I was speaking with a few local detailers about better options for prewash/foaming as the foam cannon I have works well but I get barely enough time to cover the car before chewing through a litre of mix :crazy1: which isn't very economical for the wash liquid I use or the water use.
A quick demo on the IK 9 foamer was enough to impress me so I've ordered one from ZAS :link: IK 9 Foam Sprayer/Foam Lance - ZAS (https://www.zas.com.au/product/952/ik_9_foam_sprayer_foam_lance.html)
If I make up a tank (5ltrs) with 40mls of wash liquid I should manage to get several washes now depending on which foaming valve I go with, even double washing will be more economical :)

That's awesome Craig. I might recycle one of my 5 litre weed sprayers... Thanks for the idea. :victory: (starting to sound like Gonz!)
You didn't really think I would spend that sort of money on a foamer... :whistler:
But some members might. :hatoff:

:goodjob:
As long as the weed sprayer has an adjustable air intake nozzle to create foam then it should work :undecided:

It has! Cool... :happydance: ..and any residual weed killer in the sprayer will stop any weeds growing on my car! Bonus!

Wont stop the dogs weeding up your wheels though :snigger:

How's Elena enjoying the new car?

Loving it. She texts and calls every day.
The last few times were about what 'high beam' means and whether the centre rear view mirror is adjustable by hand and what octane fuel to use.
Today she called to tell me she was driving with the sunroof open. While we spoke (using the Android Auto in-car hands free) the lane departure warning chimed, which gave us a laugh.

Glad she's happy... Happy Wife, happy life. I'm also pleased she went the i30. :victory:

these things just spray on the soap then ya use a sponge ?
They spray on a specialised foaming wash like this :link: Optimum Car Wash 946ml - ZAS (https://www.zas.com.au/product/426/optimum_car_wash_946ml.html) which clings to the surface for a prolonged amount of time allowing the dirt to be lifted away harmlessly without using a sponge that will drag particles of grit across the paint work causing those circular scuff/scratches in the clearcoat which require polishing to remove.
My process:
Spray foam the car and after several minutes before it dries hose off, any leftover dirt on the panels can then be washed off normally (bucket wash) or spray foam a second time and lightly sponge off then rinse by sheeting the water, sheeting will remove most of the water on it's own.
I'll then give the car a light spray of detailing gloss enhancer :link: Optimum Instant Detailer & Gloss Enhancer 504ml - ZAS (https://www.zas.com.au/product/427/optimum_instant_detailer_and_gloss_enhancer_504ml.html) which helps with the final drying process and gives a lovely glossy shine, use a super thick microfibre drying towel (not a chamois) while the car is still wet with gloss enhancer.

That sounds like my wash routine, at least for the first 3 months, for the next year it's a thorough wash with the Karcher, and finally it slips to an annual visit to Car Lovers :)
In all seriousness, while the IK 9 looks great, if your a bit cost concious I'm sure you could get get very similar results with one of these :link: Nylex 12L Backpack Garden Sprayer | Bunnings Warehouse (https://www.bunnings.com.au/nylex-12l-backpack-garden-sprayer_p2962006)

Well thanks for that. I've just bookmarked a UK ebay seller (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Optimum-Car-Wash-Concentrate-32oz-1-Litre-Wax-Friendly-Well-Lubricated/272924041086) (£19.99 ) and am looking for a decent foam lance for my Vax VPW4 (2500W).
It's a great time to be alive :D

I used to wash with the karcher/gerni with included wash foam bottle, fairly useless compared to a foam cannon, but the cannon wastes to much liquid.
Since the car was opti-coated I've raised my level of care to premium liquids and more conservative applicators :)
I had a look at the Bunnings sprayers and the Supercheap one's, they'll probably work fine though I wanted something a bit more robust that will outlast the others, the detailers have tested everything out there and reckon the IK 9 outperforms and outlasts all others :victory:

Interesting, Thanks.
I wash mine (bucket and sponge) atleast once a week and this sounds like it might speed the process up.

super concentrated 250-1 :D can get in 4ltr container as well at much better value
Yep - that's the one I've ordered. I abandoned my Vax foam sprayer as that'd tie me into the Vax, so I ordered an IK9 as well :D

You probably already know this but with the lances double your mix, normally 20ml in 5 ltrs for bucket wash, 40ml in 5ltrs for the lance :goodjob2: though I'll test at normal ratio first and see how well it foams up before I double it.

So, is this foam applied to a dry car or does the power rinse have to be there first... :Cuppa: :Dunno:

Foam it first and let it soak, unless the car is hot or extremely dirty then I'll hose/pressure spray it first to remove most of the crud or cool it down.

