I agree with him on the back yard jobs, if done by a professional though a remap is undetectable and does give all the benefits and goodies of better economy and power
An ECU change/upgrade is only required when going outside the parameters of what can be done with a remap, like when doing major modifications which would obviously void warranty.

I'm with JC. Just buy the thing that does the job up front and avoid the need for faffing about and potential financial disasters down the track.
