Title: i30 - Less than 46,000 miles and requires new clutch
Post by: Stuwoolf on October 18, 2019, 21:50:40
With less than 46,000 miles my i30 needed a new clutch. I put this down to the car being a hire car for first 10,000 miles of its life.

During the process of removing the clutch it became apparent there was an other issue. There was engine oil all over the place. Crankshaft oil seal needed replacing.

After new seal and clutch fitted every thing was sweet.......for about 150 miles. Then the clutch began to slip and judder. In 3rd gear, when driving, slight pressure on clutch pedal causes judder. Only reducing speed stops the judder. Also in 2nd giving it some gas the clutch slips for about 10-20 seconds (revs rise, foot off gas, revs fall and the slipping can be felt to stop as friction plate gets grip).

What is going on? Pressure plate springs weak?

Grateful for thoughts on this.

Becoming very disillusioned with Hyundai. :undecided:

Who did the work? Was the flywheel machined? What parts used?

Thanks for your reply.

In response, the job was done by my friend who does all work on my cars and, when I had it, my Harley. I have complete trust in his abilities. The clutch kit was not OEM and no, the flywheel was not machined (never known this to be a requirement when changing a clutch) I have no doubt if there was visible issues with the flywheel these would have been made known.

Thanks again for you response.

Grateful for further thoughts and views.

46,000 miles  needed a new clutch.  hire car for first 10,000 miles .....

No need to machine flywheel.

Instead of blaming the car, have a look for oil. From your description, (and presuming mechanic changed the crank seal) the seal has failed again.

There is no doubt the seal was changed.

Is failing crank oil seals an issue with i30s

OK thanks, for the thanks.

I have never seen one fail on the FD or GD models. In fact its a fairly rare for any make to have a major failure .
Before someone contradicts me, a few front seals were blowing out on FD manual diesels in OZ and North America. tw2005 and I worked out that it was caused by excessive crank end float. Seals were ok.

Car manufactures use seals and various other parts that are made by companies specialising in that particular field. Therefore, your mate probably used the same seal made for that car.

The original may have failed due to bad luck or bad servicing. (old oil, poor filter, dirt in the oil). If the surface of the crankshaft has been scored, then you have a problem.

Having ratted on..... :crazy1:....Im assuming the seal has failed based on your info. You need hands on advice. Good luck

?  :faint:

I'm quite suprised at that comment.

I would never do such a large job and just throw a clutch kit in without it. had a mechanic do that once and it was rooted in a week or 2.

This is what most if not all clutch kits will say

"Warranty claims will be rejected where the flywheel is not machined before new clutch kit is fitted."

I'm also wondering if there is oil contamination could it be on the box input shaft side? We have read of a few including under warranty cases of the seal on that side failing

The last replies explain why I am less than enamoured with Hyundai. In order to maintain warranty my car was serviced as required by service frequency and done by the main dealer. The last service by the main dealer was a fiasco. I caught them out as they hadnt done the job I expected and paid for nor did it follow the Hyundai service sheet. You could say its a dealer and its not the company. At street level the main dealer IS the company.

I should also say the clutch and seal were replaced 5 weeks out of warranty.

Its left a scar and I will not buy another Hyundai. Hankered after a Tucson but not any more.

Hey ho........

I guess its another strip down to check whats going on in there.

Remove the starter and maybe a borescope? If oil is spraying in there it may be visible .

Your story of catching workshops out is of no surprise. Must come with the territory. Caught  a dealer  lying and charging for parts not fitted.

Depends upon one's perspective of a "large job"

If so called mechanic saw the flywheel was in such a state to kill a new clutch in 2 weeks he needs arse kicking.
The warranty covers Ipswich work where the local peasants wear the clutch down so that it is metal to metal. Therefore, flywheel is badly scored.

Gearbox oil is reasonable. But the smell and direction of flow should alert the mechanic to engine vs gearbox oil
