Hi all,

Recently had my car back from a repair garage .. (someone smashed into the nearside rear door after joining a roundabout that I hadn’t exited yet) .. and when assessing the repairs I’ve noticed these stones in my off side rear tyre. They appear to be pushing into the tyre where it meets the wheel. Will they cause any damage if left alone? I can’t dig them out as they are really wedged in, would it be worth having someone take the tyre off to remove them? Also, my car occasionally makes a horrible grinding noise when at low speeds that seems to go away if I make a sharp turn, reverse or drive fast. Could this be attributed to the stones? I have heard a stone drop out onto the floor when turning sharply once before which is why I ask.

Well, for one they'll be affecting the balance, so get them removed ASAP !

Surely the repair shop should have removed them as if not there before accident then wedged in from accident or from repair shop holding yard/workshop.


 As you say wedged in may be tyre deflated and on inflation on stoney ground got caught in rim

How much work is that for a garage? That tyre is due to be changed soon anyway (heavily perished at last MOT), is it worth paying for them to remove the stones alone or just swap the whole tyre?

Surely the repair shop should have removed them as if not there before accident then wedged in from accident or from repair shop holding yard/workshop.

I can’t be sure that they weren’t there before, the only reason I mention the garage is because that’s why I was inspecting the tyres.

If you're going to get the tyre changed soon then don't bother with it, otherwise you can jack that wheel up and let some air out until the stones are easily removed with a small flat screwdriver.

How soon would be acceptable? The MOT garage recommended June but if it needs doing then I would prefer to do it now.

Soon is a couple of weeks to me, not a couple of months sooner rather than later would be better, if your not able to flick em out yourself maybe a family member or friend could help you.

I’ll give it a better look tomorrow and if I don’t have any luck then I’ll get that tyre swapped! One less thing to worry about down the road

It's a simple job for someone with access to an air compressor to deflate the tyre and poke them out with a flat bladed screw driver.
But there's a possibility the tyre may not seal properly against the rim afterwards.
You'd need to check for leaks after reinflating.

So,  probably best to replace it now rather than wait.

And I seriously doubt the noise you hear has anything to do with the stones. You should get that looked at.

Hi all, the next date that I could get the tyre swapped would be Friday (all the decent tyres need to be ordered in) .. will this be safe to drive at high speeds for the next three days? TIA

Sounds like something loose to me.

As for driving on the tyre as is. Just remember every revolution the tyre is flexing against the rim and those stones are digging into the rubber further. They look fairly smooth but may not be where you can't see. Or the flexing could cause one to crack and produce a sharp edge. Permanent damage to the rim is possible.

The car should have been looked at pretty thoroughly after the accident though I would have thought so surely they would have picked up on something like that?

I can but it will be easier to take my girlfriend car for the next couple of days and to preserve the spare. I’ve booked in to change the tyre Friday, going to need doing soon anyway so might as well get it out of the way.
