Any turbocharger sound present on your 1.6 CRDi or complete silence expected?

2008 FD 5 Door Hatch, Diesel CRDi, 1.6 CRDi, HP-116PS

Hello all and thanks for welcoming me here.
I got a question - I purchased a very well preserved i30 1.6 CRDi, 2008 build (FD) from a friend.
High power version of 116PS, with 180000km on the clock, taken care of - synthetic oil every 10000km, fuel and air filter at intervals or sooner - not pushed or molested. No DPF.

I do hear the turbo whistle a bit - it is not strong, at all.
No grinding noises, it is actually very pleasant to hear, and is heard at 1000-2000RPM, not in higher RPMs.

Engine hasn't had a litre of oil to be added in between intervals in 180k, no smoke, rattling, or weird noises. Runs perfectly. Friend that owned it isn't keen on mechanics, but says he hasn't noticed any difference in noise from start.

I am a bit paranoid though - do you hear the turbine-charger at all on yours or are they completely silent like lambs?

Sounds like a great buy you have there. No Fast&Furious turbine spin sound effects on mine. I hear pretty much what you're hearing. :goodjob:

I purchased a very well preserved i30 1.6 CRDi, 2008 build (GD) from a friend.
Welcome i30proudowner :)

A 2008 build would be an FD model, GD is the current shape.

 :welcumwagon: and Congratulations.

I agree with The Gonz, from what you describe sounds perfectly normal. The Turbo is slightly audible in certain conditions especially in a car with that mileage. I would only be worrying if it starts to sound like a distant police siren at higher revs...

Mine sounds like a police siren .. could be a sign of needing a replacement turbo. Thereis people on here how have ignored the sound and still got high mileage out of their cars. I'm thinking of changing mine at tax time

I have owned my current GD crdi fom new and have now done 202,000 kms.
There are times when I can hear the "police siren" but it is still in the distance so doesn't worry me.
I do a lot of kms and I do cool my turbo down if I have been on a long run, but I can still hear it at times.
It doesn't concern me.

Hi i30proudowner

 :wttc:

I have one like yours. 9 y/o and now done 266,000 km and have had the turbo whistle/police siren all the time I've had the car. I bought it 6 years ago with 126,000 km on the clock. Never used any engine oil either.

Great buy. Keep calm and enjoy the ride...  :goodjob2:

Being inside and windows closed, I can't hear any turbo sound in my GD (72k on the odo) while driving. From the outside, some faint whizzing can be heard when accelerating.

Thank you all for your feedback. I am keeping calm and enjoying the faint whizz sound.

This looks like a great place to be - seems like you are like a big happy i30 bonded family. Weird what cars can do to people.

Yes, as Dazz once said, we're more like a big happy social club whose members (mostly) happen to own an i30.   :)
I've met some great people through this forum, but Dazz has met more. Including me.

Mine has a definite spool up whistle, I replaced the turbo cartridge about 3 years ago thinking there was a problem but it still did it.
Doesn't use any oil so I'll just keep going.

Good that you are keeping a watch on the oil level.  :goodjob2:
If you ever suspect that the turbo is throwing excess oil into the air intake, take action. It could blow your motor.
