suggested that.

Anyway, the fact that she was fit and died on her birthday struck me as particularly sad.

Last night I got this post from one of my facebook friends, a couple who I have known since the early 70's, watched them get to know one another, fall in love and marry. Two absolutely wonderful people.

"For those who don't know the sad news, our eldest daughter Caroline (Caz) was killed last Tuesday whilst jogging. It was her 33rd Birthday & she was training for the Noosa Triathlon.

She was to compete in this year's Noosa Triathlon & was raising money for "Cure Brain Cancer". For those who would like to donate on behalf of Caroline, the link is as follows....  :link: everydayhero: Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival 2018 (https://bit.ly/2LVXecp) I know that Caroline would appreciate any donations. For those who are interested, her funeral will be on Friday 15th at St. David's Anglican Church Chelmer at 10,30am. We would like that those attending wear bright colours to celebrate the life of a sunny, funny, caring, witty, special young woman who will be dearly missed by many people. It is with a heavy heart that I posted this but I am determined that she is one truly good person whose memory is not forgotten."

It's taken me until this morning to be able to reply.

Meg and Richard were motor sport friends, RCCQ members and Meg and two other women drove a Fiat in the Repco Round Australia Trial in 1979. When I left motor sport in 1985, I lost touch but a few years ago thanks to FB we linked up again and at a rallying reunion a couple of years ago, I found them to be still the same absolutely lovely couple.

Life can be so unfair.

Wow! That is a pretty incredible story Trevor and so sad. When I hear of good people dying in their 30's and younger it makes me feel very thankful that I have at the very least made my early sixties.

When you think of the number of ways we can be "taken" it is amazing that some people manage to survive to my Dad's age or older.  :undecided:

Very sad news Surferdude...my condolences :blubber:

-yesterday my work Caddy here in East London (I am here for the week) that I had parked perfectly fine in the demarcated parking bay was t-boned by another vehicle (Isuzu KB300) as his brakes failed and he swerved to avoid another car. I wasn't in the Caddy at the time of the collision, but it was pretty sad seeing the b-pillar, floor pan and door all out of whack. I took the rest of the afternoon off to file the accident report at the local police station, deal with the company's insurance and gather as much info as I could.
+I wasn't inside the Caddy when it happened, otherwise I would be pretty bruised today!
-+I got my loan vehicle today, a Ford Ranger with the 2.2 TDCi engine. It's very hefty and a chore to park around town, but at least it has enough stonk and goes like the clappers once you put your foot down and you manage to get it in that meaty torque curve. Also pretty economical around town - the OBC reads 6.7l/100km currently. I'm deducting points for no fire extinguisher equipped, but thankfully this one doesn't have a Kuga badge on.
-+I finish up at my current employer on the 29th of June, and start my new position on the 5th of July. I am both excited for the new prospects but sad to leave as my current company has been very good to me.
+Myself and the girlfriend have a trip to Hogsback soon, and we are hoping to see some snow :victory:

First day of vaccation today, no more work for four weeks! Got some ferry tickets to spend a week on Gotland, also a tent and a roofbox. Was planning for denmark, but apparently the dog needs both a passport and a rabies shot to go there, the latter which needs to have been given at least 3 weeks prior to arrival.

Now just to hope the box arrives before we depart, otherwise its gonna be a helluva puzzle to fit everything in the car(unfortunatly we cant flat pack the dog, so half the trunk goes to him).

Sunny and 27°C just now, and will be several more days at least. However I still have one more week to sweat at work (where it's also hot inside now) before my 4-week vacation is on. I wouldn't be surprised a slightest bit if this weather goes away exactly then...

At least the weekend is now on, and I try to enjoy the weather while it lasts. Today I was in Joensuu for my car service and took my bicycle into the trunk, and then rode about 20 km around the city and suburbs during the service.  I should do that more often...

- our beloved cat Bella crossed over the rainbow bridge today.  At nearly 18years old she was a constant in our lives. We will miss her terribly, but at least she is with out beautiful dog Tarnie once more.

I can’t at this point think of anything positive to add.

