Hi all

Purchased a brand new 16 active x and noticed rust along the exhaust system other components, is this normal for a new car?. I really feel cheated or am I over reacting?... any opinions will be appreciated.

cheers

I have had very many cars during my 70 odd years but only ever three BRAND new cars.

It has never crossed my mind to lie down and look underneath them, nor ask someone if I could use their four post ramp for the same purpose.  Must be an Ozzie thing  :faint:

However I will not allow my lack of knowledge prevent me from offering an opinion:-

Since the car was manufactured I presume it will have some time on the dockside breathing in all that lovely salty sea breeze, then and unknown length of time onboard a ship, with lots os salty breeze, then a further period at the dockside awaiting collection once more benefiting from lovely salty sea breeze.

Therefor, I would be astonished of there weren't a few spits and spats of rusty coloured spot here and there underneath the car.

However, as I have said, I know nothing, so hang on whilst the clevererere lads wake up and they'll give you a more reasoned opinion  :victory: :victory: :victory: :victory:

Only one thing I see unusual there, the exhaust is or should be stainless steel except for the base of the flex pipe which is cast iron where it joins the catalytic converter so the dark brown colour is normal, the area I have circled below looks strange...is there any flaking?

Try to brush some of it away and see what happens, it may just be staining or road grime but if there is actual rust flakes then Hyundai may need to look at it.

Welcome   :i30:
What did you notice to get you rolling around and finding this?
Bought mine early December 2016, 9/16 build from Parramatta and it was unmarked and spotless underneath.

Yes,  it must be an Aussie habit, new or used straight to my mechanic and up they go as part of overall check and I do like to have a squizz just to see how things are
layed out .

:welcum: Initially, my thoughts were in line with Asa's (for the same reasons - a few years) However, the section that Craig has circled does look suspect to say the least and it seems odd that in the same circumstances Mick's car was pristine underneath. ..

Thanks for the welcomes and input

hehe might be an ozzie thing or just me:P... was initially trying to workout where an annoying rattle was coming from - I think I read on this forum it might be a loose muffler/exhaust bracket... turned out to be the folding seat latches which is no big deal

first thing I did was check another car for comparison and seemed to be in perfect condition - I guess you got a good one mickd:P

that part in circled red is definitely the worst - bit disappointed but ill see what happens with the dealership

another car I had a look at

tizbiz doesn't show a location,
Might be an earlier build, long trip on a truck with the front angled up then parked till sold? ??  No idea,
Definitely a trip back to dealership, hoist it up, more pictures.
As Craig indicated, a suspect area for sure.
I'd be sending Hyundai Australia pictures with one of vin info regardless of dealers opinion and promises. Its your hard earned money.

I'm in Sydney... the car was a November 2016 build so pretty new. The car had 75 km on the odometer it seemed a bit high, cause of testing apparently?? My previous car had 8 km when collected... who knows what they gave me

I wouldn't worry about that mileage. They may have been cheeky enough to take a couple of potential buyers for a spin. They shouldn't have done in a pre sold car, but it happens from time to time.  :undecided:

Absolutely.
It should be under 10 kms.
I've seen dealers do it. They throw a set of dealer plates on to a new car and use it as a demo.
I don't see any other reason for 75 kms other than it's done a few test drives.
A bit cheeky.
I specifically told my dealer not to use my car for demos when it arrived, as mine had to be ordered from Korea.

Ours had about 15 on it, knew before we said "we'll take it " used for a couple of test drives by Parramatta Hyundai  on Parramatta rd, usally bumper to bumper,  50 km zone.

tizbiz
Do you wish to narrow your location a bit more, ? Sydney  covers a large area.
Your dealers name  was ? , or not mentioning till you've been back?

I'll give them a chance to sort it out first, tgey initially said it's surface rust similar to what brakes have, but someone from hyundai is going to have a look at it also, to there credit they do seem to be taking it seriously ....

Does anyone have a single click noise when releasing the brake pedal even just in park or creaking brakes at low speeds in  start stop traffic, it has been wet lately ...

Other than all this not a bad lil car pretty smooth , comfort steering is sweet

Its a hang over from lying in the trenches for King and Country.

Strangely , I wander around under many i30s, even on ones with high mileage, the exhaust will be in good condition.
This exhaust appears to have been exposed to salt or acid. The corrosion on the hanger is quite deep and old.
I would have suggested that it was damaged before it was put on the car if not for the rust marks on the drive shaft (coincidentally, also on the right side).
Good luck with the dealer.

HI, I had a look under mine, there is a little bit of rust on the exhaust, it's a April build, and it came up from Sydney to Brisbane, but nowhere as bad as yours.

bris vegas or mickd  did you notice the speedometer being inaccurate on your car? mine felt a bit off so I tested with iPhone app and when travelling 60 the app was showing 55 / 56 just hoping it doesn't get even worse at higher speeds

That's normal.

I don't look at my speedo anymore. I've fitted my GPS in a permanent yet reversible position in the top pocket above the radio screen and it always gives me, well, GPS-grade accuracy as well as overspeed audio alerts. :victory:

Hi,
One of our Australian standards is that the speedo must show at least 5% more at 100km/h.
100km/h shows as 105km/h , oh I'm speeding -I'll back off  to 100km/h, good safe driving.
Most design the error early and to stay constant till the speed limiter kicks in.
Most would remember when car testers used to connect a 5th wheel, like bicycle wheel,to the rear of the car to obtain true speed readings for top speed and 1/4 mile , 400m strip times.
Nowadays, crash star ratings and apple /android function seems to the main selling points.

Just to update you... they approved for a new replacement exhaust from cat back excluding muffler - I'm just worried they'll stuff something up while doing it
 :spitty:
cheers for the speedo info - seems common
