Title: Weird Vibration
Post by: nsphelt on December 15, 2008, 00:44:17
I've had my car for a couple of weeks now and I've noticed a strange vibration which has gotten progressively worse.

While accelerating in 4th gear between 60km/h and 70km/h the car shudders a bit. It is particularly noticeable through the gear stick. It always happens in the 10km/h range between 60 and 70.

I've noticed it starting to happen at lower speeds in 3rd gear now as well, but it doesn't happen for as long as it does when in 4th gear.

Anybody else experience anything like this, or know what it could be? I've got my 1000km service coming up quite soon, so I'll be sure to mention it.

I havent come across that with mine.
Shuddering quite badly in reverse uphill though (its still doing it despite having the clutch replaced under warranty)

I'd take it up with the dealer as soon as you could.

do you have a diesel or a petrol?
if you have a diesel you could be slightly underrevved and that isn't recommended try getting there in 2nd gear just to see if it happens again

Yeah, it's a diesel. It doesn't happen if I get up to 70 in 3rd. But it also doesn't happen at 60 or below in 4th until you get down to the point where it's obviously to high a gear for the speed. And you obviously want to sit in 4th while traveling at 60km/h. But I can't seem to move from 60 up to 70 without having this problem, unless I accelerate very gradually.

I've even noticed it doing it when not accelerating - if I'm coasting down a hill in 4th. If the car is slowly speeding up while rolling down a hill (no throttle), it will start to shudder once it gets to about 62km/h.

Hi Cam, i have seen you post about the shudder in reverse uphill before, i'm wondering why you need to reverse uphill? like if i had that problem i would reverse down the hill so i can drive back forward uphill.
i have not experienced the shudder in reverse uphill but must say i have not tried reversing uphill. have you tried to put it in reverse  with the handbrake on ease clutch out not useing throtle then when the motor starts to push it in reverse let handbrake off and let it go up without useing the throtle yourself let the ECU use the fly by wire to speed motor up. as i have said b4 i sometimes have to drive large diesel trucks, sometimes if you put a diesel under load and you have a large load on them they can shudder, also if you ride the clutch on some truck's useing revs they can shudder. one truck i was driving with a really heavy load, if i took a corner and had it in too higher gear then put my foot down it would start doing a shuddery jump jump jump ( hard to explain ) but i take foot off throtle shift back a gear and she is ok. have not had this happen with i30 as i don't carry loads, but eye called it a flat spot, and i said its more like small tit's :D well it's like that with the truck if you labour them underload only much more violent with a big diesel that has a big load ( could probably break the crank?
hope this helps, let me know if it works.
good luck

Sorry if i hijacked the post m8, can't say i notice a vibration with mine its a very smooth motor and the car rolls very smoothly on a smooth road surface. get your delers service team to test it.

When I first got my diesel I found that I couldn't go into 5th until I'd reach 40 MPH (50KPH) otherwise the car laboured/shuddered. (In my previous car I was in 5th at 25).

So could this be your problem as you are trying to drive in a high gear at lower speed?

Fergie used to go hunting1 at low revs/high gear until I fit my tuningbox.

1 as in hunting for air

Thanks for the suggestions lakes. I've tried what you mentioned but it doesnt seem to make any difference.
My driveway is quite steep. See this pic.

I will quite happily reverse down and drive up, that doesnt bother me, but even if I'm in an estate (there are quite a few new ones built around/on hills in Gerrigong and Shellharbour) it will shudder reversing. I could be parked downhill for instance, someones parked a bit close to me in front and I need to reverse back a bit, it jerks/shudders and even feels like something is slipping. Something isnt quite right still.

To test it, we got another i30 from the dealership. It was a brand new demo model, manual with only 130km's.
We brought this home and drove up exactly the same way I usually would in mine, and it didnt shudder at all. The mechanic who came with us even agreed that it wasnt normal.
After they replaced the clutch it was a little bit better and didnt shudder for probably a week, then it came back again. I'll get it sorted eventually hopefully...lol

And now back to nsphelts problem

Cam it does indeed sound like you have a problem, did they just change the clutch only? and not change the pressure plate?

Lakes is right, It doesn't sound good at all.
Make sure you take a firm stance with your dealer and demand its fixed once and for all, and before Jan 11, don't want to miss the blue mountain trip do we.

From what the dealer told me, they replaced everything.
However something they did mention about a week after it was done, was that they machined the flywheel.
With the car only having 1300kms on it at the time, shouldnt they have replaced the flywheel?

I dont know too much about it, but Im just going off what I've read and discussed with family.

Errmm, the 'firewall' is the main 'bulkhead' that separates the internal cabin from the engine bay. If someone had to machine that, then I would seriously ask for a new vehicle! (It's part of the structural body)

I think you mean they machined the bell housing? (Part that covers the clutch plate area)

Fergie used to go hunting1 at low revs/high gear until I fit my tuningbox.

Likewise, no issues in 5th all the way down to 1,000rpm for me, now.

I think the word he was looking for is "flywheel". They may have machined the flywheel to take off any high spots so the clutch can take up cleanly.

Yes flywheel...
Sorry...lol!

Its been a long day.
I had an 18 page theory test based on microsoft and ccna tests. I have firewalls in my brain
