Hi All, well everything moving so i need to book a flight to Cairns, anyone used Tiger air as it's been a while since i've flown. but familiar with Qantas & Virgin both tops, Virgin were very helpful last time i booked a cheap flight with them. but i see tiger air the cheapest i'm not worried about meals ( only 3 hour direct flight ). so hope someone here has used them before also how much can you carry on? as i will need to take my helmet & don't want the boys in the baggage knocking it around. any advice much appreciated . also will be using the coast road as friends on the coast & in Bris asked me to come and stay I'm always lost in QLD!! also can you get from Bris to gold coast without using a toll road as i don't have a tag and very hard paying ( getting money out pocket ) when on a MC!! i remember using a motorway up there once that had four toll stops on the one motorway that was an experience never seen that before was ten years back cheers

Not a problem with using a toll rd . No toll booths all done on  line. Just put in the day you are traveling & pay on line, down load the form a few days before you go and allow plenty of time for start and finish time . Go over the gateway Bridge ,Brisbane and follow the signs all the way to the Gold Coast on M1. Easy peasy. Sorry Cant help you with Tiger air , like you  have only ever used Virgin & Qantas.

There have been some horror stories, especially on that TV show they did on it.

Only experience with them is a couple of years ago, my daughter flew down from Darwin and back with them. No troubles. She paid for checked luggage so she could bring back some stuff she didn't need up there.

But, personally I've found Virgin great and these days, Jetstar.
Came back from the Sydney launch of the new i30 on Jetstar. A little less legroom than on the QANTAS flight down but manageable.

Tiger are known for their delays but many still manage to fly with them without any problems, I think their carry on baggage is 7kg

I'm flying Jetstar in June, after saying I would never use them again. Not sure how that happened.  :undecided:
Last few times have been with AirAsia who are OK unless you need to speak to someone.
But I'm afraid I've never flown Tiger.

You'd have to check but Jetstar normally has a price beat policy. Conditions generally the flights need to be within a certain timeframe of each other.

Not brave enough to tempt Tiger even though it's Virgins budget airline.

Tiger got taken over a couple of years ago and is now a division of Virgin in the same way Jetstar is Qantas.

From what I have read they are smashing Jetstar in the on time department.

I believe Tiger had moved on from the 'tv show' days before they were taken over, and have gotten better from there.

Something went wrong in Feb though

https://bitre.gov.au/statistics/aviation/otp_month.aspx

Just follow the luggage rules and if in doubt, ask before you book.

Oh and for those who want to carry on about overly strict carry on rules, think of the poor bloke who abides by the rules then loses his legroom when his backpack is handed to him so that a non compliant suitcase can be put into the overhead locker.  :fum:

I cracked the $hits with Jetstar a few years back and have used Virgin exclusively ever since. I don't think Tiger flies out of northern Tassie, but to be honest I wouldn't take the risk for a few bucks. (Did I just say that out aloud?)

I love Virgin (no edits please) but had a scary experience on my return to Tassie on Tuesday morning (via Virgin)

One of my cases went AWOL! The biggest one with my laptop and other valuables in it!  :sweating: :crazy1:

There was a similar one left unclaimed on the carousel. A very pretty blonde Virgin  :whistler: (employee) called "Maddy" helped sort it out by ringing the owner of the unclaimed case. He had got home and when he checked acknowledged he'd taken my case by mistake. Was an hour before he got back to switch it over. "Ar$hole" wasn't very apologetic either.. Cost me an extra $7 for long term parking as it rolled over an extra day!  :fum:

Lucky Maddy was so sweet!  :P (sorry no photos)

Thanks all, well I'd like to Thank Beerman!!! If Tiger Air part of Virgin, that is good enough for me!!
as when i worked i had to deal a lot with Qantas & Virgin i found Virgin try really hard, Qantas was up there at the top, but i think Paddy, was cost cutting so started to get less people working to do same as before with a lot more so things got a bit less reliable. were Virgin would try really hard the works always on the ball. just what i noticed. i also flew Virgin was very happy. hey ASA i flew United one  bit dicy.
just have to book flight still in checking the bike out via mobile pic's from owner i think she knows more about Harleys now
nice lady! mostly just checking for rust on chrome and checking its as she thinks it is as, she did not do the servicing. won't matter that much as i can sort all that out when i get it to Sydney. just i want a trouble free ride.
JohnB thanks for that info, if i can avoid it i would by pass any toll as i learnt all about that in Sydney, so since being retired i will go out of my way to avoid even though its easier, its just the thought of them removing my money & not me handing it over so i can count every cent!! hope you can understand. ( some times no choice i know but Queensland governments not like NSW Government. in NSW and mobile speed camera except the radars in patrol cars, have two easy to see warning sign's then another beside the speed camera, so if you miss that your blind and should not be driving!! the patrol cars stop you talk to you the give you the ticket, in Queensland they don't have easy to read warning signs so can't be trusted! just how i see it, NSW will rip you off but not without you knowing. revenue raising i know.
but other than that a great place gtoo like all of Australia!!
so can you tell me if it is easy to Dodge the gateway bridge if i'm heading for Indooroopilly or Toowoomba? if you were stopping at both places what one would you head to first?
thanks again.

