Title: DRL lights Hyundai i30 GD
Post by: AVP on August 09, 2021, 12:01:12
Hi all

My DRL lights are broken on the left side. They don't work at all. It seems that some resistors might be blown. There is condensed water in there for months. The fog light works though.
Anyone experienced this? How easy is it to take that thing apart? I assume I have to take off the front bumper, decouple the wire and take out the entire assembly (Fog+DLR) and then take it apart, change the resistors (does anyone happen to know the values of those resistors?), and then re-assemble.  I think the most difficult part would be to disassemble the DLR as it is assembled with some kind of glue that acts as a seal to block the water. Seems that it wasn't very well sealed or it just deteriorated in time.  So, what kind of glue or silicone is that? Anybody did this before? :) Thanks

Personally I'd try and find a second hand light through a Hyundai wrecker or eBay  :link: USED- LH FOG LIGHT 3 PIN TYPE SUITS HYUNDAI i30 GD 2012-2017 GPT | eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/224210970708?hash=item343403e854:g:SGsAAOSwGJJfmCvE)

Correct but meh, I would rather fix it, it should be 100 times cheaper. :P For example, a new one is around 100$, some resistors are less than 1$ :P

You'll have to pull it apart then to find out which LED's have been used if you want to fix it yourself, without breaking it and getting it sealed water tight will be a challenge but if you're capable then go for it.

Maybe an option to buy from eBay, I got a pair of DRLs for my 2012 GD premy a while back.

Also was after a EPB switch, $45 from here but $250 from local dealer.

I have exactly the same issue.
I'll get a quote from the dealer tomorrow, however I'm off, with the car, driving to Italy next week.
Does anyone know how to turn off the DRL on a GD? I'd rather have no DRL and leave the headlights on than have a broken DRL and attract the police. Thanks!

Argh! €900!!!!!!! to supply and fit one DRL. This is in Germany as well, so not the most expensive place.
I see on e-bay I can get a new one @ €400+

How difficult is it to remove the bumper? Looks like a DIY job?

With any luck you might be able to pick one up from a wrecker, though you can get the pair in a complete kit from Shark racing  :link: 2012-2017 i30-Elantra GT Factory Fog Light Kit - Shark Racing (https://sharkracing.com/2012-2017-i30-elantra-gt-factory-fog-light-kit/)

The bumper is very easy to remove, one screw in each of the wheel arches and several push screws top and bottom of the bumper then pop the sides of the bumper out and pull away.

Best to place a blanket or something under the bumper before removing it as you don't want it to drop on the floor damaging it  :)

Thankd for the info, but tragically I went with the dealer option as I live in Switzerland, and am driving to Italy tomorrow and didn't have time to DIY it myself. I appreciate I could just drive with the headlights on, but still I rather wouldn't drive with a defective light in a foreign country. Not worth the aggro and the Italians like a roadside stop.
A breakers yard did respond with one for £200, but they wouldn't ship to CH, so I'd have to get it to the MIL who would ship it here, pay the tax and fees for processing, so probably £300 to me, but a couple of weeks delay.
SO the light was actually 600 ( OMG! ) and only 125 euros to fit it (so yes must have been easy). I have the old light, either to repair or torture!
Actually I'm going to experiment to see where the leak is, I suspect, as it had a good cup of clean water in it, that the car was parked in a particular position/camber for a few days in heavy rain and the bonnet run off was draining directly onto it. There's way too much water for it to have come off the road. Where I park has terrible cambers, not flat at all.  I'll have to make sure it doesn't happen again at these prices.
Thanks for that linkt to Shark, cheap enough but a bit unclear if they are CE type approved. If the Swiss spot something not OEM they insist on the CoC, which basically explains why there are so few modified cars here or accessory shops.
I'm off to lick my wounds. Hopefully it won't happen again or I won't have the same time pressure on me.

The link states "factory fog light kit" which would mean they are genuine OEM Mobis parts, Shark Racing are mainly genuine part suppliers unless otherwise stated as custom/aftermarket

Enjoy your trip :)

@AVP My fellow compatriot ☺️, don’t bother . I had the exact same problem as you. Some water got somehow in and the led strip was dead. Fog works. I wanted to change only the LED strip but the adhesive mentioned is almost impossible to remove. That’s because heating around that area will cause the plastic case to melt and deform. I did that. It also seems to have some bolts which are not easy to unscrew cause they are sealed inside the case. It’s like it was designed not to be able to repair it unless one has some really special tools. I end up buying a new one (it’s around 220 euros) 😩👀

@Marioux,

I managed to repair mine, the thing is, it's not very hard to remove, you need to have a hot airgun, adjustable, give it some 300 degC, hold it for 3-4 minutes while sliding on the edges, put a - screwdriver on the clips and try to detach them one  by one, and even put the screwdriver on the margins and slide it inbetween the glass and the case until the sealant (glue) detaches the two components, then you can lift it up slowly, you need a lot of patience though. After that there are 3 screws for the led strip, which has also the PCB.
The PCB itself is entirely SMD components. You need some electronics specialist to fix it, if you aren't one yourself. I for instance can't see anything corroded or burnt on mine. It's a type of power converter from 12V to 36VDC, with a TLD5098 controller. The leds are in series.

