Title: Can you add rails to an i30cw FD?
Post by: eXDee on April 21, 2017, 00:08:27
Question as per title. I have a 2009 i30cw / wagon / estate / tourer depending what country you live in. It has no roof rails, and no mount points for bars like the hatch does.
If i want to attach a roof rack, i have to use those ones that clamp the edge of the door frame which works but isn't as clean looking.

If i was to find rails at a wreckers, could i somehow detach the guttering thats used on my current one and replace/modify it to fit the rails? Might sound a bit crazy but thought i'd ask.
I've read a few threads on how they are attached but they just show the bolts. I need to figure out the bit that those bolts would actually attach to.

If not, does anyone know where you can get a cheap door frame mounting kit for this? They are very expensive.
I'm looking for:
-Prorack/Whispbar K413 mount, then S4 or S16 bar
-Thule Fitting mount 1695, then Foot 754 (old 750), then Bar 969, 969200, or 769

Or assuming the American Elantra Touring wagon is the same,
-Thule Fitting mount 1478, then foot 480, then a standard thule bar
-Yakima fitting mount Q99, then foot Q Tower, then standard yakima bars
-Maybe prorack/whispbar k328 but im unsure on this one

Feet and bars are easy to find. The mounts are model specific so not so much.

Most I have seen attached have been done like this...

So what you're showing there is the factory i30cw roof rails, with bars attached. Mine does not have the factory roof rails, nor any gutter mounting points to attach them. This means either finding some and figuring out how to rig em up, or using door clamps.

Surely you still have the black mounting strips flush with the paintwork along the full length of the roof as for all i30s!

That's your starting point for attaching a range of options. :victory:

Keep an eye on Gumtree and eBay, you may find someone selling the whole kit. I set up an alert and managed to find the Thule bars with the right fit kit for $150, and that's for the rare GD wagon. The fit kit alone is $75 if you buy new so it pays to search far and wide for the full setup.

Yes i have the black gutters, but unlike the hatch, they lack the mount points that you can attach horizontal bars directly to. They are simply a long clean black strip. I expect if i was to find some cw rails at a wreckers, i'd either have to have holes drilled into these or replace these gutter strips with the ones from the donor vehicle. Thinking it's probably not that feasible at this point.

I see this is what i'd be after though - if i knew how to mount it, and if they could get it to NZ without it costing an arm and a leg.

I've seen those but the i30cw w/o rails option isnt very common, it needs the door mount brackets and doesn't share this with any other car model, its only the i30cw/elantra touring. Most on that search result are for the hatch or the wagon w/rails.

Cheers. I've been watching trademe which is the NZ equiv of gumtree/ebay, and no luck so far. I don't know if any of those aussie sellers would ship here for cheap but i guess it's worth a look.

Bumpity bump. A wrecker has offered some rails for $70NZD ($65AUD, $37GBP)

I of course have the long black metal strip. What i lack is the bolt holes etc to mount it. To make it really clear, there is no blank holes like the hatch has, nothing. So i'd need to get something drilled.

So, whats on the other side of these bolts and how do you get to them? Do you have to remove all the headliner and any other components from inside? Are they held on by the black metal gutter strip or is there a special mounting as part of the frame that you would need? Welded even!?

I lack a servicing manual in the off chance it has the assembly/replacement info for these. Anyone who has one, can you check for this section?

Wow! That is opening up a real can of worms! Can you contact the wreckers and ask them how they were attached and if it is by some mounting clips see what they will charge for them (may throw them in)

We don't have our 2010 CW anymore to check sorry.

I suspect you would have to drill through the roof though and remove the head ling etc.. So unless you get an easy fix via here or the wrecker, i'd be going with the gutter mounting roof racks instead.  :undecided:

Yeah the wrecker doesn't seem to want to give much detail so I might see if i can find one in my city in person. Or ask the hyundai dealer - long shot but they may know.

I wish i could mount to the gutters. Theres no way of doing that to my knowledge, only clamping into the door frames. Which with some reluctance i'd do, but not at $70AUD+ just for the metal clips, which doesn't include any of the roof rack towers or the cross bar.

Oh sorry, I meant the door frames... I didn't realise that was such an expensive option!

I guess the only other way we are going to find out is if a member with a CW (with roof bars) takes one off and checks what is underneath. So by the look of it some NZ delivered CW's got them.  :undecided: Pretty sure all Aussie delivered ones got them as standard.
