Serpentine belt noises - harmonic balancer? Or could be the AC unit?

Bought my 2009 i30cw 1.6L TD third hand last October, in part because of this forum   :goodjob2:
Recently had the serpentine belt go, lost power steering, speedo, managed to pull out of traffic into a Maccas carpark and called for backup (dad to the rescue). We replaced the belt, then noticed that the tensioner needed replacing as well - the spring was fully visible. $472 later drove home, but now have a lot of rattling in the engine at idle, which goes away once I get close to 1500 RPM. Replaced the bearing in the idler pulley, but still noisy. Also get a high pitched whine when the AC goes on, and when we did the water bottle spray test, noise went away - most effective spraying just before the harmonic balancer. Side point - trying to look up parts online, nothing to definitively say if the HB1754N will fit my car (why do so many places not recognise that the cw exists?)

3-for-1 bonus questions- ESP OFF light is on almost continually now (I've never switched it off manually) and I can turn cruise control on, but the set button doesn't work..... any ideas?

Thank you!!!

ESP light is more likley than not the brake light switch. This was a recall item. Try parking the car near a reflective surface and see if there is a delay in the brake lights coming on. If so, the good people at Hyundai will replace it for free.

Only other thought is it comes on after disconnecting the battery. Always seemed to go off fairly quickly, but from memory could be reset by turning the steering wheel full turn both ways (don't quote me on this, an expert will be along soon to say if I am wrong.

I am not sure about the other situation, but having a belt go is a good way to do all sorts of damage.....

Hi Pandora,

The motor in the Wagon is the same one as in the hatch, be it 1.6 diesel or 2.0L petrol.
The water spray is an excellent indicator of source of belt noise. Are you sure you have enough tension? @tw2005 will be here shortly to verify the correct belt, but sounds like you have the wrong one or tensioner is not assembled correctly.

Re the ESP: Not sure how long you had been driving without the belt....You say you "lost power steering, speedo" when the belt failed. Therefore, your battery was near dead and the alternator could not keep powering the steering (EPS) etc.
Is the battery ok? ESP and EPS are inter-related.

5PK1811 is the size of the OEM. Watch out for a seized alternator clutch pulley. You'll have to take the belt off again. Grab the pulley with your hand  and rotate it clockwise quickly in a sharp jolt, the alternator should momentarily continue to spin.

Clearly you got the tensioner genuine, in future there's a guy in SA that specialises in these ans $145 from memory. Repco etc are just as bad.

The belt is routed correctly?

I had same issue, replaced tensioner(did not need to) replaced alternator pulley (main cause ) that fixed 85% of the issue. new belt and idler pulleys, gave up at that point.

I've since replaced the whole powertrain in mine .

What sort of kilometres has this thing got?

The old motor after all the work . belts pulleys etc.
