Hi folks
I was unfortunate enough to have my door mirror 'nudged' by a concrete pillar the other day, while reversing into a very tight spot.
I have no excuse for touching the pillar and it was totally my own fault !
The mirror folded towards the front of the car as it was designed too and luckily everything remained intact except the black surround to the white case was 'unpeeled' so to speak at the outer edge only.
It looks like it must be made in 2 parts (black & white) and also looks like it would pop back into place by applying enough pressure but it doesn't seem to want too ?
I would be very grateful if anyone knows how these units can be dismantled please ?

All the best

Mal

Hi Mal,

Don't you hate it when these concrete pillars jump out and nudge your car!  :crazy1:

Sorry, couldn't resist. :-[

Can you post a photo of the damage please I think it might help with those trying to advise.

trying to find the image, but the mirror clips in from what i hear, pop that out. that should reveal the screws that hold the outer cover and assembly together. Mirror is heated, could be some wires lurking in there too

Hi folks

I've tried plenty of hand pressure but I think the lip of the edge if the black surround is slightly below the edge of the white body of the mirror unit at its far edge.
This makes me think the best way to tackle this is to dismantle the unit, just in case too much force breaks something !
I don't see the 3 images I've just uploaded ?
After uploading 3 images, is there anything else I need to do Dazzler, as I don't see them anywhere ?
Mal

PS there's no additional heating etc. only electric adjustment.
PPS Ive just opened the link TW and if this is more or less the same as mine, it looks like quite a job to pull it apart ?

upload to imgur, then copy past bb code.

I thought you had already decided to pull it apart and why I posted that link?

Many thanks guys for all the information.

Re the images - I dragged and dropped the images last time and this time I searched and uploaded from the desk top.

The results are below ?

Yup, I can see mirror has to come off to get in through the front  -  looks fiddly but Ill have to pay more attention when when reversing near solid concrete pier !

The mirror glass on the 2012 Jetta I repaired had to be pulled off and it turned out so hard that it broke despite all the care taken, but it was the only way to get to the three screws inside.

Hi Folks
Just a quick tip for anyone else that may do what I did and be as 'slack' as I was when reversing !
I tried removing the mirror as described and I'm sure it may have come off, but the amount of force required stopped the operation for me as I really didn't want to break it !
I had a friendly mechanic look at it and he also told me of how many mirrors he seen break during their removal.
He simply took 2 small screwdrivers and carefully pushed the now protruding white edge under the black surround allowing the unit to go back together.
I have to admit he's got hands like shovels and looks like he could crush walnuts between his fingers, so he almost made it look quite easy !
I struggled with for quite a while and got nowhere !
'Horses for courses' as they say.
All the best

Yep - while I closed my eyes  and prayed .... LOL
I guess it says something about the quality of the plastic that it didn't  shatter into a thousand pieces !
