That's a long way off. Seems a realistic target. Makes it a bit tricky for special interest owners though!

There have been similar thoughts recently on several European countries, for example Germany has proposed banning new petrol and diesel passenger cars at 2030.

However, these proposals only applies to new ICE-only vehicles, so new petrol-hybrids and used vehicles will not be banned.

The next 5-10 years in European car market will be interesting. So far there's not very much hybrids available. Toyota is the leader by now, thanks to offering not only Prius but also "normal" hybrid cars (Yaris, Auris, C-HR, RAV4 etc.) at affordable price, while many other hybrid cars are sporty and way more expensive, and not meant for the ordinary John & Jill anyway. Some manufacturers seem to skip hybrids and go to all-electrics, but the problems of high price and recharging will not be solved very soon.

I'm all right Jack - I already got a hybrid.

There is a plug-in version of the Niro coming in the autumn - but rumour has it that it will cost £6,000 more than my car.  That will make it difficult to sell and will only make economic sense to people who do 25 mile journeys every day giving them 9000 miles per year of pure electric power and no petrol.  For the rest of their mileage the economy will be no better than my car which has a range of about 3 miles on the battery alone.

I'm a bit supprised its not coming from the EU, would have expected them to the first to put it in law. Several countries have goals to stop sales of ICE vehicles.

I bet all electrics are gonna eat the commuter market when the ranges 300km become commonplace and hybrids take the long distance distance drivers(taxi, sales, service etc).

Big problem I see is all the people who tow a lot(carpenters/caravaneers etc), as far as I know there is not yet any EV or PHEV with a hook(or rated for towing).

Watch the price of elecy rise in price.

We have got that already. Been gouged by electricity suppliers (aka companies working for State Governments) for years. This month our power prices went up 20%. Why? Because they can and we cant do without the stuff.

The political justification is all the people with solar panels on their roof have put pressure on other consumers.
Think of the damage these *!!* EV owners are doing to the economy.

Or....... We could be saving the government money as to how much infrastructure they have to build and maintain.  :crazy1:

We got plenty a hydro and nuclear power, and our industry is beeing bought up by foreigners right and left so I dont think power will be our problem, it will be unemployment(well, not for me in healthcare, Id be happy if our demand slacked off).

Payback on solar cells even in my part of sweden is 7-10 years, shame it just corresponds so poorly to when we need poeer the most.

They need to do something serious to the range of the electric vehicles if they want to remove all diesel and petrol. I could do with a ev for my daily commute of 2x25km, but what about all other transport..?

Of course they will improve the technology within the next 20 years, but even a daytrip to visit friends or family will require stops to charge. I don't even want to think about how many days I would need to tow the caravan to The Mediterranean as usual. Hell, maybe caravans are also banned by then...  :undecided:

How do they expect the many carpenters, plumbers etc who use a transporter/Hiace sized car towing a trailer with materials to come around with an ev..?

SOLVED by the political 'thought bubble':  everyone should use bicycles and public transport.  :crazy2:

can't really rely on a full electric car here in Australia Alan or a car with a space saver. that is if you drive out of the city's , some people never drive far and all there driving is in big city's so thats cool. just people that drive long distances in Australia. would need to be good walkers!

for a couple of years, there was an electric car company that had battery changing service all over the country, and charging stations in some car parks along the way.
if you had to change the battery, you just drove through a service center and the battery was replaced  automatically in about 3 minutes. just like a drive through.
all seems good. but they made you use their own unique charger and charged 10 times more for the electricity you used. you had to install the charger at your home, but only if you had a parking place registered under your name, so if you lived in rental apartment/house, you could not buy the car.
if the trip to your work was too long, and your work place did not have its own parking, you could not install a charger at your work.
all the project was ran in a way too greedy way, was closed after about 2 years.
as the cars was Renault Fluence based, the Renault importer that was also part of this project, agreed to buy all the cars back  (because they did not want to keep service parts for another 7 years).
most of the people sold the cars back to Renault, but some kept the cars. I had 2 people in the neighborhood with this car, both kept the car, but after a few months, maybe a year, the cars disappeared.

Wow! And I bet the shareholders lost out big time too.
It sounds like a  great corporate venture, unfortunately planned by an accountant.
Several of my Dutch relatives bought Teslas and one has an Opel hybrid. The government installed power points at their homes free of charge.

They tried that here as well, but it was also very short lived. With only 15 battery change stations across the country, what the (beep) did they expect..?
