Title: HELP! i30N Fastback..which Hy has to go?
Post by: Paolo5 on March 14, 2019, 05:00:05
I found out today that my local Hy dealer will be taking delivery of the new i30 Fastback within the next week or two.

This one captures my imagination and I am seriously considering rationalising my savings and making it my next car.

The local agent will ring me when the 2 demo Fastbacks arrive. Then I will have a serious 'optic nerve' and a test drive.

My dilemma:-
*I have an immaculate FD that I bought new in 2010. It is absolutely faultless and would almost pass for a new car! It has now done only 95K. I keep this one in a garage.

*My second car is a 2006 Getz that has done 165K and is in amazing condition. It too is a joy to own and drive. This one lives under a carport at the side of my house.

*I also have a Holden Combo that has been professionally converted to enable it to carry a person in a wheelchair. I use this one to take my 96 year old Mum to cafes, the beach etc. I keep it in Sydney (where my Mum is) in my sister's garage.

So many questions....
Should I go ahead with the Fastback? (This would mean 4 regos.)
Which one of the 2 Hyundais above should go?
Should I just try to forget about the new/blue one?
Should I build a new carport or garage for one of the Hyundais?

What should I do?

I’d keep either the FD or Getz for shopping and trade the other :)

The Getz would likely be getting long in the tooth at 165k so maybe sell that one :undecided:

That's a hard one! I would definitely sell or trade one of the two Hyundais. I guess it depends on your finances and what you can get in a sale or trade. Why not put top dollar on both and see if you can score a win. I guess the Getz is worth about 3k and the FD about 6k? I would be leaning towards getting rid of the Getz I reckon. Even though I did love our little 2006 1.6 manual.

My pick is the Getz. Sell it , dont trade. And you can do better than $3k if you dont panic.

As I recall, the FD is diesel? A crdi in that condition is worth more than $6K and will be just as good in 10 years time. Keep it.

Inside running on the motor industry, currently its like real estate,  good time to pick up a bargain. But, its hard to impossible to sell and prices are low.

So take your time to sell the car for cash, and screw the dealer down as the purchaser. We have seen too much here to pity a Hyundai dealer.

Currently the Oz economy is in limbo. People have deep or empty pockets.  They have no real government. The current bunch of dysfunctionals will be out on their ears, but not until mid-May.

Also banks are reluctant to lend. Everyone is nervous.

Life is too short not to live how you want so if you like it and it will bring you joy go for it.

I too would get rid of the Getz. In excellent condition it is a great cheap car for a new driver and I would say pound for pound you will do better selling it, as it will be at the premium end of the entry price point (people will look at a lot of crap then see yours and stretch to pay your price).

There is no rush, there will be plenty of cars brought in so don't pay near full price for a just landed car. Hyundai might say there going like hot cakes, but there were plenty of N's to buy off the floor at the Hyunda dealer I visited recently. They were the base model, and Hyundai claims the premium is more popular, but hey it is the same car, albeit with less kit, but when they are on the floor, you can screw the stealer as they want them gone, especally if reports are that sales are slow.

Mate, Ive been self employed for circa 45 years, talking down the economy is just perpetuating the cycle, so Im slow to say too much.

Business profits usually go south when we have bad news, then usually recover overnight. But this is a doozy and its been getting worse over the past 3 years.
My Remax mate has gone from 17 employees to just 3. My long term and smart friend ( hairdresser) has sold her car to stay afloat. West End markets  ( where cash is king) 30% closed.

We haven't had a recession in so long, were due unfortunately.

The next election could be a good one to lose...

Thanks for your inputs, guys!

I once had a 300ZX Nissan and took a new 350Z for a test drive. I came away thinking that my 300ZX was as good so walked away smiling.

I test drove a Veloster Turbo afew years back and valued my i30 diesel even more afterwards.

