Hello all fellow i30 diesel owners, can anyone enlighten me as to the purpose of the external cover over the engine sump on the 1.6 CRDI?
2008 FD diesel manual hatch, I have two other i30s in the family
Mine just seems to collect oil and dirt.
I am about to change a CRDI fuel pump and in getting ready I have removed the splash guard and the sump wrap item and wondering what it does??
Living and driving in the heat of Western Australia if it keeps the sump warm I will leave it off!

I don't really know, but they spend money making them, so it must be important.

I'm going to guess to create better air flow for exonomy/noise purposes, protect weaker engine parts from contact from road debris and stop long grass and hot engine parts meeting and creating fire (Though they don't protect the exaust so there you go....)

Probably rock protection. In some countries, salt s added to the roads in winter s to protect from that also IMO.

The sump cover and surrounds also contain vents which direct cool air to the exhaust manifold, I'd leave it in place.

Hello again, thanks for the comments, I am still not sure what the items achieves but as stated by a few it probably does something important so I will leave it on when I reassemble the vehicle.
