My previous best distance from fill-up to the fuel warning light coming on was 1184.2 ks.  (Oct 2011)  Actually, on checking my notes just now I see/remember that the light had not come on at that point, but that's when I stopped to put some fuel in.

On 4 Jan 2013 I filled up, putting 55.141 litres in.  When I filled up I had done 40 ks after the light came on.  The 55.141 litres did not bring the fuel to the point where I could see it after the froth died down, so I don't know how much more I could have got in.

I have now done 1,169 ks and the needle is just to the left of the 1/4 mark.  Three country trips, totalling about 750 ks, the rest is Melbourne driving.  On the country trips I coasted downhill as much as I could; yesterday I coasted 8 ks in one section.

Some of the coasting I have done was a bit extreme, and I am sure that sitting below the speed limit on the highway must annoy other drivers and could even be a safety issue.  On 110 speed limit highways I probably averaged 80 to 90 kph.

It looks like I should be able to get a bit over 1200 ks before the light comes on.  I will let you know.

Nice work..

Though those sitting behind you 30 clicks under the speed limit may be less inclined to acknowledge your feat.

Personally despite the lovely ambiance of the I30's interior, I would rather just get there!

If I am not in a hurry to get somewhere, I am happy to go under the speed limit, but next time I fill up I might try sitting on, say, 100 ks on the freeway/highway and see what that produces over a tank full.

I have read the post that talks about the merits (or otherwise) of coasting.  I started doing it only recently.

On one of the country trips I had the left mirror folded in for much of the distance!  I won't be doing that all the time.  Didn't do it yesterday.

When I get new tyres in 5000 ks or so, to lose some weight I might ditch the spare, which I have never needed to use; but I guess if I do that I will find that I do need it.  The jack that comes with the car is pretty questionable, anyway.

Will check out the various 'eco' tyres when it's time for new ones.

For the other drivers who are p****d off with my lack of speed, maybe I should get a large sticker saying 'economy run' for the back window.  I am old enough to vaguely remember cars having 'running in' on their back windows after a rebuilt/exchange motor.

If you can remember that, then your'e entitled to drive that slow by virtue of age, like me

I'm with you, mate. I find running in 5th between 75 and 80 is the sweet spot. Here's my idea:

I'm 'only' 55 and I am a bit embarrassed to be going that slow.  On my bike I go a bit faster (on the highway; with my non-existent bike skills I am hopeless on corners).

You must learn to zero it when you refuel.

I did not expect to get those ks.  I put $20 of fuel in after that, so I am not ready yet to give it another go.  When I psych myself up for another attempt, I will fill it until I can see the fuel, but I had better do that at night when no one will be waiting behind me.

Why aren't you watching the tennis???

It would be interesting to see what ks one could get out of a tank with purely city driving.  If you somehow avoided freeways, or if you lived in a country town, you would never be doing 90 - 100 - 110 ks (not that I did much of those speeds in the 1323 ks).  Only 'problem' for economy would be starting off from the lights all the time.  I do that pretty slowly.  I think there are a lot of impatient drivers behind me, driving away from the lights.

And I have worked out the zero-ing of the trip meter.  But after I do that, the trip meter does not show the distance until I turn the engine off (and possibly even remove the key; can't remember).

i was once thinking of removing the spare. but i know from experience. it is better to have it & not need it, than to need it & not have it. i think any gain with or without a spare would be very small & take a lot of k's to show up.
if you realy wanted to see a gain you could remove the air conditioner most race cars if not all don't have it fitted, i would expect that to show more gain.
if you could find light weight wheels tyres that could also help.
just depends to what extreams you want to go too. in your quest.

If your in Qld at the moment, you could get the record on that $20.

Attach a sail and you'll be off, at regular road speed too.....

Down to the coast and back.....I've done my 130km in it thanks.... :scared:

Didn't attach a sail as I don't believe in coasting.....Though the car did cop a couple of nice gusts side on....

I'd hate to drive a Nissan Tiida in those conditions.. Trish's previous car had some very good points.. nice ride, comfy seats, plenty of room.. but they are a shocker in cross winds  :sweating:

The little Hyundai is much better than the old Falcon at aquaplaning but cops the wind a little more...Must be the higher ride in the wagon and lighter weight than the big old Falcon.
