Anyway, I've been talking to an old mate of mine from rallying days. His name is Graham Scudamore-Smith and he owns Fulcrum Suspension which he started early in the 70's after spending a couple of years in Sydney with one of the specialist suspension places. Most of that time he was on secondment to Allan Moffat's touring car team as their resident suspension specialist.
As Fulcrum have always been big on power steering servicing and replacement I thought I'd ask him about the electronic power steering issues and whether or not he had any after market solutions.
It all got a bit involved but he says most of the problems he runs into are still with wear in the rack and pinion, which is easy for them to rectify.
On the electronic side he says that replacement after market complete units aren't far away.
This quote is part of his reply, typed on his phone so not necessarily grammatically correct. Cost to set up test various software etc on the electrical is a challenge, however we are doing it. So can help, unless damaged, no need to spend 4k+, plus it is only a short time before new units will be available, aftermarket
After I explained the failures we had experienced here his reply was Hi Trevor, the symptoms you describe are a mixture of failings of electric steering and software, As we learn, the cost outside of warranty I think will be reduced, if you have a customer specific, can I look into it. Cheers
I guess this isn't a great deal of help outside of SE Qld, although he does have agents all over Australia so it's possible he can set up some line of communication. I'm thinking mostly about anyone who is outside of warranty and faced with a full scale replacement.
Anyway, I'm posting this here so it's all on record. If anyone comes up with an issue, maybe we can put them in touch with him.

So just to throw the proverbial spanner in - have read through the vehicle recall article and unfortunately my little beast is outside of the VINs identified as potentially affected - aside from spending a s**t load would the safest assumption be to have the steering checked by the local Hyundai dealer or independently? Sick of complaining to hubby about the damn EPS OFF and not getting anywhere :crazy2:

What helped me with my EPS problem was finding out which tyre/suspension place the Hyundai dealership uses and then taking the car there and asking them to do a wheel alignment.
I found this out totally by accident, by the way.
When the car was taken there (in my case Bridgestone Tyre Centre), they were unable to perform a wheel alignment on it due to the steering sensor being "all over the place" (their words).
Then, the dealership listened and repaired it under warranty, after two and a half years of inaction.

Just being pedantic SOB - according to my manual - there is an 'ESP OFF' indicator and an 'EPS' warning light... no 'EPS OFF'
If 'EPS' has failed both 'EPS' warning and 'ESP OFF' will illuminate (as the steering is part of the stability program).
If 'ESP OFF' is the only one illuminating then it may not be steering related.
In my copyright 2009 manual - pages 4-46 (ESP OFF) and pages 4-47 (EPS)
EDIT: There is also an 'ESP' indicator - which lights when the ESP system is actively operating - page 4-45.
The ESP indicators are orange (light on self check at start) - I think the EPS warning is red

Someone might correct me but wasn't this what happened when that brake light switch which was replaced under recall, played up?

I've read through a few threads with the same or similar regarding the brake switch fault - although can only find the recall notification regarding the EPS which according to my VIN and manufacture date taken from door well is a few months earlier than those recalled...
I've only replaced all 4 wheels/tyres within last 3 days with wheel alignment (running Yokies 195/65/15) which has improved the squeal factor on the rear end (prior to this I had checked pressures and was working on getting "new boots" all round) - the local tyre franchise stated that fronts were incorrect size as were rears (being female didn't think to check that out prior) and so kept with what was recommended by manufacturer - however since checking their paperwork I've noticed they've got pressure on all 4 rated at 36 psi which I thought was over the standard recommended numbers?
As I'm looking through and posting there's other stuff that has the proverbial light globe pinging that just reiterates my lack of knowledge which no doubt would be somewhat amusing to most reading through lol....

There are many owners running 36 psi. Manufacturer's recommendations are just comfort pressures. :rolleyes:

:plus1: When I replaced mine a while back they put 36psi in - tyres (same model as OEM) seem to be lasting longer this time round.

Everyone has got to start somewhere - the fact you are looking through and having those moments is good. Just keep any eye out for some of the reprobates err... members smart alec comments and done't be afraid to return fire!

Thats some pretty promising news Trev.
Sarc2005 if your ESP OFF light is on you need to get it checked out. Very high chance of brake light switch requiring replacement if it hasn't already been done as part of the service campain.
It may also be the steering angle sensor is out of calibration, if you have had wheel alignments done without recalibrating steering angle sensor (can only be done using diagnostic tool) then the light could come on.
