HI Everyone,

So my i30 wagon (crdi manual) is now 30 months old and has just under 44,000km on the clock.  All has been going great, but recently I'd noticed a puff of smoke on cold starting in the morning, and the puff was getting larger.

The car had done very little country driving recently, so I thought I might take my daughter for a drive out of town to see some animals (she's 3).  I drove some NSW C-grade highways for about 45 minutes, where I knew I could open the throttle up a bit and give it a run.  This included some uphill straights tackled at 120km/h+ on wide open throttle, as well as some plains where I nudged 150 a couple of times, albeit briefly, also on wide open throttle.

It's now running more smoothly than before, and the puff of smoke seems to have gone.

Presumably I was accumulating soot somewhere.  Anyone else had this issue?

I haven't accumulated points in quite a few years now.  I like to think it's because I'm good at noot getting caught, but realistically I just don't speed much any more.

The soot hasn't returned yet.  I'm thinking that in my quest for good fuel economy (every tank's a new chance, right?), I just don't drive it hard enough.

It shouldn't matter how hard you drive it. Diesel fuel is ignited by heat from compression and that doesn't vary much with high speeds as the coolant keeps engine temps relatively stable. Also with fuel injection the burn should be as clean as the design allows, across the whole range of driving styles.

In all seriousness,  I think you are right. A bit of spirited driving once your car has warmed up is good for them. I don't thrash my cars, but don't baby them either. They usually get rated well when I trade them in or sell them ( for their performance )

I passed a big semi the other day all I did was open it up streach it's legs looked down will over 145 just loved and wanted to go faster , my foot said other wise as well as the local constabulory wouldn't of approved. Just out of town where I live we have a hill that starts just out of town then goes for 5 km before the crest just gives it a good workout everyday
