England and Wales - Speeding fines to be increased to up to £2,500

A change in the law from April means speeding motorists could face a fine of up to £2,500 as well as a points penalty or disqualification from driving.

The changes will come into force across England and Wales on April 24.

My son's ex-lady friend had a BMW Z3 sports car.

4 years ago she was travelling from The Isle of Sky to Benson in Oxfordshire and managed to get clocked by speeding cameras 3 times on the one journey. Each time she was well over the speed limits but I cannot recall the exact numbers now.

2 offences were in Scotland and 1 in England and she had to go to Glasgow to appear in court. She went by train - fearing she would lose her license.

She was asked how much she earned a month and had to provide a list of her outgoings.

Bottom line - she was fined a total of £4,800 and had 9 points added to the 3 she already had. However - her job depended on being able to travel (she was a doctor) so they allowed her to keep her license.

If that wasn't bad enough, her insurance premium almost trebled.

It just isn't worth the risk. I had to attend a speed awareness course 3 years ago in lieu of points on my license. I was cynical about it before I went but impressed by the course when I got there. I thought I knew the Highway Code backwards but this was disproved when put to the test. I came away convinced that every young driver should be obliged to attend and it has modified my driving habits to this day.

About time!! here we only need to be caught 30kph over posted limit loose licence on the spot ( NSW ) but this state fair as no hidden mobile speed camera's all have three easy to read speed camera ahead signs up so, only blind people who should not be driving get caught, or people not watching the road. how does your points system work?

Finland does it good if I remember, based on income so it hurts rich as much as poor. Though loosing your license and getting a 2-3 year ban on driving hurts a lot more. I think Norway has average-speed cameras on some road stretches, probably a lot more effective than single point cameras.
Fines are way to low in Sweden(200-400€) but our main problem is the lack of cops to issue fines. So many people driving like immortal nutjobs here, which is a great risk to the health of us mere mortal drivers who stick to the speed limit...

I'm just waiting for the day I see a van do a stupid overtake and go face first into a 65t lorry, I see plenty of cases with less than two seconds marginal every week.

I'm with Lakes, about time.
After 2 months happy touring Europe in my leased Peugeot 308 (with French Government Registration), I went across to Britain.

The Poms were mad drivers, flying past me, honking and abusing me for being French

( that I can understand), but their speeding was ludicrous.

Then the penny dropped. In Britain, the speed limits are signed in MPH. I was driving in KPH.

How was I to know they are still in the dark ages?

All 3 cases were dealt with at Glasgow.

She didn't lose her license but she lost her soon-to-be fiancé. She was a right nutter and he woke up just in time. I do agree she should have lost her license by the way.

I know someone the other day that passed a line of cars (safely) in his powerful 6 cylinder car... and realised as he pulled back in he was doing 160 kph (in a 110 zone)

And a used car was considered a good buy if it had under 100,000 miles on the clock.

When I came to Australia many years ago I bought an Austin 7 car and I had to stick a plastic bit with Km over the Mph speedo .

upgraded after that with a Holden EH station waggon with Km on the speedo.

That was down to Whitlam.
He banned all new measurement instruments that displayed imperial data.
The public were forced to adjust quickly and generally it worked well.
A bit too well for used car dealers tho .... suddenly the public freaked out if a car had done 100,000 km ( a mere 60,000 miles).
