I didn't know this was becoming a common issue. Seems to be a North America only thing? I feel like this is just skewed/normalized data though.

Are there any other articles or anecdotes about this issue?

Been happening for a while.
It seems the Veloster is a major offender.

This article gives a lot more information and graphs by manufacturer and model.

Thanks for the added info surferdude. That is some interesting stuff. It seems that the 2012 Velosters have been recalled for the sunroof issue. It mentions that it's an installation issue. It's also funny that toyota hasn't issued a recall for their scion tc, even though they had the most frequently reported shattering sunroofs.

After poking around in my car, it seems like most of the panes are made from KAC, but the roof glass and rear quarter glass is made from saint gobain sekurit. I wonder if the offending panels are all made from the same company.

It has happened here, I recall a discussion about an i45 a few years back and sure I've heard of Velosters in Oz as well. The numbers are very low compared to USA because our vehicle numbers would be less than a 10th of the USA total I imagine.

@pkmaster  , you would have to be unlucky.  :undecided:

interesting Dazz, I will avoid them from now on.

The i45 was not around very long. Possibly warned by a class action in the US pertaining to i45 crankshafts having poor oil circulation therefore causing piston damage.
Nothing mentioned in Oz but Ive come across 3 in Brisbane with that exact problem.

As usual we digress  :faint:

Quite a few years ago now in evening there was an almighty crash like an explosion on our back deck (covered).
Looked out and the glass topped outdoor table had exploded. Totally destroyed.
Did some research and apparently it wasn't uncommon. Had already made the current affairs programs. Cheap Chinese glass apparently.

But, given the flex in any motor vehicle, I can't understand how anyone could NOT think this was going to happen.
The earlier, partial sunroofs are a completely different thing.
But the whole roof?

I like the extra light and open feel of those moon roofs as they are called, but I didn't opt for the i30 Premium for several reasons. I reckon they make the car hotter (as beerman hinted at), they let in harmful UV rays if open and they have the potential to leak or malfunction if not maintained properly. The risk of breaking just adds to the list for me.

I imagine that it is the same as in NZ. When we were kids we had to gradually get a sun tan during summer. Otherwise we would suffer bad burns. But the sun tan would last for months during winter.
In Queensland the sun isn't all that brutal and you get a "wash-off sun tan" to quote my father talking about his time in the Middle East desert.
