However, at that speed on EU motorways, you would most likely be an embarrassment to other road users for going too slow. You need to match your speed with the local speed limits and other traffic, which may not give you the best mpg figure, unfortunately.

It is not just about the speed but also about your driving style. Drive smoothly and gently keeping your Diesel between say 1700 and 2200 rpm (opinions on the rev range will vary a bit) Anticipate traffic lights and such. Search hypermiling on here or on google for more ideas..

Must have been a different model or engine size. 

50/80 was only ever a rough guide, it's not possible to be more specific other than to to say that speeds in excess of this, use more fuel due to wind resistance and lower speeds don't operate in in the engine's best gear/ torque / power band, therefore operating less efficiently.

I can get 3.2 lphk on the stretches where I'm doing between 70 and 80 kph quite easily. The total mix of driving takes me to 4.1. Apparently some brilliant technical brain created an economy calculator and converter - for medieval units  -  for this forum, or so I'm told.

Mpg reading will go up to 99.9 downhill on trailing throttle.

I got 60.1 mpg (brim to brim fill) for a 400+ miles journey, mostly motorway, across Germany, Holland, Belgium and France.  Maximum speed was 110 mph and average speed was 58.3 mph.

What sort of dyslexia do you have? Try using a spell checker as this will highlight incorrect spellings and help you to improve your writing skills.  Have you tried a coloured  transparent overlay on your reading material?

People cruise at 50-55mph???!

We cruise open highway at  110-120 kph (105-112mph)  2/3rd highway/1/3rd city. My wife also drives great distances in 4th gear - or 5th - she often "sort of forgets" to change gear, and plants her boot away from lights, etc - she doesn't know the meaning of smooth flowing driver. The A/C is always on.

Over 70,000km we've still averaged 49.1mpg overall!
