Hi guys,

I'm picking up my Manual i30 SR soon and noticed that the headlights aren't as white as the premium model.
Any idea if I can just change the bulb? If so, what bulb is it?
tried looking on the internet to no avail.  :(

Links to photos for example.

The Premium gets LED headlights as part of the $5000 extra price "premium"

I haven't checked how easy (or otherwise) it is to swap globes in the PD. If it's not too hard I would be keen to put some Osram or Philips + globes in to improve the throw.

You can go to somewhere like Supercheap and play with their displays to find a nice white one.

I think the base SR are better than the earlier models headlight wise but the brighter the better!

Have a look in you manual under specifications or just take a bulb out and look.

The premium model has LED headlights at 6000 - 6500k, halogen bulbs can't match their spectrum.

The standard halogen bulbs are 3200k if memory serves me right, some of the Philips brand White vision and Diamond vision are supposedly up to 5000k though they still have a slight yellow tint to them and don't come close to the crisp LED colour.

Dazz beat me too it🙂

Just had a look in the Manual, looks like the Low beams are H7 55W and the High Beams are HB3 65W

Although the manual suggests getting the dealer to change things like headlight globes from a quick inspection these seem better/easier than the FD or my Calais to get at - High and low beam. :goodjob:

Did a quick search for HB3 and this link was first on the list (40% whiter than standard apparently) I'm sure there are even better (whiter and brighter ones around - at a price)

:link: Philips White Vision HB3 Globe 12V 60W 2 Pack 9005WHVS2 | Sparesbox

Can we use some like these without modifying/destroying our lights or affecting the warranty?

Or these?

Dazz, from your first link search for the Philips Diamond Vision, they are a bit whiter at 5000k

I've no idea about the fitment of LED's on your model, I didn't get a chance to look at the lights but I'd guess they would still be illegal...that wouldn't stop me fitting them though  :)

The last link you placed are for 100w bulbs, would they work :undecided:

Cheers Craig,

Again I'm thinking more about other PD owners than myself (like jaycelazatin).

I try not to drive too much on country roads at night. You've seen how much road kill there is down here. So I'm in two minds about upgrading mine.

My priorities are changing towards experiences rather than gadgets.

The road kill...so much road kill :disapp: I don't understand how there are any native animals left in Tassie

You may be able to an LED conversion kit, LED lights need to run at a stable temperature and dont cope well with heat. For this reason LEDs will have a heatsink and fan to keep the LED cool.
I know the premium headlights have a similar setup.

We take delivery of our PD i30 SR premium next week... ill be sure to see if they can be retrofitted. Id love to upgrade the Santa Fe headlights to LED

Would this mess with the electronics? Might make the car think the headlights are out or something? Will that void warranty?

I'll probably opt for an easier more straightforward option as Dazzler had mentioned. Just the Philips Diamond Vision like these would good I think

Thanks Dazz for finding the bulb size too by the way! :goodjob2:

No worries. They look like a good compromise.  :goodjob:

If you (or anyone else) swaps globes can they confirm how easy or hard it is to do in the PD. From my quick investigation it looks pretty easy with no need to loosen the lights like in the FD. :goodjob:

Edit: @jaycelazatin When you read down a bit further with that link even though it says white light, further down it says 5000K is actually blueish?

What do you think @CraigB

A friend who isn't a member  :winker: Mentioned a good deal on some from Germany at the moment I'll try and get some more info and a link.

5000k Diamond Vision will be fine, they have a slight HID look to them, probably as close as you’ll get to the LED colour with a Halogen bulb.

So I got that info from my mate. The site is in the UK and he's used them several times with only about a week for delivery. They have 20% off at the moment and these look like two of the best options without going LED which the RAC suggest could be illegal.

:link: Headlights - LED Headlights - HID Lamps | RACQ

:link: OSRAM Night Breaker Unlimited HB3 (Twin) | PowerBulbs

:link: Osram Night Breaker Laser H7 Car Headlight Bulbs | PowerBulbs

Being that the lights on the PD are already acceptable for someone who does very limited night time driving and we are fast approaching daylight savings here with a later dusk as a result, I probably won't bother myself.

