Hyundai i30 Auto DCT jerky start stop

Hello All,

I recently bought an 2 year old i30 Auto, its been 4-5 days. I have never had a auto before, so cannot say for certain if this is the car or just the fact of life for automatic (DCT) transmissions, but here's what happens.
The start is, on occasion jerky, and the car takes a few seconds to find the right gear/ speed. Also, speeding up is a hit and a miss at low speeds. The ride isn't smooth, its not bad, but I can feel the car constantly trying to second guess and moving the gears, so do not really feel as if I am in control. Also, the stop is always jerky, on applying the breaks the car jerks, even at low speeds.

Is this normal for a car, considering that it is still under manufacturers warranty, do you think I ought to go back to the dealer to get my clutch looked at? Or is this the sort of thing that's usual with all autos and it just needs getting used to?

This is a job for the dealer - it may need re-programming.

No DCT auto is quite as smooth as a torque convertor box - but Hyundai DCT transmissions are normally reasonably smooth and not jerky.

Welcome.  I have one of the latest series 3 (2018) PD models with a DCT transmission.  Apparently they have been refined over the past few years since first introduced.  I'm very impressed with the smooth operation of mine in almost all conditions including when cold.

Even though yours is an earlier version it shouldn't be like that. Definitely take it in and get it sorted. Please keep us in the loop. Hopefully others with a similar model will also see this and comment.  :cool:

Went to the dealer and they reckon that it just takes a while adjusting to an dct auto, drove another i30 and thought it was pretty much the same. So, not sure, but will give it another week or so, and if it still is an issue will go back to get it looked at.

Sounds a bit like they are fobbing you off to me.  :undecided: I hate that!! Any other dealers nearby? From feedback on this site, there can be huge differences in the response given to faults by different dealers.

Like I said, mine is a newer version, but just feels like a very responsive auto to me.  :cool:

Fair enough, will give it a few more days. The dealer I was speaking to was an independent one, maybe will try one of the Hyundai dealers next.

It is much better now, the dealer changed the brake pads which sorted out the jerky start/ stops. Also, I have now got a bit more used to the auto DCT transmission, so does not feel as unpredictable as it used to.
