Hi All,

As some of you are aware, an invitation to a couple of group members was offered recently to attend the HMCA dealer launch of the new 2017 i30 at the new Sydney International Convention Centre.
This is just a short quick overview - we'll get into the details in a follwing post.

Trevor (@Surferdude) & I attended yesterday along with Justin from Hy.life forum (Veloster). We were invited by Oliver (HMCA Dir Marketing) & our host for the day was Bill (General Manager External Affairs).
Trevor & Justin were flown by HMCA & being a local I just caught the bus  :undecided:
It was a full on organised gig and aimed at giving the dealer network an overview of the new i30's features, we were put into smaller groups for various sessions. Felt a bit strange being the odd guys out in a sales orientated enviroment.
We had a video team that were allocated a bit of time to take pics/video of us occasionally - we will have the files in a few days when it gets processed & sent.

The day started with an a/v preso in the theatre section, an intro by HCMA CEO Jung Wook Lee & after a short video the cars appeared on stage.
We all had the opprortunity for a short test drive, unfortunately it was only 5 min loop around the Pyrmont area with a 50km/h speed limit. I had a diesel auto active? very pleasnt to drive, very quiet (but then only doing max 50).

The new car is packed with safety & techo features, we were supposed to get a full list but something got missed so I'll start with what I can remember - I'm sure Trevor can add his details.

Some of the of the simple stuff:
Wireless phone charging & an alert if you happen to leave phone in car.
Adaptive Cruise Control
Reminder to take a break after 5? hours - although if car senses erratic driving it will decrease this time.
Lane change assistance
Obstical reversing sensor - if you happen to park in a car park & don't have clear vision when reversing out between 2 large cars, it can alert if any cars/pedestrians are approaching
Lane guidance correction.
GPS in all models.

FYI - an few of my pics here: :link: Hyundai PD2017 - Google Photos

As mentioned, we will be supplied more detail from our host in the coming days.

Looks like a good day :goodjob2: the snacks on the table would have distracted me from the vehicles :) so what are the final decisions on the models and engines we'll be getting here?

I wonder if they added the surfboard just for Trev :workitout:

I've just added a few more pics to the album link above from yesterday, I took them from the slides that were on the screen in our "classes" - some are reasonable & others blurry. You might be able to make out a bit more detail.
The car with the surfboard was just accesoried up to show what was available

Time you ditched that nanny "security" BT software you've got installed - more trouble than it's worth.

He was an excellent presenter, obviously knew his stuff and communicated it well. And threw in just the right amount of humour to keep everyone interested.
He's an obvious asset to Hyundai Australia.

I have about 10 pages of notes.  :crazy1:

However, while I collate these (and try to decipher my shorthand - read "scrawl"), let me contribute a few general thoughts.

When you have a successful product, it is always going to be difficult to top it come time for replacement.

Hyundai seems to have hit a home run with the PD. Billed as "new from the ground up", the PD would seem to meet this description in every way.
New engines, new technology (heaps of it), an even stronger body shell (which incorporates about 1 tonne of Australian iron ore into EACH car), and a rather pleasing-on-the-eye body shape. They have taken the strengths of the FD and GD and just kept adding to them.

The front on view is probably much better in the flesh than in photos, and I'd suggest you wait until you've seen a few of them before you form an opinion. It is a very pleasant car to look at.

One more point comes to mind. I read somewhere some criticism (or at least somewhat negative comment) about the positioning of the touch screen which whilst centre mounted, sits out form the main line of the dash and at least in photos, gives the impression it might intrude in the driver's road vision. It doesn't. In fact, I reckon it's perfectly placed. I made the comment during our test drive and later, when Justin from "Hy.Life" was driving, he agreed with me.

We expect to see more information in the next few days, including pricing etc. As that all filters through I'll add it in here, so keep checking back.

I expect nothing less from him. And yes he is a huge asset to HMCA.
Glad you like the PD, I get my first look on Friday :)

I know I've commented on the touch screen before, wasn't regarding blocking view though as that would be a huge design fault, I was more concerned with how it sticks out from the dash which looks very unappealing to me, another concern of mine would be how long the touch screen is going to last in Australian summers now that it isn't protected underneath the dash :undecided: electronics and sunlight/heat don't mix well.

Any mention of the i30RN?

280kw AWD sounds like the perfect replacement for the FD wagon!

I've earlier commented on the placement of the screen. I don't like the look of it, but when seated in the car it's placed perfect for view and use.

I've read that the lower trim levels won't have the screen at all, very curious as to how the dashboard layout will be then

I remember being skeptical when Hy contacted the forum, that it would only be a PR stunt. Happy to be proven wrong and  :goodjob: to Hyundai Australia for involving the end users.
