Morning All,

I have recently purchased an i30 SR 2016 model, (and love the car, except for the HORN) I prefer to use the USB to listen to my music. Apart from taking a little while to load (which I'm fine with), it seems that the stereo only reads a certain number of files/tracks. I have a 128GB USB Stick.

What are the limitations with the USB drive in the car? and is there any way around this? I spent quite a bit of time putting all the tracks in artist folders so not sure if this made it worse or not but it's definitely easier to find the artist. I found some old post about this but thought that it may have been fixed by Hyundai since

cheers

I'm not sure but maybe the third level is the problem.
Isuse a 128gb stick but just artist or album names then tracks.
Mine's a 2009 FD.

Hi Drew80

I have a 2016 i30 Sr and use the usb as well but only 16gb and have put all songs by a certain band/artist in the one folder and it will play them all but if there are sub folders in the original it doesn't play what is in all the sub folders only which one it it currently playing from I hope this makes some sense and I have found that when on random play it doesn't seem to play a lot of songs before starting to repeat them sometimes it plays one song and two songs later it will play it again

Firty runs my USBs just fine, although I'm too poor to afford anything bigger than a 16 G. I've seen formatting making a difference, so check using USBs with different formats.

I have hundreds of mp3s on my phone and I just use the bluetooth connection to play them.  USB dosent seem to work weell with too many sub folders on a stick.

Anyone having problems with USB should try this: Make a folder named MUSIC (all capital letters!) into the root of the drive, and then put all your mp3 files and folders into that folder. I have a 16GB stick with over 1500 songs in \MUSIC, having at least two more levels of subfolders under it, and it works without problems. The folders may not come in the most logical order when skipping over them, but all files in the stick are playable.

This trick was posted at here years ago:

I've tried several usb's in mine, the stereo reads and plays the files though at some stage the head unit always crashes (at least once a day), did it in the old unit as well as the new replacement so I've put it down to the standard GD01 stereos are crap :disapp: I stick to playing songs from the phone via bluetooth and never an issue though Bluetooth navigation menus for music are totally non-existent :Pout:

I do recall a very long time ago reading about file allocation table limitations in some storage formats, whereby there's a limit to how many files you can have in the root but not so in folders.

I have used an USB 2.5 inch HDD with a 200gb FAT32 partition without a problem.
It is a samsung disk that needs only 490 milliamps to spin up (just below the 500 mamp that the USB port supplies).

It only takes about 2 minutes to read the file structure..
I use 'drivesort' by Anerty.net to sort the files and directories on the disk.
