I just noticed driving tonight that my front left main beam is gone.
I'll jiggle the connections in the daylight tomorrow but if needed, what's the clever solution for replacing the bulb? Any bargain H7s anywhere just now?

Google points to things such as this :link: H7 (499) Car Globes | Replacement Car Light Bulbs | PowerBulbs but I like the Masters $5 option (goodbye Masters :blubber: ).
Any chance these appear at Bunnings or K-Mart at a low price? :whistler:

Edit: This matches the spec. Being an H7, is it guaranteed to fit?

Left  bulb is really difficult to change due the battery. You will need hands of a gynecologist to reach the bulb. I used stick magnet to get the old bulb out and new in.

I've been using long life bulbs. They seem to be only ones that last.

Hi Gonz. Bugger! I just cleaned out our Garage and found about half a dozen spare H7 globes left over from previous upgrades! You could have had a few for nothing if we were on the same island!

Yes, most of us find (or have found in the past) that it is best to remove the light to change the globes. It's only a 10 minute job once you have done it a couple of times.  :victory:

Covered many times, somewhere in our vast post repository :D

In fact, I'm sure we have a video or two somewhere. The search button will be your friend :winker:

Thats a very long way to achieve the goal.

From memory undo the head light bolts (3) and give it a little push and when you feel resistance push down on the back of the headlight to about 45 degrees and it pulls out. There is a little resistance, but in the end you will not scratch anything.

Unless you wish to become proficient in the process, I would advise against using cheap or brighter globes, the diesel eats them.

I used the Phillips economy globes when mine were blowing, did the first one on my troublesome headlight at 86k and it was still going strong when I sold the car.

FYI the thread is here with different options.

Is the FD much different in access to the globes than the GD? I find the hardest thing is to get the globe deep enough into the socket. Access is really good on the GD compared to my previous cars(well, maybe with the exception of old Volvo's).

If you don't want to replace them too often, get one of those surge protectors for the battery for a couple of dollars. I fitted 130+ globes from Philips 22000km ago, and there still burning so the protector must be doing something, before I was replacing Philips standard globes at 7000km intervals.

Sorry Gonz but cheap globes aren't going to last.
Its one of the very few problems with the FD, constantly blowing low beam globes. Can reduce it greatly by using long life globes and cleaning the earth points on the outside of the frame rail while headlight is out.

Turns out when I took it out it was the H1, not the H7. I tried a replacement but it's still not coming up. Could it be anything else like a sudden loss of continuity in the grounding? I would have checked that for myself by now but time is tight and I'm using fog lights alongside parkers to cover for the fact I'm one-eyed right now. Bring on the weekend but tonight's question is: are there individual fuses somewhere for the globes or am I destined to trace voltage and find an obscure lack of grounding somewhere?

The H1 is your main beam (as mentioned in your 1st post) so why would you need to drive around with those on :scared:

Maybe you're using the high beams as your roo detector? Yep, thought so...
