Hello fellow i30 Hyundai owners, we have recently purchased a i30cw auto petrol model with 34k on the clock, its been a great little car so far but we have noticed a few little problems/issues related to its gear changes, firstly when doing braking for traffic lights, junctions etc.. it shudders when downchanging, like it doesnt know which gear to be in, it also appears to not know what gear it needs to be in when doing some rapid acceleration when overtaking, it will change down then up then backdown again, i guess both these problems are related somehow but its a problem you would expect with about 100k+ on the clock, plus it has got a buzz on the dash at certain speeds, are these just teething problems or are they a sign of things to come?.............I used to know a lot about cars, having owned Hillman's, Morrise's, Torana's, Cortina's, Corolla's etc.. but when you lift the bonnet these days its a bit of WTF!
thanks for any potential replies.. Arthur

Welcome Arthur .. Nice to see another Tassie Member on the books (we might have as many as 20 but only about 4 of us are what you would call active members)

Sorry to hear about your transmission issues, unfortunately there have been some issues with the auto box (but mainly with the diesel due to the extra torque it generates) I will modify this to add some links. Do you get any lag when you select reverse (that is one of the first symptoms) Obviously is is covered under the extensive Warranty .. so you need to go to Motors and get it sorted.  :undecided:

As far as the Dash rattle or buzz is concerned there are threads on here about that too. Hopefully it is only the Glovebox lid which is easier to fix that the other possibility which involves packing some foam or something between the top of the stereo unit and the cubby on the top of the dash. (again I will modify this reply with some thread links if I can find them)

Welcome kongar,

It looks like Dazz has pretty much covered your issues, but if you need any further help, just yell.

Hyundai has to be aware of some issues on a particular batch of automatics, so have a read through the links that Dazz posted and take it from there.
It's what the warranty is for.  :)

Update to gear problem, took to service agent, they replaced worn out valves in the Auto transmission and they also replaced ignition lock (intermittently unable to turn key) those problems now fixed (parts cost was about $2,000 thank goodness covered under warranty).... well the car is back in to fix engine/drive train shudder at low speed with a fully loaded vehicle ( while they were testing it they busted a cv joint!) and they are also  trying to figure out why it "Jumped " out of gear while down shifting up a bumpy gravel road (had to turn the engine off to start it working properly) and the thing has less than 40Ks on it, it is starting to look like a yellow colored citrus fruit, if it has to go back one more time this year I am afraid its a case of three strikes and your gone, I wonder if any of these will be on the road in 10 years time?  :( :( :( :(

Ex Federal Gov fleet car, warning bells b4 we purchased perhaps? they tested for engine shudder by putting on hard lock and applying full trhrottle therfore busting it, apparently faulty cv joints are not a rare occurence.

dealer trying to talk their way out of being caught out having a bit of fun at your cars expense?

to break a cv joint in a naturally aspirated 2.0 litre AUTO in a small car you'd have to be giving it a bloody hard time. a few revs in neutral and then drop it back into drive springs to mind.

15% of all traffic crashes are caused by people who drink alcohol.
That means that 85% are caused by people who don't.
A very sobering statistic.
