What other I30 rims fit my i30cw?
« May 14, 2019, 00:04:18 »
Had my 2012 FD i30cw since new. Its currently up to 167,000km.
Im planning to keep it for a very long time.
Thinking about updating the look with some rims off a newer i30.

Will wheels from any i30 fit on it?
The stock steel wheels are 15 steel.

If I upgrade to 16 or 17 wheels will there be any negative side effects?
I assume it will be fine since other fds came with those bigger wheels.

I believe pretty much any other 16" or 17" i30 or for that matter other model Hyundai sedan/hatch wheels will work ok with your CW.

Obviously just be prepared particularly with 17" for a firmer ride and more road noise as the tyres will most likely be wider.

As your CW is 7 years old with over 100,000 miles equivalent on it I would be budgeting on new struts or springs or both as the originals would be past their prime by now.

I think newer generation rims would still be fine as long as the rolling circumference is kept the same, bigger rim = smaller profile tyre.

Always best to fit one first if possible on the front an check the guard and turning clearance.

Offsets will be different  between the series , they are between FD and GD. I'd have to do some research for PD if I can find any.

The GD alloys would fit on the FD.

before you dive in and grab the rims , research the price differences for tyres between 16 and 17 inch.

The 16s are a good upgrade alone, and new shocks like KYB excel will firm it up.

Grabbed the data from here. :link: Hyundai i30 - Specs of wheel sizes, tires, PCD, Offset and Rims - Wheel-Size.com

Likely UK market so not all rim sizes may be applicable here . Should give a good idea though . GD and PD offsets appear the same so that would lead me to belive that any i30 rim would fit ok.

I'm not an expert on offsets, what those limits may be or how it may affect insurance.  @Surferdude @cruiserfied

At the maximum offset shown there as 10mm difference you'll find that they'll probably all fit, always wise to fit a front wheel to test anyway.

Even the PD SR rims would likely suit

On the 16s it appears the rim will be slightly inboard more between the FD and latter models

My Hankook's were $140 each, Michelins Pilot 4 depending on dealer are $180 to $210.

Thanks for the replies. What a response!

I'd love to get some 17's from a GD but I think instead it would be wise to get some 16's considering how many km's I do, including driving interstate a couple of times a year.

I'm eying off some nice 16's off GD i30's. There are a few different types to choose from.

Would the 16's be firmer and offer more grip than the stock 15's?

I bought two of those from Kmart for a friends car to get him over the pits, I wouldnt use em on mine though after driving with them on the other car, they have no balanced control whatsoever with them tyres :crazy1:

looking at that diagram on that website the rim is slightly away from the guard and in towards the struts.

I'm repeating myself but Diamonds are forever, how are they wearing? I just replaced my Phillipino Achilles and Chinese WINRUN. almost grabbed some more Winrun being so cheap.

Went OEM Hankooks for the i40, huge difference in sidewall strength and the way it steers. had no issues with grip but noticably more control. The  WINRUNs were 50% of the Hankook.

I'd get the Winrun over the JAX Achilles specials

My rears are still the Diamondbacks and they still roll perfectly, not like the OEMs which had passengers asking when I'd be replacing the axles! :crazy1:

My 2 cents worth.  I'd think they'd be tired. When you have a car over a long period unless they completely fail it's a gradual degradation which you may not notice.

With my cars I've had the rear shocks go soft and start to chop the inner edges of the tyres up. Eventually squared off edges and lots of noise that sounds like bad bearings.

I have 2 hatches, both CRDi, both have KYBs all round, both have had new sway bar bushes and new control arm bushes. 1 has 240 000k, I estimate 60k on the new KYBs. Quite firm and very settled on bumps.

The other around 390000k, unknown distance on the KYBs but safe to say 200 000k as a guessand going on appearance. Still work ok, no where near as firm as the other.

The CW, also have one of them, KYB on rear due to the OEM retiring with rear tyre issues, original fronts. which I estimate at 90000K. Wagon rides a lot better than the Hatch in the rear, longer springs, longer wheel base.

All have FD SLX / Trophy 16"

What Gerard said ... If you intend keep it a while and spending money on better bigger wheels and can afford to get the struts and or springs replaced it should make a big difference to ride and handling. Going from 15" to 16" alone won't make a huge difference ride and handling wise. Although it depends on what tyres you've got now and what the new wheels come with. Hopefully better tyres than what you are running now.
