Title: 2011 i30 diesel engine miss at around 1500rpm.
Post by: rickey on September 13, 2021, 20:18:53
Recently purchased a 2011 i30 auto wagon.  Great car but develops a miss at around 1500rpm. Usually when cold mabe the first 5 to 10klms of driving. After that it's fine. Any ideas? Is this a common problem? Thanks. Rick.

I have a 2010 version of the same car and when mine is cold I can have a slightly rough idle but never notice any roughness once driving and certainly once warm it runs smooth but I also always warm the car for at least 5 minutes from cold so maybe I would get the same result as you if I drove it straight away after starting.

As long as it runs ok when warm I don't think it's anything to worry about but you could run some injector cleaner through which may help.

Thanks. Hopefully someone who has a similar problem will have a solution. Local hyundai dealer thinks it could be injectors but to me if it was injectors wouldn't it have the miss at all rpm?

It could be the glow plugs. One or more may have failed so it's more hesitant to start from cold and runs unevenly at first, but it's fine once there's a bit of heat in the cylinders. The engine has done 225,000 miles and still has the original glow-plugs and injectors. I'm reluctant to change the plugs due to the risk of them snapping off and/or chewing up the cylinder head threads. It's never failed to start after a few extra seconds of cranking.

Quite common I think - I've two i30 1.6 CRDi's and both do it. It's not a "miss" as such, its more of a stumble.

Tried different fuel, new glowplugs, injectors etc, nothing made a difference and I now just live with it. I heard murmurs of an ECU update from Hyundai fixing it, but as it's well out of warranty that's not really an option for me.

Out of warranty or not, if it's an issue with the system that an update is designed to fix then it would be done for free at service.

So for me this is 'resolved' - it's crappy fuel.

This for some reason happens to me only when I exclusively buy Asda diesel (UK), no other fuel. I run my tank to 'empty' and fill completely every time and typically this is done at Morrisons (another UK supermarket), and the issue was gone for months to the point I didn't realise until.... I filled up at Asda again.

Within about 3 days the 1500rpm stutter was back.

So I'd say, try a good flush through of other fuel and see how you get on.