I know that I get great joy from driving both the Getz and the diesel, which is why I have 2 cars. I figure that neither of them owes me and I would rather have them than have the money that I could get for them.

Time will tell with the Fastback. The test drive is getting close now but still no word on its arrival.

I test drove a new Elantra a two or three years ago.
As much as I loved the shape, when it came right down to it, I realised it drove just like my five year old FD.
But driving it enabled me to walk away happy.

In the end I only changed the FD because I wanted something with a slightly higher driver's seat.

You'll have a better idea once you drive one.

When I drove the N Hatch, I realized that the SR suited me better...

It has a flat battery (currently on the charge)...this could, however possibly become terminal...

(Did you see what I did there?..... Currently......Terminal)

Nah....wouldn't do that. She has to come up with that decision herself.  :whistler:

My local Hyundai dealer has not phoned yet regarding arrival of the new Fastback i30N.

In the mean time I have been doing as much reading as I can find about the i30N.

I found a dedicated i30N website and on it I have found an issue that seemingly hasn't been rectified:-
http://n-cars.net/forums/threads/issues-with-5th-6th-gear.131/ (http://n-cars.net/forums/threads/issues-with-5th-6th-gear.131/)

From what I have read, whole gearboxes have been replaced in some cars and gearbox dismantling (and replacement of synchro cones) has been done in others.

Even a car delivered this month has issues engaging 6th gear...so the problem seems to remain unaddressed in new cars.

The notion of buying a car that costs more than a 3rd world kidney and having to get its gearbox removed and dismantled soon after delivery has swayed my thinking and considering substantially.

I just can't fathom why (if afflicted cars can be remedied with some new/different parts installed) current cars have NOT had the same new/different parts installed when they were being assembled.  :crazy1:

Still looking forward to seeing the Fastback 'in the metal' and taking it for a spin but might sit tight on my diesel and Getz. They have truly demonstrated their worth to me.

Wow, that's interesting Paolo! They've kept a fairly tight lid on that issue. 1st I've heard of it!  :crazy2:

In UK, seems to be far more hatchbacks than fastbacks available 2nd hand.  A couple of weeks ago my son and I took the fastback for a test drive.  Car drove brilliantly but both of us preferred the hatchback for looks.  Recently bought the 130n performance and I am delighted with it!  Boy  does it go!  The only difference that I can see between both models is the boot space on the fastback is slightly bigger.
My son has a Golf R which is slightly faster but he really likes driving mine even though his is 4 wheel drive and safer but he says that cornering in mine is more fun and a different driving technique is required.  He really loves the sporty exhaust sound and wants to show it off to his mates!
If you can afford it suggest you go the Performance  model, better equipped, slightly faster,  bigger wheels, better brakes and just for the better sporty exhaust sound the extra money is worth it !
Good luck.

But glad that you are happy with your's, Hillmanhusky!

BTW...I nearly bought a Hillman Husky MANY years ago..hesitated and then rang back....but it was sold.
I did have a Hillman Minx for 24 years though...but that's another story..

Hi Paolo, stick with it matey.  The Hillman was my first car and was already x years old!  The small estate was great for moving things about.  Made some good petrol and beer money, moving small settee's, armchairs, motorbikes etc.  The bits of body rust never seemed to get worse even in uk climate!
Had a dreadful water pump which meant any long distance motoring had to be taken with care.  Changed the pump  twice and after a while problems returned.. Got tempted by the might of Ford and bought a well used 2nd hand mark1 Cortina.  It had bench seats with a coloumn change that used to get stuck in 1st gear.  Car had plastic bench seat that if you cornered sharply you would slide on the seat and hang on to the steering wheel for dear life.  No seat belts in those days!

Jeepers! I'm getting on (62) but didn't experience anything like that with my earliest cars... thank goodness.

My first car was a 1968 440 Cortina Mark 2. It was a 4 on the floor with bucket seats. I cant remember if it had seat belts!  :-[ :crazy1: (it was 1975)