However, if I did these would most likely be my first choice. Substantial upgrade for under A$90.  :goodjob:

Be warned that the night breakers have quite a short lifespan.

That's worth noting thanks Craig... Lucky my mate isn't a member (he would probably definitely argue with that) :snigger:

I’d tell him to read the specifications...the short lifespan warning is there in plain print  :D

Please note: due to their increased brightness, these bulbs are expected to have a shorter lifespan. We can only offer a 6 month warranty on the OSRAM Night Breaker Laser range.

Either way, I'm sure that UK site has lots of other options. The higher brightness globes are mostly prone to a shorter lifespan (particularly in the FD diesel anyway)

Just did an about face!

Just searched those Nightbreaker Unlimited Globes on Ebay and with the 18% off (until 10PM tonight AEDT) I got them for an amazing $63.01

That was for 4 premium globes including postage from the UK!

At that price couldn't say no!

Well they came in 8 days from the UK! Ordered 21st and arrived 29th. I got a card to say I had a parcel, but thought it was only some medications which weren't urgent. I didn't expect the globes so quickly so only went down at 5pm last night to collect from our local postal agency.  Had two parcels!  :happydance:

Globes were very well packed and probably the easiest to switch over I've ever had. Would have been even easier if I had Donald Trump's small hands!  :snigger:

By 5.45pm I had switched all 4 over.  :victory:

They are certainly bright!  (considering this was taken in daylight)

Still slightly yellowish, but I was more concerned about the brightness than the colour. They should last fine for me as hardly ever drive a night. But when I do!

PowerBulbs site is great for delivery to Australia and their prices are great. Unfortunately owning an FD diesel means I deal with them quite regularly.

On a side note they only keep top quality bulbs and have been slow to get into LED replacement bulbs. My attempts at buying LED on ebay have been unsatisfactory so far and I guess this is why PowerBulbs have kept out of this market.

those look nice and bright @Dazzler !

looking at buying this and taking advantage of their 20% off at the moment. Are these the right headlights?

:link: Philips Diamond Vision H7 (Twin) | PowerBulbs

Also, I'm trying to find in the manual the bulbs for the lincence plate and change it to white but can only find that it says FESTOON.
Maybe even the interior light too but can only find it saying W10W for map lap? is that the right one? I'm looking at section 8-4

I'm a sucker for LED/white crisp lights on cars!

Yep, they should do the trick (I did well $63 for all 4 - although mine are night breakers)

Not sure about the other ones sorry. You might have to take them out and have a look what is written on them.

Festoon bulbs come in different lengths, just take one out, measure end to end and then buy appropriate LED.

Just an update on those Osram globes I got in early October.  Saturday night I drove home from Launceston at about 10.30pm and it was a very dark night (no moon?)

First good drive in full darkness since I got them. Very happy. The PD seems to have a wide throw  even on low beam. With the extra bright globes, low beam was very good ( perhaps the best I've had) and the high beams were brilliant!  I was amazed how far ahead the signs were lighting up. :victory:

Can't see the need for extra driving lights especially with the minimal night driving I do.

Sounds great Dazz.

I replaced  my i30 PD reversing bulbs as they were worse than disappointing with the rear view camera vision to this pair of T10-T15 LEDS. It is a bit of squeeze & twiddling getting the buggers to fit with ø16mm plus LED into ø17mm hole but the result is much brighter & safer for reversing camera for $7.90. There are other versions which would probably fit for cheaper & not sure about its longevity as I only put them in on Saturday.
In my previous Veloster, I used Diode Dynamics from US which were a high quality LED but much more costly US$40 pair plus postage  :blubber:

Similar to the ones I used :link: 2 X T15 15LED Canbus Light Turn Tail Backup Reverse Globes Projector Lens 360° | eBay

The difference is mine are 15mm diameter with 2835 chips which are brighter than the 5050 chips.

@Dazzler
The LEDs I bought off Ebay were a snug fit that's all, the LEDs Craig mentioned would be an easier fit for sure and if they are brighter even better although a touch more pricey, and we all know how much you like saving money Dazz