I use all Bowdens products on my car. Generally snow blow with their snow cannon, followed by two bucket wash with nanoliscious, dried with boss gloss and finished with AfterGlow.

I did try Bowdens for a while, seemed fine and probably on par with Finish Kare and Meguiars.
Optimum is probably the best I've used and the super concentrated mix lasts for ever, works fine for bucket and foaming, the detailer gloss enhancer has far superior lubricity I'm finding and the shine is absolutely amazing :goodjob2:
-
Well I unboxed mine yesterday (5L Optimum & IK-9 sprayer) but it'll be a while before I can try it all out. I was hoping the foaming session would spare me having to use a bucket, but the included "wash mitt" suggests it's more of a pre-wash system.
-
Steve, all foam jobs are prewash, by removing most of the dirt and loosening up more stubborn matter it's then easier to remove remaining dirt in the next stage with light washing and less chance of scratching/marring the surface.
If your car is completely covered in dirt and mud then pressure hose of as much as possible first then use the foam lance ( if not so dirty start with foam lance), after several minutes then rinse and use the same Optimum wash at 20ml in 5ltrs of water for a light sponge over - rinse and dry.
Better drying results can be had by sheeting the water off the car then spray the whole vehicle with Optimum detailer gloss enhancer or similar prior to drying to use as a drying aid with microfibre drying towels.
A little video explaining sheeting

Thanks Craig, I'll bear all that in mind :victory:
Can't run the video just yet - stuff like that isn't available here at work
-
Well I used my new lance & Optimum Car Shampoo.
I think I may have to review my mixture ratio. I used 40ml in the 5L sprayer and inverted the canister 3 or 4 times to get a good mix.
Maybe I need to use more than 40ml? Maybe I need to use warm water?
Whatever, it made not the slightest difference to the light dirt and few bugs stuck to my paintwork. It was as if I hadn't foamed it at all
I used the black foam line that came installed within it - maybe the green or orange may be more suitable.
These pics are the "after". The "before" looked just the same...

Someone didn’t read their instructions :whistler: :D
The orange line is for cars Steve, gives a nice wet foam that will slowly run down the panels taking a lot of the dirt with it, it won’t remove more stubborn matter but does loosen it up so it’s easily removed with the bucket wash.
40mls is more than enough in 5ltrs of water which should cover the car like snow, try to swirl the shampoo to mix in the container as inverting it will likely cause it to foam up in the container and that’ll deplete the available space for air pressure.
-
Funnily enough, my instructions don't even mention the 3 different foamer lines :( (unless I've missed it)
I'll try again soon with the orange line.
Oops
-
Open the back folded page and top right under EN you’ll see the explanation of the different mixers :)

Make sure to pump it right up till you hear the air release valve whistle.

Hi All
Thinking of getting a foam lance from autobarn
:link: Bowden's Own Snow Blow Cannon (https://www.autobarn.com.au/bowdens-own-snow-blow-cannon)
Does it really worth the money and help with the washing? I don't mind spending the money if it work.
Kind Regards
-
I use the bowdens cannon. I think it helps. New formula snow foam they are about to release looks the goods too
-
You could get it for $10 cheaper with a bottle of wash from here and get free shipping.
:link: Bowden's Snow Blow Cannon BOCANNON | Free Shipping | Automotive Superstore (https://automotivesuperstore.com.au/bowdens-bocannon?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI7ceDv4qo3QIVEbaWCh1TQASNEAQYASABEgIv8fD_BwE)
-
Cannons work well but you’ll go through product like it’s going out of fashion if you want a nice thick foam that clings.
-
New foam coming from bowdens looks to cling pretty nicely. 30ml of product and whole car (sedan) is foamed nicely. More likely to use 50ml for proper coverage though.

You should try the Optimum, 20-30ml treats 5ltrs and will cling like marshmallow if you want it that thick...be a waste though as you want cling time to soak but need it to run off to take as much dirt as possible with it :goodjob2:

Which lance? my ik9 takes 40ml to 5ltrs of water which will last 4 washes, only need 20mls to 5ltrs in bucket.
-
I got the Bowden Cannon
-
I got the Bowden Cannon
I don't know what mix you make for the Bowden though being the Optimum is 250:1 concentrated so try half what you usually use and see how it goes, if needs a bit more then add till you get the desired result.

