Rough running

Hello all. I am  currently running a 2011 I 30 CRDi auto as a taxi. It has covered 180,000 miles and generally runs ok. Had the timing chain done about 5k ago. Since I’ve had the car it sometimes runs really rough. When I pull up at a junction it will sometimes sit there and feel really ‘shuddery’. It also feels like it’s surging when you’re driving along a a set speed. Sometimes 30 sometimes 40 mph. Also every few days it really smells of exhaust inside and outside the car. It often does this in conjunction with the shuddering effect. Our garage mechanics can find nothing wrong with it but then they are useless (we call them clown cars  :lol:). Also the trip computer shows she’s only doing 29mpg. I kno it’s driven in town a lot but does this seem excessive to anyone. Many thanks for any answers in advance.

I can recall a similar issue mentioned not that long ago. I can't recall the verdict though. Let's see if some with better memories and /or better diagnostic skills come to the party. If not, I'll have to do some searching.   :cool:

Quick answer is that the car is over-fuelling. Could be injectors , but more likely a fuel pressure control component on the fuel pump or fuel rail. Also need to check the ECU is still up todate.

It's the DPF regenerating, quite normal behaviour..  :P

Ok. Thanks for those answers. I did think it must be something on the fuel side of things. Re the dpg regenerating. Should it do it that often. I don’t do much more than 500 miles a week and it seems to be doing it far more often than it should. I’ve driven other same model i30s and they didn’t do it. As for the ecu being up to date I don’t hold out much hope of ‘clown cars’  being able to sort that!!

Only diesel i30's with DPF will do it. Most of us Aussie members can't relate as the i30 diesel only had the DPF added in the latest (PD) model over here.

It's not the distance you travel weekly that decides how often it regenerate, it's the amount of soot in the dpf, which again will depend more of the driving pattern than the distance.
If the regeneration doesn't finish when you stop the car, it will try again when the engine next time meet the requirements. That's why you'll find it regenerating more often than you find necessary..  :cool:

Off course there could be a faulty sensor causing the ECU to think the DPF is more clogged than is.

Yes Dazz, cant say I miss DPF either. Mind you if someone was doing 500 miles a week in his diesel past my house, I might find some relief, like a shotgun,. :cool:

Question: @Asterix  or anyone ; Why would the car run rough when it regenerates ? The burn off is ex motor.

I can for sure feel the extra vibrations when regen is ongoing. My guess is that the process restricts the flow in the exhaust.
I don't mind the DPF if that's what it takes to clean the exhaust. I would much prefer to loose the EGR...

Ok thanks all. I will mention the overfuelling suggestion to the garage next time I take it in. There are lots of little problems on the car but I have managed to turn it into a nice little car just apart from the above mentioned problem.
