Hi everyone,

I wonder if anyone can help me try to diagnose a technical problem with my 2009 i30 1.4 petrol (manual).

Since last week a very strange issue has started occurring. The car starts fine but then randomly the car will cut out when stationary i.e. at a roundabout, junction etc. The car will restart but it cranks several times before it does and then when it does start, the ESP OFF light shows and the car judders and feels rough. If I pull over and switch off, wait a few minutes and then restart, it starts fine with no lights and no issue until it randomly stops again. It seems to happen at least once every journey.

I took it to a garage last week and diagnostics showed no error codes but got it booked back in to check the idle control valve.

Idle control valve, crank shaft sensor, fuel pipes/filter??

Very grateful for any advice.

Hi, Before I put my vote in I would like to ask 2 questions. What is the idle speed, stationary and is it a manual or automatic? Cheers

@Aye30 , it's manual and interesting question about the idle speed; it doesn't seem to cut out unless I am actually stationary and at idle. If moving with clutch depressed or stationary with revs it doesn't seem to cut out (although could just be coincidental).

Welcome Jamie,

That 1st vote was me. Not much use with this one. I'm more the PR guy around here.

  • the older I get, the faster I was
Looks like the crankshaft position sensor. Had exactly the same symptoms.
Until it gets worse, you will not get a warning code