If you use any GPS and select avoid tolls it's always easy. Can phones be mounted to bikes?

If you headed to Toowoomba first you'll definitely be going inland so no tolls, and then easy to get to indooroopilly via warrego, ipswich  rd, centenary and have no tolls.

watch out for dummy road work lights which are speed cameras(bastards!) They come in all flavours these days and even the vans sometimes have the tailgates up, which can appear to be a normal vehicle.(Bastards)

John, if you have an e tag tthat works in Sydney,  it'll work up here. It's the toll company you're dealing with, not the Qld Government.

Thanks for the pic's tw2005!! will be watching speedo not the road,  Trev i stopped using toll tag's when i left Sydney and have never owned one that could be used with a Motor Bike. i don't need to use toll roads in Sydney as know way around cheaper keeping off them!!
tw2005 i don't use a GPS at all now as last pricey Garmin GPS i owned was good but a useless mount, it kept falling off the windscreen onto me, plus after i retired did not need it, used it when i worked. would not mount a phone on a bike or a GPS but everyone does i don't want distractions. so good old HEMA Maps for me they don't try send you the wrong way!! last trip to Melb i had my useless GPS it sent me the longest way would not take me on there motorway & i could not find it, i did not have any avoid tolls setting set in GPS but it avoided them.
Anyone know if still floods up there or what road condition is after the floods you have had?

I think i'll look for my old ( 5 year unused ) RTA ( old name for Roads traffic authority NSW ) toll tag as think still has $80 credit, but don't know how i would mount it to a MC. so i'll inquire at motor registry might have special ones for MC's now. as i think i'll have to use Gateway , I've used that way in past but i think might have had a toll booth could pay cash at , when i last road up about ten years back.

Gateway is definitely the easiest and best way to go and I have honestly never had a problem paying online for the day I needed a pass, thats if you can't use your tag. No tag needed when you pay just for the day and definitely no toll booths .  :goodjob2:

Have a look at the link I sent you and study the Go Via form, I believe you can put in a certain date and advance  the end date so you are well covered for the travel day. You can also give them a call as they are most helpful if you explain exactly what you want to do. :goodjob2:

Well when i went to travel agent, to book flight & accommodation. she gave me impression Tiger could cancel flights & she would not be held responsible. so i went with Virgin. maybe she got a better commission ? anyway not too worried only takes 3 hours.
i asked MC seller it Cairns has tollways, she said "No just rainforrests & Mountains, Beautiful "
i also struck another problem, as if i prebook toll road pass, bike will have QLD rego with QLD numberplate & i have NSW addy, plan is for me to get blue slip & put new rego on bike post her plate back to her, so she can get refund on what rego left. so do you think toll company will take QLD number plate with NSW addy when i pre book road use on gateway?
also is it possible to go from coast to Toowoomba without using Gateway?

John, have a play around with this. RACQ Trip Planner.
You can add via points.
It'll give you a map and full directions.
I used it to plan our route options to Darwin with my daughter.
You can either print out what you want or save to the memory on your tablet/ laptop.

You are a funny guy John (but I like you!)

Tollways in Cairns...

I don't think there will be an issue having different rego than home address. It must happen all the time. Even rental cars are sometimes registered in a different State than where they are being used in....

I tried to post this earlier, but Dazz somehow bumped me with one of his.
If you come off the highway just prior to Brisbane's Gateway Bridge and take the Story Bridge you can pick up the highway south, to the Gold Coast & NSW,  within a few Ks. A bit slower through the city but it is a main route used by people who hate tolls and the toll road operator that often fines the wrong road users.
This entire route has no Queensland tolls.

If you do want to pay tolls, just pay on-line when you are back in NSW. Takes 24 hrs for your recorded rego to be on the web site.
