+ I have a new reason to turn on my soldering iron. :happydance:

It's been a while since I built remote control central locking kits for French car owners in my previous forum (AussieFrogs), although I ended up custom designing and building about 20 kits for people across Australia.

Now a friend at work has bought himself a final generation Holden ute, which comes with a bi-modal exhaust, containing a relay actuated valve for diverting exhaust noise for added hoon factor, determined by the engine management system to keep it within legal limits.

My friend has commissioned me to custom design a remote controlled override for him to take over the opening of the bimodal valve at will.

I've already determined availability of the necessary components and I'm about to undercut the current commercial offering, which is priced at $500.

Potential profit margin? About 900% :happydance:

Gonz... how easy it to build a remote OR change the existing one for a garage opener to add distance to the opening of the garage....?

Good question "Nep"! I wouldn't mind making mine longer too... :D

I'm wondering if it might be better to improve the antenna in the receiver though? How easy would that be?

Easiest would be getting better antenna (if the device has external antenna). Making an opener from scratch is not rocket science with modern radio chips. Few lines of code and couple of bucks for the components. One thing we often forget that
there are rules and regulations especially for radio devices. If you buy an commercial device, there is a slight chance it has been tested and it meets the requirements. Or at least someone has taken the responsibility in the declaration of conformity. With self made devices things are not always like that. Your garage door might open better, but your neighbour might wonder why his remote controlled lights in the kitchen goes on every time you drive by.

My remote kits have a 300m range, so provided the garage receiver can do active handshaking to register new remotes, only the frequency has to match, typically in the 300-400MHz range.

Having ordered 4 mud flaps off Fleabay for my 2017 PD SR, I thought it was lovely sunny day for fitting them. Unfortunately all my stubby posidrive screwdrivers were too long for wheel arch manoeuvres. I then spent hours looking around for 90 degree dog leg screwdriver. No joy at Repco, Sipercheap Auto, Autobahn, BCF (hey I was desperate) and finally lost hope & went to Bunnings mainly for sausage sizzle. Staff here also  looked at me like I was alien, then I found them myself. $2.80 plus $2.50 for snags, a veritable bargain. I had given up hope at this point. Worked a treat managed to undo existing trim screws and install flaps without removing each wheel. Job done happy camper  :victory:

I finally got around to demounting my winter tires from my old car and have them remounted and balanced on the Hyundai rims. Now I'm all set for this winter too, got 8mm of thread again, the worn ones that came off had 2mm left(so no longer legal winter tires). And studs that are no longer worn!

Set me back 420sek/66AUD, which is a lot better than four new tires and mounting of them! Took them all of 15 minutes to do it for me this morning. :)

So that was the last time I had Kumho's on my car, left them at the shop, laughing that they can keep them all they want, I don't ever wanna see em again.

+ Just before heading out for my MRI scan (good governance on my 5 yearly health check, thanks ADF) I helped out a workmate with adjusting the suspension on his racebike before he heads out to Phillip Island soon.

+This is the same workmate who borrowed my Dremel (Well, technically my Ryobi rotary tool) to polish up other bits of his bike like the exhaust surfaces getting hit by road grime, and same tool I'd been using to help him fine tune the shape of his fibreglass fairings before he painted them.

++I got the tool back today with most of the big tube of metal polish he'd bought as well as a comprehensive bit set of polishing pads and wheels. Waste not want not. :D

Pretty bike Dazz!

Helmets ought to be compulsory everywhere - When in a car-bicycle accident its usually the difference of walking out from the ER or being rolled out on your new set of wheels.