I am so sorry for your loss

Sorry to hear about your loss, very sad when a loved pet passes. Obviously Bella had a great life with you and gave you a lot of pleasure for 18 years and I am sure you will never forget her or Tarnie. There is not much a person can say at this time to ease the hurt but when it eases it will be time to give another pet a great home & life.

So sorry to hear of tour loss.

We lost our 5yo cat in feb.
He was hit by a vehicle, not sure if car or van, right outside our drive and they never stopped.

Outright killed.

We said that was it no more but............ A visit to the local rescue shelter and we now have a female rescue kitten, 7 months old, who we have had for 5 months.
She has now been spayed and only this last week has been venturing out.

Apparently I cant link pictures from my ipad, so here is a link...(will fix later).

Got the box on the roof now, a Calix 600, swedish made box. 600l, 225cm long and 80 wide, started loading it today with chairs and stuff and man does it swallow a lot! Its like two more boots on the roof. And still under 2m for cheaper ferry fares.

Dog still has to share the boot with the tent, that is a little to big (high) to fit in the box. It does fit, in the centre, but then its hard to fit the other weird size stuff.

Sunny and 27°C just now, and will be several more days at least. However I still have one more week to sweat at work (where it's also hot inside now) before my 4-week vacation is on. I wouldn't be surprised a slightest bit if this weather goes away exactly then...

That was 3 weeks ago and the weather has been about the same whole time!  Daily highs have been 26 to 32°C, sunny and 30 just now, but in next few days will gradually drop to around 20 and afternoon showers with possible thunder can be expected (which is closer to our normal summer days).

The average temp of July was record high in many areas of Finland but the all-time daily high record of 37.2 from 2010 wasn't even nearly reached. A/C at home is a blessed thing and vital part for these hot days to be enjoyable.

Not so good news is that my Yamaha has been 2 weeks in the workshop for repairing those crash damages. Of course they found one more damaged part which wasn't noticed earlier, and now it seems it'll be delivered from Holland by bottle mail! The muffler fastener plate is warped and new muffler doesn't fit, so it can't be let to be replaced later.  :wait: :disapp:

- Tapatalk still refuses to log me in to this forum
- 105000km service cost me a fortune today: scheduled works + 4 disks replacement along with pads
+ it is time I changed my Ceed to something new - thinking of new Optima (had a chance to seat inside it today while waiting for the end of maintenance), new Ceed (it comes to market in September) or new Cerato.
- Hyundai doesn't have many cars to choose from in Russia (I would come to buy i40 then).
- VW passat, Volvo V40CC or V60CC would cost me too much with the options I want.

Since last Friday the bike has been back and all fixed.  Unlike earlier, the fairing has now the FAZER sticker which is omitted from bikes sold here, because the Fazer brand name is already owned by other Finnish company. Let's hope it will stay tyres down from now on!  :victory:

Then it was the car to have something fixed. During the last week I had to add air into the left rear tyre twice, and by closer inspection I found a nail puncture!  :scared: It has been there for some time, long enough to have the base of it break off. However it didn't leak much, only 0.1 bar per day. It was easily fixed at local tyre workshop by gluing a tubeless patch into the hole, taking only few minutes and cost 15 EUR. Never had that happen before, however 20 years ago I had a flat for unknown cause, which was then fixed by using inner tube.

Did you go rechargeable? Many years ago I had a "Flymo" it was over 30 years ago so it must have been one of the first. i loved it for the small lawn we had at the time, but the power cord made planning the cutting a bit tricky (accident waiting to happen)  :sweating: I would have loved one of the new whizz bang rechargeables.

The latest buzzphrase seems to be 'expropriation without compensation' and the ruling party has targeted 139 private farms in the first leg of their campaign. 100% of the farms seem to be in the hands of white owners, and the goal is to redistribute this land to the 'rightful land owners' (forgetting that the Khoi-San were the true first inhabitants way before Jan van Riebeeck landed here in the 1600's and way before the Bantu tribes migrated down from upper Rhodesia) by having the government hold the title deeds and in effect leasing the land to the black majority. But let's conveniently forget that the government have about 4000 farms in their inventory that have not yet been redistributed and is just sitting idle.

