Hi All,

Just brought a 2009 I30 Crdi Wagon...... Its a manual and done 233k kms.  So hopefully it will last another 50k or so......

I am in Darwin and they are hard to come by cheaply.

Few little problems I will need to get mechanic to fix up.

Rear Brake lights dont work on the side, the top middle one does.

There is a clunk in Steering.

Two  fault codes, one to do with brake switch and another to do with steering sensor.

Apart from that, there doesnt appear to much wrong with it. Time will tell.

Seller took of roof rack and front led bar.

:welcumwagon: I always say this but I reckon the diesel CW is the pick of the FD series. Best engine + best body.   :goodjob:

Sounds like the brake light switch recall may have been overlooked.  Check with Hyundai, they will be able to tell by your vin.

There are a number of minor things that can cause a steering knock. Not usually an expensive fix.

LOL, Gumtree.  Hope you knocked the price down then .

Do yourself a favour and get some one to take some photos of brakes applied,  the headlights on, no brakes , then nrakes applied. post them up and we'll judge whether normal or not because they don't illuminate as you may think. They're  a little unusual.

For the codes, what are the code numbers?

there is a recall on the brake light switch as far as I know.

The angle sensor, will be interesting to see what that is. It may mean somone has been messing with the column and needs restting or if it's a fault that sensor is integral part of that column assembly.

Knowing teh NT it'll probably work out cheaper to freight a used part from elsewhere.

Clunk in steering is also common.

Could be the plastic coupler, could be external of the column.

How's the turbo? Quiet?

Be vigilant with the oil and filter changes. I do mine evry  10000k, oil and filter. book I think is 15000k or 12 months

Synthetic is recommended and check the specs are suitable ACEA   A3/B4  , likely a gold sticker on the cover with it.

Oh, if it's in good shape and looked after, the motor will outlast most of the car.

I'm puffing around in a 380000K example, seen a few 400000 - 500000K examples for sale with people saying the motor is running fine.

I just did the turbo on this one, Was dead when I got it as a project and still returns sub 5l/100 on the HWY.

Out of curosity, what are the headlights like under those covers? perfect?

Reason I ask is I've long belived that having them with polycarbonate headlights was a waste but noticed on my car how the lenses were still good and not UV affected.

Could be that they actually help cut the UV nad preserve them. common issue with modern cars, yellowing lenses.

So it's manual not Auto as advertised? I was going to ramble on about the weak points of the auot but no need if it's manual.

Yes, I insist on keying up the mix myself when buying the premix from StuporSheep, I certainly don't want the guy reading the 2010 line by mistake! :crazy1:

Thanks all,

I will check paint code in the morning.

Dont know about Turbo, not sure how to check it.

Will get some more pictures up tomorrow.

Drove it a bit more today, found a few more little problems. Mostly common ones.

LCD Display flickers
Wing Mirrors dont fold in, with one actually siliconed up.

Not sure what the codes are. I was reading last service report......

Bummer, good for the forum bad for your wallet. Start new threads in the appropriate sections for each fault. I'm just curious about the colour. If it's 2010 it has to be MAD just looked close to my  steel gray in that light.

There's plenty of wrecks down here

Not sure how the post got into this section..... I mustve made a mistake somewhere.

So car is Sep 2009, so not sure if that makes it a 2009 or 2010 model....

Paint Code is MAD.

Picture is of last mechanical report when getting service.

Not sure how the post got into this section...

Your post morphed from an "intro" into a "problem or issue" so it magically moved :whistler:

OK no problems........

Was going to start a new post, just wanting sure. So all good.... I thought I messed up.

Think the problems I have so far are common enough hopefully.

Do all manuals have cruise control? The one I have does.

Morphing along, no. Cruise control is not normally standard but that wagon is an SX and I don't know what it would be called but looks like a package to get fogs and cruise.

Does it have audio controls on the wheel?

$188 to replace the drive belt. Wow. Do you have any mechanical ability?

No Audio Controls on Steering wheel.

Little mechanically minded. So might look at doing it myself.

Apparently it has a broken wheel stud as well.

Right , off to a roaring start.  So the NT is a little special too I think. Cars up to 5 years have no inspections, after 5 they have 1 and then after 10 every year.

So if the vehicle is current for RWC then a sale is simply a transfer signed over on the rego paper is that correct?

Most of Austraila would require a RWC upon any sale.

Were all these faults known at the time?

Thats right no RWC on vehicle transfer.  Yearly after 10 years.

I noticed steering clunk when test driving. Others over the last few days.

I am  not too concerned. Its a nearly 9 yo car with 235k kms. It was bound to have a few things wrong.

At this stage, they seem to be the common things. So will start sorting them out as I go along.

Yep. The SX had a $400 package from the factory for CC and fogs. It was a great deal, way cheaper than any other model at the time. And the CC worked smoothly and well.

OK thanks. Cruise does seem to work good.....  When I am back at work, its a 50 odd km run each way. Only a few traffic lights and mostly 90 to 100kmh running.

Sounds a little boring but the A/C will be fresh. How's the DSL price up there?

SO for future reference. The drive belt should be
252122A310 or 5PK1811

I found some Bosch belts quite cheap online.

This is the style of tensioner, sits low down and a little cramped. Have a good look. Two things to note.

1. it has a hex head casting. I think 14mm.average sized breaker bar also handy to reach. Pull it back to release the teansion, then

2. Notice it has a hole that lines up when it's all the way back, 1/8 " drill or 3 mm rod inserted and will hold or large split pin.

Now you can work on the belt with ease and refitting it. Before you remove it, take a photo or two. I still get muddled when refitting the correct path.

I posted this link today. A lot of work done in these guides by Steve Roe

$65 to adjust the park brake seems steep too given my mechanic does it as part of a $120 service (I supply oil/parts)

Does the traction control light come on when you apply the brakes, that was a sign of the brake light switch being dodgy too.

So its booked in to local dealer. 120 to diagnose and find out if the steering worm drive needs replacing. About 600 if it does. They will also check out the brake switch, not sure on price for that one yet.

Used first tank    45 litres to do 760kms. So not too bad.

Well its by by to the I30....... A local Army Truck failed to stop and killed it.

On another note our other  i30 Wagon is at local dealer.   2200 to replace steering rack....... They did the cog about 20k kms ago and had made different noise ever since. Managed to get it back to them and said its not the worm drive but the whole rack needs replacing.

Also it pings around 1800 to 2000 rpm. Was told it is injector seals and will cost around 800 dollars to do. No guarantee it will stop pinging....

200 to diagnose........ Here is a nice little fact. They are dearer per hour than local Uluru Mechanic.....