I might try one of these items, not heavy are they? (2 shot shoulders )
Usually duck to car wash, hot soap, rinse repeat.
Went to different place the other week, selector was a bit wobbly , wow!, green soap! Went to rinse and foam brush started.
One more click and HP rinse was selected. Green soap was engine degreaser, GD was very clean.
-

You need strong biceps to get it fully primed

Yes the priming is a little work out, I usually have to prime twice to give the car a good coverage, though the ik9 itself with water weighs a little over 5kg's so not heavy.
You'll still need to bucket wash after rinse off though Mick, foaming is only a prewash treatment to help loosen dirt.
-
Cool grab yourself a large Microfibre drying towel while your at it Opti-Coat Drying Towel - ZAS don't ruin your ceramic coat with a chamois.
@CraigB - that towel is just awesome. Dried the whole car in one go. Just Awesome.
I gave the car a good spray from the Karcher. Wash away as much as i can and loosened all the dried dirt. Then come the shampoo foam, 5mins later, Karcher all down and then dried up. Car clean and sexy again.
Thx gents for the ideas and suggestions.
-
Did you use a sponge at all? Two bucket wash? Any drying aids?

Glad you like it mate :goodjob2: should really bucket wash after the rinse off just to be safe, don't want dirt to be trapped in the towel and dragged across the paintwork
If you pass by ZAS again grab yourself some of the Optimum Detailer Gloss Enhancer :link: Optimum Instant Detailer & Gloss Enhancer Concentrate 3.8L - ZAS (https://www.zas.com.au/product/585/optimum_instant_detailer_and_gloss_enhancer_concentrate_38l.html) brilliant stuff, after final rinse off spray the car all over with the detailer gloss then dry with the towel...she'll sparkle like a gem :D

CraigB is too perfectionist - I'm a lazy guy. Here is what I did basically
1 - Park in shade
2 - Karcher the car a good few mins to make sure that all the dirts and bird droppings are gone :) - The longer you do this bit, the less you got to clean later. The reason I spend a bit of time here is to loosen up all the dried stuff.
3 - Shampoo foam lance the car with a nice layer - leave it 5 - 6 mins, make sure that it thick yet can run because you want it lift the dirt off the car. - keep an eye out while you wait during this 5-6 mins, don't let it dry.
4 - Karcher it all down and give it another good rinse.
5 - Remove garden hose from Karcher and use this technique to reduce drying time - Water Sheeting - :link: Dry Your Car Faster with the Sheeting Method - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWmkb2mZ_ck)
6 - Use that towel CraigB recommended and dry what left.
7 - Throw that towel in the laundry and hopefully wife will have it ready again in 2-3 weeks time when the car need washing again. If you tell my wife this last point, I will not share with you any more tips :)
Car is awesomely sexy again. - Effort require would be a 3/10 - pretty easy with the Karcher and Shampoo foam do all the work.
Note:
- My car got nano ceramic coating.
- Be mindful Karcher near the reverse and front sensor. If you use the heavy duty Karcher head, it might damage the electronics so I have read somewhere on this forum

My method is as follows (all bowdens gear).
-wheels cleaned using wheely clean and separate wash bucket
-snow foam
-two bucket wash
-dry with boss gloss and big green sucker
-every couple of months I do a layer of after glow for extra protection
My car is also ceramic coated
-
Blazorax, make sure the wife doesn’t wash the towel in hot water above 58c or the microfiber will be stuffed, and liquid is better to wash with as powder never fully dissolves which will leave abrasives in the microfiber.
-
Pick up some of bowdens microfiber wash. Works wonders.
-
Ok .. I'll consider the 2 buckets method. My car is not that dirty so maybe that is why it does not require 2 buckets.
Yet as with the outcome today, it seem pretty good for me. If the next few times it turn out the same outcome, then i'll stick to my simple quick clean method.
So how do you wash that towel Craigb? .. just throw in the washing machine and do a cold cycle?
-
What colour is the car?

White

Yep, throw all my microfiber towels in together with bath towels and use liquid wash, don’t use softeners or anything else as they get a waxy coating.

I wash all my microfibre towels separately. In saying that I use probably 5 or 6 each wash. One for wheels, one for door jambs, one for main body, two to clean glass. Plus the sponge. All in a cycle together on 40 degrees with microfiber wash. Tumble dry to keep fluffy.
-
Bloody hell, so many requirements for these towels, at this rate, I need a second wife to help out.

My main Optimum towel does the whole car including windows, I'll use one extra for door sils, wheels don't need any as my Optimum ferrex wheel spray leaves wheels spotless after rinsing, only use my interior window cloth once every three months which is same for interior trim as the Optimum glass cleaner and and trim protectant repel dirt and dust :)
Tumble drying Microfiber  don't think I'll risk it...the instructions mention to only use liquid wash (no powders - softeners or wool mix) and don't tumble dry.

Different products, different instructions. I could get away with one cloth but would prefer my main microfiber not to touch wheels or door jambs. Too much contamination risk.
Wheels I dry just so there is no chance of water spotting.

Cheaper and easier just to swap cars every two or three years, like I do.
I "threw in the towel" going to all this trouble years ago. :snigger:
