Hi All,

First post here, wanting to find out if anyone has had success with the clip on style bike carriers that fit on the rear hatch?

The only factor I can see preventing the use of this style of rack is the rear spoiler.

Not interested in the expense of roof racks or fitting a towbar as in the next 12 months the i30 won't be the primary mover of bikes.

Have had bit of a read of a few topics here but wasn't able to find what I was after.

Cheers Bozzy

I found the body contact points gave the paint a hard time . . .

Someone was posting about this a little while back. Think in the end she (?) decided to go the extra expense of a towbar.
My MTB will fit in the back if I lay the seats flat.

It is a wonder they don't come with a vinyl film to be applied under the clips like they do with headlight covers and stuff on some cars. You could make your own vinyl layer to protect the paint with some heavy duty clear contact cut into small rectangles. Even some headlight protection film or something.

That aside it still set up ok though?

What particular rack did you have?

Yeah 2 bikes fit with the front wheels removed, it's not ideal, but I'd rather continue to do that than fork out $1k+ on either a towbar or roof mounted set up.

Have never removed the front wheels. Just turn handlebars 90 degrees.

Get mine in back with seats down.

No issue of getting paint damage

No good if you need to cart kids as well as bikes though...  :undecided:

I reckon something like this might be the go...  :undecided:

:link: Kingjoe Pro 3- Hatchback & Rear Bike Racks | Yakima

This is the rack we're looking at or the Thule Raceway 991 I think it is. Bit more expensive but locks bikes to racks.

Fitting the bikes in the back is ok..but, even with a sheet/tarp down still end up with interior scratches and what not.

As rustynutz said,  if you need to fit kids in from time to time 👎

I don't know why but on Thule's website, the fit my car link doesn't list the i30 GD as a compatible fitment for the Thule Raceway 991

I emailed Thule and they don't recommend any rear hatch mounted racks for the i30, I've asked why but yet to receive a reply.

I can't see why it wouldn't work, my only concern is the rear spoiler, but it looks pretty solid. Will have to find a dealer with one in stock and go for a look I think.

Yeah I'm thinking the straps pulling down on the spoiler will be the problem :(

update for those interested.

On Friday I called the local Autobarn to check if they had any Yakima hatch mount racks in stock that I could test out.

They had a Kingjoe Pro 3 there, so I shot down after work and fitted it up. Pulled, twisted, yanked and tugged it and was happy that the straps weren't putting any pressure on the rear spoiler.

With my wallet $169 lighter, walked out with the ex display rack, had to buy some top tube adapters which cost us $65. So $230 for a full set up that would have been around $370.

Took it on it's maiden voyage to Daisy Hill, a 90km round trip and can report it passed with flying colours, I used some cut up bike tube to tie bikes to each other and the rack, the entire set up barely moved

So after being told no by Yakima and Thule, I'm pretty chuffed that my stubborn attitude won out in the end, will probably put some felt wraps around the top mounting straps just to make sure the paint is ok, but other than that it's a win all round.
