Title: Car won't turn over
Post by: roxers on March 18, 2020, 15:33:11
Hi. Got an i30 1.6 CRDi Blue Drive a fortnight ago and having intermittent starting problem. Dash lights all seem correct when turn key to first position (including the immobiliser 'key inside a car' light - solid not flashing) but when I turn to the position to crank the engine nothing happens. Fan/radio go off but all dashboard lights remain on.  Same with spare key.  It appears (though yet to confirm absolutely) that getting out of the car, locking, waiting 30 seconds then getting back in causes it to start. Doesn't work if just lock/unlock car from inside.  First thought was immobiliser but not so sure now. Seems to be happening more often now but will still sometimes start ok. Can anyone help - is this a known issue? Thanks.

I know nothing, but, have you tried disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes.  This will force the ECU to reboot.

Just a thought  :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:

good luck

Welcome roxers,

Could be as simple as a weak battery. The diesels do need a good kick to start. The heavy duty batteries that come standard with the CRDi often last as long as 7 years but if it is the original your would be at least 4 years old and the UK climate is hard on batteries. I'd test the resting viltage if you have the necessary equipment and try giving it a top up with the appropriate charger. Some places offer a free battery check but make sure they are genuine and not just trying to make a sale.

Warranty ?

Thanks for all your thoughts - much appreciated.  I'm away from home at the moment but will certainly try a battery charge and (in that process) the 20 minute battery disconnection.  The car is low mileage so quite probably lots of short journeys in it's life which wouldn't help the battery life of course. But when the car does turn over it sounds 'normal' and fires immediately which made me think the battery was OK.

There is still 9 months left on the Hyundai warranty but had got the impression that very few things that are covered for the full 5 years but I'll check.

I'm getting the impression from the web that the immobiliser may be a red herring - people seem to be saying that the car would turn over but not fire if the immobiliser was preventing starting. Mine doesn't turn over. Does anyone know precisely how the immobiliser works?

Great forum!  Really helpful feedback - thanks.

Are all leads and connectors fully home and not slightly loose?

A jump start from another battery would be a good test. Take the leads off yours and check for corrosion under the connectors.

I feel VERY silly but relieved!!  Had tried charging battery and it didn't seem to drop voltage when I tried to turn it over .... then discovered that pressing the clutch made it start!  That was the one section of the manual that I hadn't read - coz, let's face it, we all know how to start a car!  I thought I was always in the habit of depressing the clutch in my cars before cranking but obviously I don't always do that hence the intermittent starting problem. Never had a car that prevented you starting if you don't do it though.  Be useful if the handbook highlighted that fact a bit more .... and users like myself read it all.  Sorry to waste your time with all your helpful suggestions ... very embarassed!

Hyundai have been doing this for a long time. Our 2006 Getz was our first Hyundai and I remember having to get used to that system.

My 2013 Corolla does it.
I remember about 2006 my daughter was staying in a share house in Brisbane and one of the other tenants had an old Hyundai, maybe a Sonata? 90s model.
He was parked behind her under the house and left her his keys to move his car when he was at work.
She rang me because it wouldn't start.
After trying various things, it occurred to me to  ask if she was pushing the clutch pedal down.
No.

Problem solved.
