I'm forever accidentally hitting reset instead of release cruse control on my steering wheel. Which becomes frustrating as I do like to keep an eye on different legs of journeys. So I was cycling though the display working out which is best to see on the dash and i determined the Distance to Empty Indicator was the best page to view as then I wont reset my MPG or service counter again. BAD IDEA!!

So there I was 50 miles later staring at the fuel slowly counting down, keeping my eye on the road. I got curious and wondered what would reset actually do on this display and I was stupid enough to try it.

The display changed to 0 Miles. I laughed a bit thinking that's funny, just before the car suddenly stopped and he fuel indicator hit bottom.  The car started, went for about 5 seconds and then decided its got no fuel again. I sat there for an hour phoning up my service department and finally having to get the AA out to put some petrol in the car to top it up giving it 20 miles.

They eventually took it into a garage who had to remove all the petrol, reset the miles from -184 back to 0 again before filling the car up again.

This is warning to everyone not to go playing with things before reading the caution notice on page 43 in your car owners manual.

In my user book it says that on dte

When the remaining distance is below 30 miles, "---" will be displayed.
The working range is 30 to 999 miles.

No mention of the zero-0 number.

Did the low fuel warning light come on?

Wow! That seems extremely odd to me. As manuals vary by country and model in some cases do you have a picture of page 43 or a transcript of what it says please. The reset button won't actually affect the amount of fuel physically left in the tank!  :crazy1:

Did they say why they had to remove the fuel???  :undecided:

How much fuel was in it?

Did you simply run out of fuel?

The dte is the amount of distance before the car is empty, you'd never actually take it to 0 as that means there's no fuel.

Several of us have proven there is a reserve by going past 0 remaining. I'm guessing about a 3 litre buffer. Not something I would recommend doing regularly though.