I am not making it a race thing, just telling it like it is. Our country is teetering on the brink of economic collapse as our currency has lost over 15% of it's value this year alone, food security is a major issue now as the farmers who will possible be losing millions of rands are threatening to burn down their farmland, poisoning the water if they are forced to evict their lands without any compensation. Everyone with the means and the way are emigrating and we are losing much-needed skills by the export of skilled labourers. Add to this fact that most state-owned enterprises are failing (just read the news regarding ESKOM, the SAA, the SA Postal Service) and in constant need of bailouts that the taxpayer has to fork out for, the latest being around AU$6b collectively. Our fuel price is the highest it has ever been, our VAT rate went up 1% to 15% for the first time since I was born and there is the general feeling that the populace of SA is a frog in a pot on a stovetop and the ruling party has now turned all the burners on.

When you have nothing to show as a ruling party after 24 years of being in power, you start stooping to lower and lower levels.

On the other side of town there are greenhouse tunnels that were erected near one of the poorer communities of Walmer and given to the community food programme some years ago so that they could participate and get involved in farming their own food. This was land that was given to them free of charge, and the tunnels were also erected using taxpayer money and they were also supplied with the means to obtain the knowledge needed to make it work as well as the initial consumables and supplies.

If you drive past there today, nothing is left. Starving cattle graze the barren fields where the tunnels once stood, the buildings stripped down to their foundations for the metal framework which was summarily sold to scrap dealers and the land is pretty much useless.

The sad thing is that the ANC is making the populace believe that 'owning' land will automatically make them wealthy, but they forget the fact that you need capital and human investment to make it work - you don't get to plant money trees on a piece of land and expect Range Rovers and Maybachs to fall into your hands :head_butt:

Yeah, elections are always a downer, never a perfect outcome. But atleast it gives us some scapegoats for the things that go rotten.

Put my car up for its 115000km oil change today, took the time to do the brakes I could not be bothered doing in march, should have done them sooner. Helluva job now with all corrotion. 5/8 glide pins had seized. Well, all sorted now.

Very pretty cat Meeha! Looks like a siberian cat, is neva a sub-breed or offshoot? I wanted a siberian one, but they cost a fortune here, so I have two bog standard farm-cats instead, one of which has proven a very good hunter, the other wont even set a foot outdoors.

I've had a hectic month, wife started studying full time (middle school teacher) so daughter had to go to kindergarten at the same time work load is high and meetings are aplenty. Guess my still some life with a stay at home wife belongs to the past, but hopefully we will get into a new routine soon enough.

Got 1 month left on my warranty and I will hit 120000km right in time for that. The race for 200k km is on.

You'll find the Siberian is the forefather and naturally evolved, colour point types were added to the breed to create the Neva.

I used to keep Seal Point Birmans many years ago (see pic), another naturally evolved breed and forefather to the Ragdoll breed.

My male Birman "Khan" was a tough bugger, used to beat my Malamutes up :D

it is said to be a result of Siberian-Siamese cats union)

 A nice round figure!

I've had 32 + cars and a handful of company vehicles and the highest I think I've seen was a bit over 100,000 (miles) in my very first car ( a 1968 440 Cortina)

Needless to say, I haven't had to buy many batteries or tyres in my 42 years of driving.  :crazy2:

Car just turned over 120000km. Starting to think about replacement but probably need another year to save up for the upfront. Loan on this one is payed off by Christmas. :)

Top contender right now is actually an Ioniq Electric, hoping for just a tad more range on the my20, and remote pre heat start. :)

Diesel prices are already up 35% since I bought the i30. At 40k/y it quickly gets expensive!

Sounds like a plan! Do you get incentives on electric cars over there? (we don't)

A Ioniq Hybrid is on my short list. Looking forward to test driving one when they are released in Australia shortly.

