Hey guys,
When I open the driver door on my Hyundai i30 2011, this happens on the dashboard:

I know that it's suppose show an image with a door open. But it doesn't do it. Sometimes when I open the door it does though. Could a fuse be going short?
Many thanks in advance

My impression is that the door plunger switch isn't making it's proper contact some of the time. If it were a fuse it would never come on. Does the dome light also fail to illuminate when the door signal is absent?

If the dome light still works all the time, you may have a dry joint in the dash.

Dry joint means a soldered joint on a circuit board, electronic component or in the wiring has failed and thus not transmitting signals or power.

The fact that it is an occasional fault suggests that Gonz's suggestion to check the door switch plunger is the first thing to look into.

You have not said whether the cabin light is also not coming on when the door is opened and there is no display in the instrument panel. If they are both similarly affected - the door switch is definitely a prime candidate.

Out of warranty?

So when the passenger or other doors open does the light come on?

If so them would go along as said that door switch is at fault.

Try pushing plunger a few times to see if that loosens.

Think looking at it it is easily removed so if at fault should be cheapish to replace.

If you can see if there are any loose connections behind it by removing and checking.

Strange how this problem has just appeared on the forum. The same panel on my 2011 auto diesel comfort has started to change from the bright one to the darker one as shown when the lights are switched on. Sometimes it is ok then will flicker and correct itself. It does not go out like the problem that naser_1998x has. Just think if the trip etc. are not displayed it might not clock up the miles. If it fails to light and remains off an mot fail as the mileage can't be shown. Luckily mine has not failed completely fingers crossed. Must be a built in fault with this model. Maybe our cars followed each other up the production line.will try it now buy opening the other doors. :crazy2:

Today after I posted this, I pushed the button near the door once and the door light came back on. And ever since the light works fine when I open and close the door...  :crazy1: :crazy1: :crazy1:
I don't know if this solved anything I guess I just have to wait and see.
Is there anything that I can use to test if there is really a dry joint?
Many thanks

A tiny squirt of silicon lubricant on the offending push switch may halp to prevent further problems  :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:

Not the first time it's been mentioned. There have been others with failing or failed units. I had to replace mine. backlight was  flickering and only had headlight level brightness.

:link: Instrument Clusters - Diesel Auto SLX

Initially it seemed it was the door switch but very intermittent.

Bad solders, maybe but I'm thinking the LEDs may be burnt  out or failing, looking at the image there's a number of blackened ones. A lot of LED backlit TVs fail simply because an LED in the backlight burns out.

Replaced the dash unit, perfect ever since. There's a number of variants depending on the model and if you swap over the eeprom your data(odometer) and settings will move with it.

Naser does not mention the other doors! Does the hatch or passenger door show as an image? Probably do and if so it backs Gonz's remedy.

ABSi30 is on different tangent. Thanks for the link back to your work Gerard.  :goodjob2:

On the available info, the problem is resolved until the door switch plays up again. Being such an electromechanical device, it's easy for a bit of dirt, dust or fluff to degrade its function. As mentioned, if it becomes troublesome again, a cheap clean, repair or replacement. :victory:

OMG, Here come the one liners. Generally I find two hands is enough.
