Title: Oil Pressure Light coming on when revs low
Post by: KirstE on February 24, 2020, 10:20:11
Morning all,
This is my first post on the forum as I am fairly new to the i30 owners club. I bought my i30 last June and haven't had any problems with it at all until a week ago. The red oil pressure light flashed on and off intermittently as I got to work last Tuesday morning. I got the AA out and they checked over the car. They confirmed oil and water levels were fine, and that the engine was running without any strange noises so didn't think it was a pressure issue. They also connected it up to their iPad but didn't get any errors. They reset the warning light by hitting the start/stop button 3 times. The light continued coming on the next couple of days, but only on the way to work. I then did the same process as the AA to clear the light, so it didn't come on again at night but would come on again after I had done 20 or so miles the next morning. I took it to my local car garage on Friday and they replaced the oil and filter and did an engine flush. All looked fine on the way home from the garage (but that was only a few miles). As I got to work this morning, the light started coming on again when my revs dropped below 1000 rpm. It goes off again as soon as I accelerate. I've got it booked into the local garage again tomorrow. My nearest Hyundai garage can't fit me until 20th March, which is not ideal if my own garage can't fix it. I just wondered if anyone had experienced anything similar with their I30? Its only a 3 year old car and has just over 16000 miles on the clock, so it's a bit strange that it's having this kind of issue already. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks  :)

Kirsty

Welcome Kirsty,

Sorry to hear of your problem. I assume you have 5 years warranty on that model in the UK. That is crazy that Hyundai can't fit you in for nearly a month. You shouldn't have to be paying a regular garage to fix a potential warranty issue. The 1.6 Petrol engine is generally a good reliable unit. Haven't heard of this issue that I can recall.

Let's see what others have to say.

Either a faulty pressure sensor or oil pump. Warranty should cover it.
Go to dealer and be a little demanding about problem, if they won't change date ask for a written statement saying that car is good to drive and if engine seizes it will be fixed under warranty.  Name, date & signature.
See how that goes .

Unless someone can pinpoint the fault I would not be driving it if wty is at play here. I don't understand the logic behind an oil  / filter change unless there was evidence of dilution.

Smarter option would be to measure th oil pressure and check against spec. If the pressure was correct then oil pressure switch would be suspect.

Thanks for the replies both. I will make sure the garage check the oil pressure tomorrow, and note that the switch may be the issue if pressure checks out ok. I totally get what you're saying about not driving it until fault has been pinpointed, but unfortunately it's my only method of transport so I can't get anywhere without it. If I can't get Hyundai to look at it for another 3 weeks or so, there is no way I could be without my car for that long. :-( Fingers crossed something comes to light when the garage check it properly tomorrow. It does have a 5 year warranty, so it's frustrating at the moment that I can't get it into the local dealers sooner.

Thanks mickd, I will try that. I'm not great at the being demanding thing lol, but I will definitely be asking for a written statement if they say they can't fit me in sooner.

Mick and tw are giving you sound advice. I find 80% of my seized motors have been in cars who were used while warning light was on.  :crazy1:

I would have thought that AA would have checked live data and oil pressure.

Good chance that the sensor is faulty, although not common fault on the i30 ( I haven't seen it  :undecided: :whistler:)

Get it checked asap.

Dont wait for HY, if you ignore the warning and damage the motor, warranty may be void.

I'm not great at the being demanding thing lol,

I can relate to that. I'm not aggressive by nature.. Maybe you'll have to go the other way and turn on the waterworks.. (I'm not being sexist) Whatever works I reckon..  :winker:

At our house my wife is the gruff one and I'm generally Mr Tactful.. So we often play good Cop, bad Cop in situations like this..

By demanding I mean, standing up for your rights.
Go for it !! , feels great later

Either a faulty pressure sensor or oil pump. Warranty should cover it.

Kirsty,  As stated It's likely to be one of these two. If you are lucky its a sensor and no harm is being done, but if it is the pump you are risking major damage to the engine driving it around and may well have warranty issues.

Is the dealer Parks East Kilbride? I just tried booking a service online and they can accommodate me on Thursday and Friday this week so they aren't that busy. be more assertive.

if they still wont book you in ring Hyundai Customer Services 0800 981 981 and ask for help.

Morning All,
Sorry for not being back on sooner, too much stuff going on.

The car is now fixed.  :D I would obviously not have risked driving it if there was any danger of it being a mechanical issue. I got the AA out as soon as the light came on the first time, and they checked it out and assured me it was more likely to be electrical or sensor related. I also got it the car into the garage the day after it came on again, as I wanted to make sure there was nothing that would cause any further damage by me driving it.

It turns out it was the sensor. When the garage took it off to check the oil pressure, they found the sensor itself was full of oil. So long story short, they replaced the sensor and checked all seals etc were ok, and all now working fine.

Thanks for all your wise words of advice.