In desperation to fix it fast, and thinking that a new one is way to expensive for the damage caused, I bought a broken one (very cheap, around 50$, the glass was cracked and the case itself had cracks) with good electronics, dissasembled it, took out the pcb, mounted on mine, seald it with extra silicone on all the margins and edges to try and make it waterproof, put the hot air gun on the margins to make it maleable and soften the sealant, let it dry for 24h, re-installed it on the car. Looks as good as new.

Now I have the old burnt PCB that I will fix in my spare time, and another led strip to test it.

Someone asked how to take the bumper off. Well, on the GD, from 2011-2015, there are actually 3 screws on each side in the wheel arches, not one as someone said, and they are a bit of pain in the a$$ to remove as they are angled and have tiny holes to put the screwdriver so the space is very narrow. I recommend removing all the plastic screws(top, bottom) and just the side of the bumper where your fog light is, pop it out from that side and you can reach the 4 foglight screws easily.  You still have to take out the wheel from that side, remove the mud cover or half of it to get to the bumper screws (extra 4-5 plastic screws)... If you do it once it'll be much easier the 2nd time ....

L.E.: I striked-out bad info, if you read further down, CraigB is right (one screw only)

There is no need to remove the screws inside the wheel arches to get the bumper off, as previously mentioned the one screw either side where the bumper meets the guard, then there are several push screws under the bonnet along the radiator support and some more push screws on the bottom where the bumper connects to the air deflection panel.

I guess you are right, I removed all the 3 screws of the bracket, thinking they are all holding the bumper as well, in fact, only the first one, and the most easy to access one holds the bumper (among with the plastic clips). It makes sense. I was wonderig why one bracket got out as well when removing it . However I didn't bother to look in detail after I took out the bumper.  Oh well, good tip for the future.  Edited my previous post. Thanks.  :goodjob2:

Well, back from holiday, I've submerged the light in a tray of water, and can say there is no leak where the lense is attached to the body of the light.
My conclusion therefore is that parking on a strong camber, with the torrential rain, caused the problem. Looks like the run off from the bonnet pours directly onto the back of the light where the fog light is inserted, and the water got in there.
So a design flaw. I had something similar in a mk IV Golf, where there is a hole cut into the bulkhead and the water gets in and gets the carpets wet. I managed to fix that myself ( and remove and dry the interior) thanks to the info on the MK.IV forum.

I'll see if I can make some adjustment or do something to avoid it happening again. I'm not having much luck as I got a stone chip on the windscreen on hols, and last night left it unlocked and some herbert got in and stole some loose change. They left the satnav though, so could have been worse.
It's just been called in for the MFK (Swiss MOT) as well so despite the cost, happy I did get that light fixed.

This guy cuts a hole in an i40 headlight to get at the board. Any idea if that's feasible for the i30 DRL?

Final thought on my dead DRL. It worked for some time despite having water in it. I guess had I been quicker and immediately took the light off and dried it out, it may have saved it's life, and me £900.

Sorry to hear that. That was quite expensive... :( If you could just detach the power from the DRL and fix it later maybe you could save it with just a few pounds (mostly a new sealant, if you had a hot air gun at your disposal or just borrow) and some of your time.

No, you cannot remove the circuit board by cutting a hole into the headlight case, you will make a lot of damage. The board is hold by a plastic support that is attached to the LED aluminum support. Here are some uploads of how mine looked after I disassembled it:
http://imageupload.io/g/NK1eleKDJM (http://imageupload.io/g/NK1eleKDJM)
Besides, if water went into it, you need to remove the "glass" anyway and change the sealant after you fix the board and all is fine.

You can check this video:
http://youtu.be/W7p1AC1_jjg (http://youtu.be/W7p1AC1_jjg)
from where I got the "inspiration" and managed to fix mine, I think he explains the process very clearly. Just use water and soap and spray it onto the headlight margins, take out the fog bulb and blow air inside to see where/if bubbles are forming. If nothing comes out, your reassembly is a success.
