I think most of them just plug in to ECU, they overide stock settings, they mostly with a diesel put more fuel in to gain performance. as thats how diesels work, more fuel more rev's. with petrol you give them more air.
but the one's i have seen on diesel's without the CPF ( filter in exhast pipe ) they tend to blow more smoke. what i would worry about is that it might overload the filter in the exhast and cause problems with that.
but about warranty and not voiding it, i think you just unplug them before going to dealer for work and no one knows it was ever there.

Hi echocae,

The good news is that the Manufacturer of that "Chip Box" is German. Diesel engines are now the main power plant for cars in Germany and Diesel Tuning is well established there.

To comply with the local laws the "Chip Boxes" have to carry TÜV Certification. That means they have to prove that the Chip Box do what the manufacturers claim and will not increase exhaust pollution. In fact by improving fuel efficiency a good "Chip Box" will usually reduce pollution for all but the most insane leadfoot drivers.  So there should be no worries about smoke. You can see what they have to  say about themselves here. http://www.diesel-power.com/Kategorie_Information_center_1823.html

I have seen these boxes discussed on several UK forums. A few dealers do not get upset about anyone using them but most seem to use them as an excuse for voiding warranty. As a result the standard opinion voiced in the UK forums seems to be to always remove the box before taking the car to a Dealer.

As a matter of interest I came across a UK "Chip Box" supplier (http://www.diesel-technology.co.uk/) who recommends fitting a K&N panel filter or better first

Another highly thought of supplier in the UK is a company called Tunit. You can see loads of articles about their products here. http://www.tunit.co.uk/tunit-articles.php They also have an Australian distributor http://www.tunitaustralia.com/
