For a year or two I have been suffering from really painful leg and foot cramps when in bed. So bad that sometimes it damages a muscle and leaves me limping by day.

I have tried all the remedies Dr Google and my GP have come up with - to no avail.

A couple of months ago I tried leaving off red wine and noticed a distinct improvement. In fact - after about 3 weeks of denying myself red wine - leg cramps became rare.

So - I tried drinking red wine again and within a couple of days they were back. To prove it isn't a fluke I have repeated the cycle twice more and last night had a couple of glasses of my favourite full bodied red - a Portuguese wine called Espirito da Santo (only available from Laithwaites) - and I have been out of bed since 3:0 am this morning with crippling leg cramps again. So that's it - another pleasure stopped in its tracks.

My wife prefers white wine so I now need to offload my stock of 38 bottles of red wine of various varieties and vintages.

Aint life cruel.  :blubber:

Pardon - a cheap wine! - no way Jose.  I may still drink it yet and put up with the pain.  :head_butt:

He could be right (I do cheap everything and so far so good) Lambrusco is my red of choice (which makes the bartenders sneer) but at least it's cheap.. From A$3.50 a glass and about A$8 a bottle.

Although with my reflux I'm not drinking alcohol in the evenings any more.  :Pout:

I'm not a grape drinker.

Prefer the hoppy version.

Tried drinking more Indian tonic water?

The quinine in it helps my leg cramps (and it mixes splendidly with Gin).

(so did getting new work shoes that have a rolling sole mind you, lots of standing still in my work, but that's not even close to as good for the spirit)

Indian tonic water  is it straight from the Ganges river :crazy1: :D

Quinine doesn't look like something I'd like to be drinking, look at the adverse side effects :link: Quinine - Wikipedia

Back in the day I associated cramps with low level of salts. Tried combining the wine with caviar or salty chips?

That's what the Gin is for! :crazy1:

Everything good comes with a side order of bad - but that's a lot of bottles of superb red that might be worth a few "adverse effects".  :crazy2:

Used to have bad cramps when played more sports or did a physical work during hot summer months. My cramps were caused by dehydration and lack of salt. Started to take magnesium pills in those sporty/hot days and the cramps were gone.

Take either Magnesium Tabs or Indian Tonic Water for two days then enjoy the red wine again. Both remedies work for me and the wine is a bonus

I have been taking magnesium tablets for 6 weeks now and have been drinking a bottle of tonic a day for a couple of years - but I am still suffering from night leg cramps when I drink red wine.

Well then I see no alternative, you just gotta start drinking in the morning so its out of your body by nighttime.  :snigger:

Alan you certainly set something off with your problem and the attempts to try and cure it.  There is only one answer STOP THE RED WINE.  I know i would rather pack it in to get a good nights kip. Keep the bottles for a long time then sell at a profit or give as presents.

I know now where I have perhaps been going wrong - I have been drinking Aldi, Lidl and Spa tonic water rather than Indian tonic water.

I met a guy in the street today with a beard and wearing a turban. I asked him to sell me some of his tonic water but he just stared at me, grimaced ran away........it was nepalling.

As soon as you do find the good stuff, get some India.