Post by: xiziz on November 26, 2018, 21:22:15
@Dazzler yeah, 60k sek($9100AUD) for a full electric, and a discount on home charging stations. It tapers off as carbon emissions rise for phev and hybrids to some set ammount after which a malus is added to the yearly tax. Petrol and diesel taxes are set to increase about 4%(2%+inflation) every year from two years back(~$.07aud/l) and seeing as we dont have a cabinet in office yet since september elections, that law wont be repealed anytime soon even if our politicans can get their bu- heads out of the sandbox.
I only do some 8 round trips yearly outside of the Ioniqs range, so thats not a big issue(not with a 3yo that needs wc breaks anyway regularly). Charging network is ok, and getting better, no problems on my regular routes.
(I would like the extra range rumored on the my20 so I have some play when the roofbox(yes, there is 3rd party racks, racks are mandatory for any car...) is on)

If I was to switch today it would be about 20% cheaper per month with the Ioniq BEV compared to i30 but since my loan is payed off before new years, next year will be cheaper in the diesel and 2020 about equal (by then the i30 has done 200k km which is when I orginally planned to have it written off(economicly) by. I think the economically optimal is to order a new electric next fall for delivery early 2020, that way I should get away without any expensive replacement parts and I’m not to bound by a good trade in value(if they give me a good trade, I will take it earlier though).

Thanks! All very interesting. I prefer the extra range and flexibility of hybrids, but I can see your incentives make pure electric a better option. I suspect your charging infrastructure would be more extensive than Tassie (or even our big Island) as well  :victory:

I will follow your journey with interest.

Until Australian fuel price getting over $3/L I do not believe Electric cars will take off here.

Most places where they have taken off have some sort of subsidy/ buying incentive and a good recharge network.

I think it is our lack of incentives, limited recharge structure and longer travelling distances that make them slow sellers here.

I think Hybrids are still the better option in Australia, especially for people like me who do road trips. Having 1000+ kilometre range, sub 5 L/100 kilometres economy and a much lower price than pure electric makes it a no brainer.  :victory:
Title: Re: Either good or bad (or both) news you'd like to share with us - part #2
Post by: xiziz on December 10, 2018, 15:11:04
Yeah, without subsidies 3aud/l is the logical breakpoint here too, there is a lot of positive news and reviews circling too. As batterys get cheaper and fuel prices rise the ev-market will just grow. We also have a lot of long distances compared to central Europe. A lot of people are buying PHEVs and noticing there driving more or less only on electricity but paying the extra tax and service for lugging around 200kg of engine and tranny. I think EV are the logical step for most drivers, renting a hybrid when you need to drive or tow long distance in short time.
Charging network is expanding fast and soon we hit critical mass where the public starts to mass adopt EV, where Norway and Iceland are today.

Edit: @meehalych congrats on paying of the house already, well done!

+payed off my car loan on 28th of December, its now all mine.

Left a nice big dent and a lot of scratches and hair. Actually it more ran into the car rather than in front of it. First time I hit a larger animal despite my many km of driving in very densely(by animals) populated forests and boy am I glad it was not a moose!

+I have a zero excess insurance for animal collisions, so it should sort out fine.

+ the half of the winter passed

You really should spring a few dollars more for somewhere with airconditioning.

I'm staying with "family" I have a whole private wing of the house with 2 rooms both with ceiling fans and a nice private bathroom FOC for 2 weeks so I can't complain. I do treat them to a meal or two out and cover my own food of course.

Only place around here that gets that warm is the inside of my stove and the sauna(42c in the sauna is to cold even for my 3y old daughter). Got 30cm of snow last week. Another 15 today if this keeps up its good for the rally next month, less so for my back  :snow:

On a more positive note, only four days and 600km left untill friday afternoon!  :drinks:

Got to pick up my car again today that has been in the workshop to repair the deer damage I accrued in January, not the weather to check thoroughly but it looks like just a good of a job they did on the left side last year, not a penny paid for that. Been driving a rental Ford focus, mostly paid for by insurance, 200 euro for 1085km over 11 days, including the diesel I burnt, 4.1l/100km.

Happy to be back in my car, but I will miss adaptive cruise control och the lower noise level (probably mostly studless winter tires and new suspension though).
