Title: Engine clattering/clunking at certain revs and (maybe) under load.
Post by: fnoeh on March 22, 2020, 23:07:57
Hi all! Greetings from Denmark :happydance:

Just joined the forum this night and looking forward to meeting y'all!  :crazy2:
I was hoping for some help to clarify an issue which has occured and worsened over the last two weeks.

My 2010 1.6 CRDi 90HP started to utter a loud dry metalic clattering noise between 1400-1600 rpm (at every 2. stroke). For a start, it was only when the clutch was half engaged and the car under load, but now it's in all gears under load and in the ranges 1400-1600 rpm and around 1800-1900 rpm. At the time it is very noticeable when cruising at 50 km/h in 4th and 70 km/h in 5th (with "cruising load" if that makes sense :D), where the sound is constant.

This sound creeps me out  :scared: and no "clunking" or "clanking" google search has seemed relatable yet, so I'm basically clueless about what to search for or how to diagnose it (mainly because I can only provoke the sound with the vehicle in motion)

Any ideas appreciated!

Hi mate,

How many kms?

Assume from what you say, the engine is (diesel) quiet when idling or revved in neutral.???????????? No sign of timing chain rattle?

From your further info, it seems to be gearbox related, info is a bit thin so I rely on my crystal ball that is saying gearbox input bearing, or clutch pressure plate and/or clutch throw out bearing. However,......

"...start, it was only when the clutch was half engaged and the car under load" Was the car moving? If so you may have a dud CV joint. Does the noise change when  you turn left or right? ( a Good indicator).

The noise description sounds like an exhaust shield that's come loose ,.  Could just be a coincidence that the specific rpms cause the necessary resonance to vibrate the sheild

:goodjob2: fair call. unfortunately the OP seems to have lost interest. Cheers.

Lots of distractions for everyone at the moment so I think I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.. but I will tag them so they can look at the replies..
