Title: i30 FD 2010 - Lost 4th gear
Post by: Nagel on May 30, 2020, 02:36:34
Hi I have an 2010 i30 FD 2.0 w. automatic 4 speed gearbox. Yesterday the car started "jerking" and it will no longer go into 4th gear. Every now and then it jerks trying to go into 4th gear. Manually putting it in 3rd gear seems to fix it. Been reading up a little and it seems like gearbox issues is pretty common with the i30 FD.

I'm the second owner of this car and I had a look at the previous owner service/repair papers that came with the car and in Dec 2015 at ~61000 km the car had issues changing gears smoothly and it says "Auto trans valve body internal failure" and they replaced "BODY ASSY-ATA VALVE" all up ~$2900 job.

My car has now done 150000 km. Is it likely to be the same problem now again, valve body failure again after only 5.5 years and ~90000 new km?

No not "common with the i30 FD".  Like you have just done, owners only comment when they are having trouble. The other 99% never tune in.

The valve body would be the main but, still rare failure, Check fluid level first. Also external sensors and their plugs.

Incidentally, I have an FD auto with 254,000 km on the clock. Books show the auto to be all original.

Yep thats a fair point.  I guess it is the same as people leaving reviews on products. Most people only leave review if they had bad experience.

Anyways, Today I had use the car for a short drive and now it would go in to 4th gear again.
Checked the fluid level once warm and idle as per dip stick instruction and its fine. Light brown coloured. Not sure how to check sensors and their plugs so I think I'll have to book it in for diagnostics. Never taken a car to mechanics before for diagnostics. I have been doing the regular servicing and other minor repairs myself and have not really had any major problems until now. But this might be out of my league. What can I be expected to pay for diagnostics at dealerships/mechanics? On that invoice when the body valve was replaced it says ~$860 for diagnostics which seems pretty steep to me? I wonder if that might have included labour for changing out the parts too.

It is long weekend here in WA so no one that can look at it today and tomorrow. Hopefully I make it back home (about 1 hour drives). Pretty scary when it starts jerking/slipping out of gear when you are driving!   :scared:

Here just reading the codes costs something like 20-50€. But if they start doing real diagnosis and testing the system, it will probably go with their hour rate, whatever it is. Here the dealer price is about 130€/hour. Independent mechanics about 80€/hour.

That $860 is bloody rude.  :spitty: Sounds like a dealer.

Hopefully, there are codes to be found. Talk to a private garage who can give you a fair price on VB and electronic check , they will probably do a scan for free.

Also last time I was at Supercheap they were reading codes for free and then charged $40 to clear them. Depending on the codes you can leave clearing until job is done.

Good luck. I await.

Ok so took my car to a Hyundai dealership today to get my airbag reprogrammed and some wiring harness changed over due to recall. (Free of charge)

Asked them to diagnose my issues ($155 for diagnostics) and also to get a quote for fixing my AC leak.

So seems like the Body valve is fine. Error codes that came back were for the gear ratio speed sensors that would cost - $681
They also found some knocking sound in the steering when doing hard right turn, Steering collum i think they said? - $450
And my AC high pressure hose + regas $565
I asked about changing ATF too as its been almost 90000km since the body valve change. But they said they tested the fluid and it was fine - no need to change.

Does it sound reasonable to you guys? The $155 diagnostics fee will be deductible if If I go ahead with it

Think I might have an early night... Before Gary sees this...  :whistler:

Those prices dont sound like they are doing you any favours to me. The refund of the "steep" diagnostic fee has you over a barrel a bit.  :undecided:

The saving by employing and independent workshop will compensate.

Speed sensors are a simple device, they cost between $50 -$150 and so simple you can do the job yourself.  :link: How to Replace Input Speed Sensor 01-07 Hyundai Elantra - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7E5cUDeAoY)

My crystal ball says the steering Knock is this $10 bush :  :link: Hyundai FD I30 Power Steering Bush / Coupling 2007-2012 *New* (https://www.autopartssupply.com.au/hyundai-fd-i30-power-steering-bush-coupling-2007-2?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIv4K7iYjk6QIVUaaWCh3Ogg-WEAYYAiABEgJjRvD_BwE)

It is a 2.5 hr / $240 job to replace it.

Cant advise on the AC leak. Often, if it is a slow leak, it is just an 'O' ring seal.

This is not rocket science, if a dealership can do it, any experienced mechanic will eat it, and be honest and cheaper.

I ended up having the 2 sensors replaced by Hyundai and cleared the error codes and said everything was fine. (went ahead with it to not loose the 155 diagnostic fee and it was stressing the shit out of me...) Picked up car yesterday drove to work and back no jolting. Today the car jolted once on my way to work.

Rang them up and going to bring it back next week, but now they want the car a couple of days. The guy in charge of the repair sounded surprised as the body valve already had been replaced before.

I can see how you would feel that way... I was the easier option for sure... Time will tell if it was the right one.  :sweating:

Car has been back to Hyundai now but they could not find any faults, I agreed they could keep it for another day so one of their "technicians" could drive it home and back next day for a longer test. It did jolt/slipped gear once for them once it was hot so they checked fluids again (all good) and no new error codes.

Person in charge at dealership said since the valve body have already been replaced about 90k km ago and transmission fluid is good they cant do much more unless some error code come up (Or if they start pulling the gearbox apart but that will cost a fortune). So if the jolting start getting more frequent I'll bring it back and if any error codes relating to valve body comes up they will contact Hyundai and see if they could take the cost of a new valve body and possible labour (Unlikely...)

Otherwise I guess Ill keep driving with the occasional jolt/gear slip until it completely dies! (Time to get roadside assistance just in case :sweating:)

I also bought myself a cheap OBD2 Bluetooth adapter so I can monitor if any error codes pop up myself.

This may not be of any help but I once owned a Mitsubishi shogun that had similar problems with the auto box. I had it tested and the mechanic couldn't find anything wrong. I had the ATF changed and the gearbox filter cleaned but it still had the same problems. I was told I would need a new auto box.
After searching for a solution I stumbled across story about somebody having electrical problems with their car and they sprayed the contacts with wd40 and it resolved the problem.
I gave it a go, I removed the sensor cap and just gave the contacts a light spray and suddenly all the gear change issues went way.

Thank you for that. It may not help, but certainly worth a try.  :goodjob2: :goodjob:
